🌍 Market Regime — October 24, 2026

October 24, 2026 · Top 5 regime drivers, risk matrix, positioning

In short
🌍 MARKET REGIME, Oct 24 (Sat)
Friday's close is the book. Markets are shut.
1. Iran Brent settled higher. Do not chase oil.
2. United States The Dow fell. Do not sell the book.
3. United States Yields bounced. Do not cover bonds.
4. United States Score is 43. Still neutral. Not a flip.
5. United States A hold next week is still the base.
Signal. Neutral. Hold energy. Do not buy the dip. Score 43 of 100.

Not a flip. Score 43 of 100. The label is NEUTRAL. Yesterday the score was 39. The label was already NEUTRAL. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. The score rose 4 points. It did not cross 45. It is 2 points under the CAUTION line.

This is a weekend edition. Friday is the last completed US session. Cash markets are shut. A weekend screen is not a new close.

The oil settlement is a new book versus yesterday's screen warning. The label is not a new book. Do not add the crude sleeve because the settlement rose. Do not sell it because this feed printed a lower later contract. Do not buy the Dow dip. Do not sell the book because the Dow fell. Do not buy chips because Friday steadied. Do not cover the long bond. Do not add to the duration short.

📊 Markets Bar

Friday is the last completed US session. Oil rows name the source. This feed's continuous Brent bar is not the settlement. Do not average them. Cash markets are shut.

30-year yield index (Fri close)5.315%Up 2.8 basis points vs Thursday's 5.287. Not the cash yield
Cash 10-year (Fri close story)4.99%The close story said the yield was up 3.7 basis points, at 4.99 percent. A second close story said it edged up to 4.99 percent from 4.96 percent late Thursday. Not this index. Do not average 4.99 and 4.988
Brent (Fri settlement)116.72 dollarsUp 3.55 dollars, or 3.14 percent, from Thursday's 113.17. Highest since 29 Apr in the settlement story. The week in that story was up 6 percent
WTI (Fri settlement)103.27 dollarsUp 3.80 dollars, or 3.8 percent, from Thursday's 99.47. The story did not name the month. The week in that story was up 2.3 percent
December crude (this feed, Fri last)103.44 dollarsNot the settlement of 103.27. Thursday's bar on this feed was 99.47. A 17 cent gap is not a new contract. Do not average 103.44 and 103.27
January 2027 Brent (this feed, Fri bar)111.66 dollarsNot the settlement of 116.72. A different contract. The gap is 5.06 dollars. Do not sell the sleeve because this bar is lower. Do not average them
Brent history labelDo not blendThe settlement story said highest since 29 Apr. A second close story agreed on 116.72 dollars and said highest since June 2022. The price agrees. The history label does not. Use 29 Apr
Energy sector (Fri close story)Record highUp 2.5 percent in the close story. This feed's energy fund rose 2.6 percent, to 69.33. Do not average 2.5 and 2.6
Semiconductor index (Fri close story)SteadiedUp 0.4 percent in the close story. This feed's semiconductor fund rose 0.7 percent, to 527.20. Do not average 0.4 and 0.7. Not a repair of Thursday
Gold fund (Fri close)366.61Down 0.6 percent vs Thursday's 369.00. Not a futures settlement. Down 4.0 percent from the 16 Oct close on this feed
December gold (Fri settlement)4,007.90 dollarsDown 1.3 percent in a Friday afternoon note. This feed's December last print was 4,010.00. A 2.10 dollar gap. Do not average them
Spot gold (Fri 14:27 ET)3,998.49 dollarsA screen in that same note, down 0.6 percent at that clock. Not a settlement. First print under 4,000 in that note since mid July. Do not trade it
Dollar index (Fri close, this feed)101.752Up 0.14 percent vs Thursday's 101.610 on this pull. The close story did not print this index
Oil fund (Fri close, this feed)169.53Up 4.3 percent vs Thursday's 162.51. Not the settlement

This note does not cite oil volume. Friday's December crude volume on this feed was not a copy of Thursday's. That is not a thin print claim, and it is not a settlement volume.

