Market regime, November 1

Top five drivers, the risk matrix and the book for Sunday, November 01, 2026.

Not a flip. Score 43 of 100. The label is NEUTRAL. Yesterday the score was 44. The label was already NEUTRAL. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. The score fell 1 point. It did not cross 45. It did not cross 30. It is 2 points under the CAUTION line. Yesterday it was 1 point under that line.

Sunday is not a new close. Friday is the last completed US session. Cash markets are closed. Asia cash is closed. There is no Sunday settlement in this note. A screen this note does not have is not a close.

What changed is the weekend wire, not the settlement. Talks continued. They are not a deal. There is no strike decision. A readiness order is not a strike. Sources said December oil targets stay steady, in principle. That is not a published communique, and it is not new barrels. China's official factory gauge fell back into contraction. Korea's October exports were very strong, and that print is a month, not a US session. None of those wires rewrites Friday's cash close.

The book versus yesterday is the same book. Hold the crude sleeve. Do not add it because a leader ordered readiness. Do not sell it because mediators met. Do not cover the bond. Do not buy chips because Korea's chip exports rose. Do not buy Friday's dip into a market that is closed.

In short

  3. United States Yields fell Friday. Do not cover.
  4. China China factories shrank in October.
  5. United States Tuesday is the vote. Friday is jobs.

Markets bar

Friday is the last completed US session. Equity rows are that close. The close story and this feed agree on the three main indexes. Do not print a second close. Yield rows are the index in the score. They are not a cash yield. Oil rows name the settlement first. This feed's Friday Brent bar matches the expired December settlement. It is not the active January contract. A last trade is not a settlement. This note does not cite a Sunday screen.

This note does not cite oil or gold volume as a settlement volume.

For October, the settlement story has Brent up 13.6 percent and US crude up 15.2 percent. That is the month. It is not Friday. Do not trade the month as the day.

Top five drivers

Iran No Strike Decision

Talks Are Not a Deal. Hold the Sleeve.

SignalThe weekend did not open the strait, and it did not close it. Do not trade a meeting as a settlement. Do not trade a readiness order as a strike.

On Saturday, Iranian negotiators met Qatari mediators in Doha. That followed more than 12 hours of talks in Tehran on Friday. A source briefed on the talks said they were coordinated with Washington. Qatar had brought a seven day trust plan. An Iranian official said on Friday that plan was not satisfactory. Iran's own seven day plan, which asks Washington to lift a port blockade, unfreeze assets, and accept an Iranian backed route through the strait, has so far been rejected. The foreign minister said Iran was studying the vice president's letter, and that the Iranian plan was the only proposal on the table to reopen the strait. A letter under study is not an answer. A rejected plan is not an opening.

The secretary of state said on Saturday that the president has not decided whether to launch new strikes. He said the president would prefer a diplomatic end, and he set no timeframe. He said talks have not stopped. A preference is not a ceasefire. Countries in the region still expect that strikes could restart after Tuesday's vote. An expectation is not an order.

Iran's supreme leader ordered the armed forces on Saturday to be ready to answer any attack at once, with a response he said would not be limited by geography. The military said it was taking steps to improve readiness. A readiness order is not a lost cargo. The security chief said Tehran was debating whether to lift its ban on nuclear weapons if fighting resumes. He said no such decision had been taken. A debate is not a decision. Do not trade the debate as a new weapon, and do not trade it as a reason to sell the sleeve.

The confirmed strike from Friday is still one ship. A small boat attached two limpet mines. The engine room caught fire. The ship was temporarily disabled. The crew was safe. There was no environmental impact. The ship continued. That was the first known successful limpet strike in the waterway since the war began in February. Iran has also said four tankers hit mines. That claim is not the confirmed ship. Do not merge the counts. A ship that kept sailing is not an outage.

The settlement did not change over the weekend, because there was no weekend settlement. December Brent expired Friday, up 2.76 dollars, or 2.4 percent, at 117.64 dollars. January, the active contract, settled at 113.43 dollars, up 2.63 dollars. US crude settled at 104.12 dollars, up 2.12 dollars, or 2.08 percent. This feed's Friday Brent bar is 117.64 dollars. That is the expired December contract. It is not January. Do not trade 117.64 as the active contract. This feed's Friday US crude bar is 104.12 dollars. That matches the settlement. One number.

Sources told Reuters the core group has agreed in principle to keep December output targets steady. The online meeting is Sunday. This note does not have a published communique. A hold in principle is not a new cut, and it is not new barrels. Gulf members are still pumping below their targets because of the war. A layer of cuts of about 2 million barrels a day is still in place through the end of 2026. The earlier rollback, of 1.65 million barrels a day, was already completed in September. Do not read Sunday's meeting as a supply flood.

Macro ImpactYesterday the trap was selling the sleeve because a rolled bar looked cheap, or adding it because the settlement jumped. Today the trap is selling it because mediators met, or adding it because a leader ordered readiness. Neither wire is a close. The settlement is the same settlement. The strait is the same strait.

PositioningHold the crude sleeve. Do not add it. Do not sell it. Do not trade the expired December bar as January. No airlines and no transports. The energy fund rose 1.91 percent on Friday while the settlement rose 2.08 percent. That close is not a reason to add the fund into the vote.

United States Friday Sold the Spend

Korea's Month Does Not Rewrite It.

SignalThe cash close already happened. A strong Korean export month is not a new US session. Do not buy a closed market because chips left Korea.

The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.82 percent, to 7,580.07. The Nasdaq Composite fell 747.73 points, or 2.86 percent, to 25,437.00. That is the largest one day drop since 5 June. The Nasdaq is down 7.8 percent from its closing high on 6 Oct. That 7.8 percent is from the high, not from Thursday. The Dow fell 572.25 points, or 1.09 percent, to 51,770.31. All three indexes finished the week lower. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq logged monthly losses. The Dow logged a monthly gain. This note has no exact monthly percent for those three indexes. Do not invent one.

Breadth flipped on Friday. Decliners led advancers by 1.8 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, and by 3.03 to 1 on the Nasdaq. The Nasdaq had 70 new highs and 355 new lows. The S&P 500 had 43 new highs and 5 new lows. Volume was 19.87 billion shares, against a 17.26 billion average for the last 20 full sessions. A down index, with more stocks down than up, is not a crash. The damage sat in chips.

Intel fell 28.6 percent. This feed closed at 65.76, from Thursday's 92.07. That is the same 28.6 percent. Nvidia fell 4.2 percent. This feed closed at 204.64, from Thursday's 213.66. AMD fell 10.9 percent. This feed closed at 504.80, from Thursday's 566.42. That is the same 10.9 percent. The chip index fell 7.2 percent, and more than 15 percent on the month. The semiconductor fund on this feed fell 7.0 percent, to 522.49. Those are two indexes. Do not average 7.0 with 7.2.

Amazon's cash close on this feed was 240.35, down 1.4 percent from Thursday's 243.79. The close story said the shares pared losses. It did not print a cash percent in the lines this note used. Do not go back to Thursday's extended prints. Alphabet on this feed closed at 279.84, down 1.4 percent from Thursday's 283.82. Exxon rose 2.2 percent. Chevron rose 2.8 percent. That is the energy sleeve inside a down tape. It is not a reason to add it.

Of 299 S&P 500 companies that have reported, 82 percent have beaten. Expected growth is 31.6 percent, year on year. A higher beat rate, and a lower close, is the point. The bar is the cash, not the beat.

Korea is the weekend print that will tempt a Monday chase. Exports rose 93.7 percent in October from a year earlier, to 115.28 billion dollars. That beat a 93.2 percent forecast. It was the strongest jump since January 1974. The ministry said the surge was boosted by more working days than a year earlier, because of the holiday calendar. Semiconductor exports rose 259.4 percent on the year, to 56.44 billion dollars. Computer sales rose 496.6 percent. Those percents are October versus a year earlier. They are not Friday. They are not a US cash close. Demand for the chips can be strong, and the US cash close can still have sold the spend. Both are in this note. Do not trade the month as the day.

Apple reports on Monday. That report is not in. AMD and several other large reports sit in the same week. This note does not assign those other days. A report that has not printed is not a reason to buy Friday's dip.

Macro ImpactThe question is still whether the spending turns into cash. Friday answered it for that session. Korea answered a different question, for a different month, with a holiday in the base. Buying the chip fund because Korea's chip exports rose 259.4 percent on the year is how a sold tape becomes the position you have to defend on Monday.

PositioningDo not buy the semiconductor fund. Do not short it either. The close already happened. The next large report has not. Cash still beats a chase into a market that is closed.

United States Yields Fell on Friday

The Hike Case Did Not. Do Not Cover.

SignalThere is no new rate print this weekend. Friday's rally in the long end is still Friday's rally. The officials who spoke on Friday asked for more hikes, not fewer.