Top 5 Regime Drivers

1. Iran Brent Settled at 116.72 Dollars. Do Not Chase It. Do Not Sell the Lower Print.

Signal. Yesterday's screen is now a settlement. This feed's Friday Brent bar is a different contract. The strait is not open.

The settlement story said Brent settled at 116.72 dollars, up 3.55 dollars, or 3.14 percent, the highest since 29 Apr. Adding 3.55 dollars to Thursday's 113.17 lands on 116.72. That lines up. The same story said US crude closed at 103.27 dollars, up 3.80 dollars, or 3.8 percent. Adding 3.80 dollars to Thursday's 99.47 lands on 103.27. That lines up. The story did not name the month. The same story said Brent finished the week up 6 percent and US crude ended the week 2.3 percent higher. Those are the settlement story's week figures. I am not recomputing them from this feed.

A second close story agreed on a Brent settlement of 116.72 dollars, up 3.1 percent, and said that was the highest since June 2022. The price agrees. The history label does not. Do not average 29 Apr and June 2022. Use the settlement story for the history label.

This feed's Friday Brent bar printed 111.66 dollars. The contract name on this feed is January 2027. That is not the settlement of 116.72. The gap is 5.06 dollars. Thursday's bar on this same ticker printed 113.17, which matched Thursday's settlement. Friday it does not. A roll is a different contract. Do not sell the sleeve because 111.66 is lower. Do not average 111.66 and 116.72.

This feed's December crude last print was 103.44 dollars. Thursday's bar was 99.47. The settlement is 103.27. The gap is 17 cents. That is a last print, not a second settlement, and not a new month. Do not average 103.44 and 103.27. Do not trade 103.44 as the close.

The settlement story said Iranian backed Houthi forces carried out a series of attacks across Saudi Arabia, including on energy infrastructure. An oil spill was detected off the UAE coast of Umm Al Quwain. The ministry did not say what caused it. Authorities have not identified the tanker. An unidentified spill is not a flow I measured. It is not a reason to add, and it is not a reason to sell.

The same story said October has been the worst month for attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waterways, citing a Washington think tank. The story did not print a ship count. I am not inventing one. A worst month is not an opening of the strait.

The president said on Friday the US could end the war with Iran quickly, and also said perhaps Washington should let the conflict wind down. A comment about two paths is not an order. It is not a ceasefire. It is not a settlement.

The Energy Department authorized an emergency exchange of up to 400,000 barrels from the strategic reserve for a Phillips 66 refinery in Lake Charles. That is a refinery barrel count. It is not a market clearing release. Germany circulated a tender to sell diesel, heating oil, and crude from strategic reserves. A tender is not a US close. A tanker of Russian diesel heading for New York is a cargo in transit. It is not a settlement. The rig count held at 603. That is not a supply response.

Macro Impact. A settlement of 116.72 dollars, up 3.14 percent on Friday, does not open the strait and does not clear it. A settlement of 103.27 dollars does not either. Selling the sleeve because this feed printed 111.66 dollars is the trap. Adding the sleeve because 116.72 is above Thursday's 113.17 is the other trap. A 400,000 barrel exchange does not change that.

The energy sector rose 2.5 percent in the close story, to a record. This feed's energy fund rose 2.6 percent, to 69.33. The oil fund rose 4.3 percent, to 169.53. Those are not the settlement. A record in the equity sleeve is not a new crude entry. A higher oil fund is not a reason to add.

Positioning. Hold the core crude sleeve. Do not add it. Do not sell it. Do not trade 111.66 as the settlement. Do not trade 103.44 as the settlement. Do not trade a weekend screen as Friday's book.

2. United States The Dow Fell 1.23 Percent. Do Not Sell the Book. Do Not Buy the Dip.

Signal. Friday's cash close is a Dow drop on higher oil. It is not a second technology break, and it is not an entry.

The close story said the Dow fell 652.82 points, or 1.23 percent, to 52,215.16. The S&P 500 fell 39.75 points, or 0.52 percent, to 7,623.68. The Nasdaq fell 53.52 points, or 0.21 percent, to 25,955.34. This feed matches those three closes. Do not round them into a different tape.

The same story said the S&P 500 fell 0.5 percent this week and the Nasdaq dropped 0.7 percent this week. The Dow rose 0.4 percent this week, a third straight weekly gain. This feed, from the 16 Oct close to the 23 Oct close, agrees at one decimal. I am not printing a second week.

Thursday was the technology break. Friday was not a repair, and it was not a second break. The semiconductor index rose 0.4 percent in the close story. The technology index rose 0.4 percent in that story. This feed's semiconductor fund rose 0.7 percent, to 527.20. Do not average 0.4 and 0.7. A one day steadying is not a repair of Thursday's drop, and it is not a new entry.

The drop was broad inside the S&P 500. A close story said nearly three of every four stocks in that index fell. I am not reprinting a New York exchange breadth count. The close story I am using for the index levels did not print one. Do not invent it. Do not sell the whole book because the Dow fell 1.23 percent. Do not buy the book because the Nasdaq fell only 0.21 percent.

American Express fell 3.7 percent in the close story, after results and after it said it needed to become a more agile organization. A second close story said the same 3.7 percent, and said the firm announced its first major job cuts in roughly a decade. Caterpillar fell 2.4 percent in that second story. JPMorgan and Citigroup each fell 1.5 percent in that story. Those are cash closes. They are not a reason to buy the open.

The close story said Meta ended down 1 percent. Microsoft was up 0.7 percent in that story. Alphabet and Amazon eased. This feed had Meta down 1.0 percent, to 642.62, and Microsoft up 0.7 percent, to 524.51. Do not average a story percent and a feed percent when they already agree at one decimal. This feed had Alphabet down 1.2 percent, to 320.21, and Amazon down 1.0 percent, to 248.00. Those stamps are still ahead. A one day ease is not a new entry, and it is not a reason to skip the reports.

The energy sector rose 2.5 percent in the close story, to a record. Chevron rose 2.9 percent in the second close story. This feed had Chevron up 2.9 percent, to 233.21, and Exxon up 2.8 percent, to 183.21. A record in the equity energy sleeve is not a reason to add the crude sleeve, and it is not a reason to add the equity sleeve on top of it.

Korea ended its Friday session higher after being down as much as 4 percent earlier, in the close story. That session is closed. It is not a US repair, and it is not a US break.

Macro Impact. A 1.23 percent drop in the Dow, with nearly three of four S&P 500 stocks lower, is why you do not buy the dip. A 0.21 percent drop in the Nasdaq, with the semiconductor index up 0.4 percent in the close story, is why you do not treat Friday as a second technology crash. The error is to buy the Dow because oil is the stated cause. The other error is to buy the semiconductor fund because it rose 0.7 percent on this feed.

Positioning. Do not buy the Dow dip. Do not sell the book. Do not buy the semiconductor fund. Do not add high beta tech into next week's reports. Do not add the energy equity sleeve because it hit a record. A starter in utilities is still cleaner than a chip chase. The utilities fund fell 0.7 percent, to 42.56. That is not a reason to add. Keep financials small. The fund fell 1.3 percent, to 55.90. That is not a new entry.

3. United States The Yield Index Bounced. Do Not Cover Bonds.

Signal. No new US inflation print arrived. The yield index rose. A cash yield story rose by a different amount. Those are two clocks. A hold next week is still the base. A cut is not.