The yield index in the score closed at 4.929 percent, down 6.0 basis points from 4.989. The 5 year index closed at 4.721 percent, down 8.0 basis points from 4.801. The 30 year index closed at 5.309 percent, down 2.0 basis points from 5.329. These are indexes. This note has no fresh cash yield wrap. Do not invent a benchmark yield, and do not reuse a wrap this note did not re-read.

The hold is already in. The target range is 3.75 percent to 4 percent. On Friday a voter said the committee needs at least two more quarter point increases, then a pause. A non voter said more firming is necessary, and soon, and that policy is still accommodative. A third said the direction is straightforward and the question is pace. Two officials had dissented for a hike on Wednesday. Neither filed a written reason on Friday. The chair did not say what the December meeting will do. That meeting is 8 Dec (Tue) and 9 Dec (Wed). Futures odds of a December hike eased. The wrap gave no new percent. An increase is still more likely than a hold, on that wrap. Do not invent a percent.

The last employment situation is September, not October. Unemployment was 4.2 percent. Payrolls rose 29,000. Compensation costs rose 0.8 percent in the third quarter and 3.4 percent on the year. Wages rose 3.1 percent on the year. Benefits rose 3.9 percent on the year. October's labor print is Friday. Do not trade September as October. Do not cover before the print, and do not fade it from a forecast.

This feed's Friday gold close was 3,898.90 dollars, down 3.3 percent from Thursday's 4,031.40. The gold fund fell 3.47 percent, to 355.78. This note has no fresh spot print. Do not invent one. Gold's fall on Friday was the rate story, not a war bid. The war hedge is still crude.

The dollar is not a signal. This feed closed at 101.88, down 0.16 percent from Thursday's 102.04. This note has no fresh wire print. Do not invent a second dollar. Do not trade the sign.

Macro ImpactA flight from the spend pulled yields down on Friday. It did not pull the hike case down. Covering the short because the yield index fell 6.0 basis points is how you buy a bond into a December meeting that is still a hike meeting, and into officials who asked for more. Adding to the short into a closed weekend is a chase. The long bond fund rose 0.43 percent on Friday. That is the close. It is not a new entry.

PositioningStay underweight long duration. Do not cover. Do not add to the short into a closed weekend. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. Do not buy the gold dip. A zero weight in gold is fine. If you want the war hedge, it is the crude sleeve, and that sleeve is not a new trade today.

Key SourcesReuters, 30 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/business/feds-musalem-says-rate-hike-is-needed-soon-2026-10-30/ ; Federal Reserve calendar, December 8 to 9, 2026 ; Bureau of Labor Statistics, September employment situation and third quarter compensation costs

China Factories Contracted

That Is Not a Stimulus Bid.

SignalChina printed a real number on Saturday. It was not a new policy figure. Do not trade a contraction as a coming package.

The official manufacturing gauge fell to 49.3 in October, from 50.1 in September. A Reuters poll had looked for 50.0. It is the third contraction in four months. The non manufacturing gauge, which covers services and construction, fell to 49.7 from 50.2. New orders and new export orders stayed in contraction. Production slipped into contraction from expansion. A reading below 50 is contraction. This one missed the line, and it missed the forecast.

Economists in the story asked for more support. The story did not contain a new stimulus figure. The economy is expected to meet a 4.5 to 5.0 percent growth target without extra measures, after third quarter growth of 4.5 percent, up from 4.3 percent in the prior quarter. An expectation of no extra package is not a package. Some high tech manufacturing gauges were at or above 53.0. That is not the headline. The headline is 49.3.

Korea's export boom is the other side of the region, and it is chips, not a China bid. Do not use a Korean month to buy Chinese cyclicals. Do not use a closed Asia session as a proxy for a US open.

Macro ImpactA factory gauge back under 50, with no new policy figure, is a reason to keep the underweight. It is not a reason to add risk because "they will have to stimulate." They have not, in this note. Treating 49.3 as a buy is how a growth miss becomes the position you have to defend when the package does not arrive.

PositioningStay underweight China cyclicals. No new policy figure. Do not add because the gauge missed. Do not cover the underweight because Korea's chips were strong.

The Score Fell to 43

The Label Did Not Flip. Tuesday Is the Vote.

SignalA 1 point dip on a closed weekend is not a buy signal. A volatility index at 19.42 is not a crash, and it is not an all clear.

The score is 43. Yesterday's score was 44. Fiscal pressure is 56, unchanged. Central bank pressure is 45, unchanged. Flow pressure is 48, unchanged. Narrative stress is 13, down 7 points from 20. The volatility index in the score is Friday's 19.42. The yield index in the score is Friday's 4.929 percent. Prices did not print a Sunday close. This note does not have a new price that explains the 7 point narrative dip. Do not trade it.

The high yield fund fell 0.19 percent on Friday. The investment grade fund rose 0.05 percent. Credit did not crack. That is not a reason to add risk 2 points under the CAUTION line, with a strait that is not open and a vote that has not been held.

Tuesday 3 Nov (Tue) is the US midterm election. The oil story says traders are braced for an escalation after that vote. A brace is not an order. A poll is not a settlement. Friday 6 Nov (Fri) is the October employment situation. The labor print is not in. Apple reports on Monday 2 Nov (Mon). That report is not in.

The December policy meeting sits beyond this two week list. It is 8 Dec (Tue) and 9 Dec (Wed). It is still the hike meeting. Friday's wrap said the odds eased, and that an increase is still more likely than a hold. It gave no new percent. Do not invent one.

Macro ImpactA score that falls 1 point and stays 2 points under CAUTION is a hold, not a signal. The drop is the narrative line in the score, not a new close. Treating 43 as a buy because it moved away from 45 is how you add risk into a vote that has not been held. Treating 43 as a flip is how you sell a book that has not changed its label.

PositioningDo not add risk because the label is still NEUTRAL. Do not cut risk because the score fell 1 point. The sleeve you had yesterday is the sleeve you should still have. The reason to keep it did not loosen.

Portfolio

Sleeve Stance Rationale
CrudeHold. Do not add. Do not sellNo strike decision. Talks are not a deal. December targets steady in principle. Settlement unchanged. The sleeve is the hedge. It is not a new trade
Energy equities (XLE)Hold with the sleeve. Do not addThe fund rose 1.91 percent on Friday with the settlement. That close is not a reason to add into the vote
Long duration (TLT)Underweight. Do not coverYield index at 4.929 percent. Officials asked for more hikes. December is still the hike meeting. Do not add to the short into a closed weekend

Date Event Why it matters
1 Nov (Sun)OPEC+ online meeting, core groupSources said December targets stay steady, in principle. This note has no communique. Do not trade it as a cut, and do not trade it as new barrels
2 Nov (Mon)Apple reportsThe close already sold the spend. This report is not in. Do not buy Friday's dip into it, and do not short a closed market for it
3 Nov (Tue)US midterm electionsThe strike brace is tied to after this vote. A brace is not an order. Do not trade the polls as a settlement
6 Nov (Fri)October employment situationThe labor print is not in. September was 4.2 percent unemployment and payrolls up 29,000. Do not trade September as October. Do not cover before the print

This note does not assign job openings, consumer prices, or producer prices. Those days were not in the sources this note used. Do not trade a date this note does not have. Several other large reports sit in the same week as Apple. This note does not assign those days either.

The December policy meeting sits beyond this two week list. It is 8 Dec (Tue) and 9 Dec (Wed). It is still the hike meeting. Friday's wrap said hike odds eased, and that an increase is still more likely than a hold. It gave no new percent. Do not invent one. Do not cover before the labor print that sits in front of it.

Scorecard

43 of 100 sits in NEUTRAL. Caution starts at 45, risk-off at 61, risk-on below 30.

Variable Score Interpretation
Fiscal Impulse56Unchanged from yesterday. The yield index closed Friday at 4.929 percent. The level is still not easy. A closed weekend did not make it a bond bid
CB Elasticity45Unchanged from yesterday. The 5 year index closed Friday at 4.721 percent. December is still a hike meeting. Do not read 45 as a cut
Flow Pressure48Unchanged from yesterday. The volatility index closed Friday at 19.42. The close is under 20. The high yield fund fell 0.19 percent on Friday. More stress than the prior session. Not a crack
Narrative Coherence13Down 7 points from 20. The score took the dip. This note has no new price that explains it. Do not trade a 7 point line on a closed weekend
Composite43NEUTRAL

The label did not flip. The score is 43. Yesterday it was 44. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. A higher score means more stress. This score fell 1 point. It did not cross 45. It did not cross 30. It is 2 points from CAUTION and 13 points from RISK-ON. There is no strike decision, the settlement did not change, and the vote has not been held. A 43 going into that calendar is a hold, not a signal.