The 10 year yield index closed at 4.988 percent, up 3.5 basis points from Thursday's 4.953. The 5 year yield index closed at 4.805 percent, up 3.7 basis points from Thursday's 4.768. The 30 year yield index closed at 5.315 percent, up 2.8 basis points from Thursday's 5.287. The bill index closed at 4.032 percent, up 1.0 basis point from Thursday's 4.022. The long bond fund fell 0.5 percent, to 81.34. That lines up with a higher yield index. It is not the cash story. Do not force them into one number.

The close story said the 10 year yield was up 3.7 basis points, at 4.99 percent, and remained under 5 percent. A second close story said it edged up to 4.99 percent from 4.96 percent late Thursday. That is not this index. Do not average 4.99 and 4.988. Do not average 3.7 and 3.5. Do not average a 4.96 starting point with Thursday's index close of 4.953.

Thursday's drop was the large move. Friday gave a part of it back. A partial bounce is why you do not add to the duration short. It is not why you cover. The close story tied the bounce to sticky inflation, after Thursday's large drop. A haven day that reverses is not an easing cycle. A higher oil settlement is why you do not cover.

The investment grade credit fund fell 0.4 percent, to 103.85. The high yield fund was little changed, at 77.05. Credit did not break. That is not a reason to buy the long bond, and it is not a reason to add to the short.

Macro Impact. A 3.5 basis point rise in the yield index, to 4.988 percent, is why you do not cover the duration short. It is not why you add to it. The error is to buy the long bond because the cash yield is still under 5 percent. The other error is to add to the short because a December hike is still the larger bet. The clocks do not agree on the size of the bounce. That is why you do neither.

Positioning. Stay underweight long duration. Do not cover it. Do not add to the short. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. The long bond fund fell 0.5 percent on Friday. That is not a buy, and it is not a reason to add to the short.

Key Sources. Reuters, 23 Oct, https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/articles/tech-selloff-relents-oil-five-103308077.html ; AP, 23 Oct, https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-ai-oil-inflation-7b47ef3b037bfba4e34f685329b9b963

4. United States The Score Rose to 43. That Is Not a Buy.

Signal. The label did not move. The book should not.

The score is 43. Yesterday it was 39. Fiscal pressure is 57, up from 55. Central bank pressure is 54, up from 45. Flow pressure is 43, down from 46. Narrative stress is 9, up from 0. VIX closed at 19.45, up 0.42 points from Thursday's 19.03. The yield index closed at 4.988 percent, up 3.5 basis points from Thursday's 4.953. The 5 year yield index closed at 4.805 percent, up 3.7 basis points from Thursday's 4.768.

The central bank leg rose 9 points. The yield index rose 3.5 basis points. I am not going to invent a second reason for a 9 point jump. The fiscal leg rose only 2 points on the same yield bounce. The fear gauge rose, and the flow leg still eased. That is already in the score. A Dow drop and a lower gold settlement lifted the narrative leg from 0 to 9. That is not a crash leg.

The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. A score of 43 is neutral. It is 2 points under the line that would put the CAUTION label back on. It is 13 points above the line for a risk on label. It is 18 points short of a risk off label.

Cash markets are shut. A weekend screen is not a new score. Do not rewrite 43 because Monday has not opened.

Macro Impact. A score that rises from 39 to 43 means the book moved toward the CAUTION line and stayed neutral. The error is to buy Friday's Dow drop because the label is still neutral. The other error is to sell the crude sleeve, or to cover the long bond, because 43 is closer to 45 than 39 was. It is not a CAUTION label. A shut weekend does not rewrite a score that uses Friday's US close.

Positioning. Trade 43 as a hold, not as a dip to buy, and not as a return to CAUTION. Hold cash. Hold the crude sleeve. Stay underweight duration. Do not add high beta tech. Do not add defense. A shut weekend is not a US repair, and it is not a US break.

Key Sources. Friday closes on the same feed as the score. Reuters, 23 Oct, https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/articles/tech-selloff-relents-oil-five-103308077.html

5. United States A Hold Next Week Is the Base. A Cut Is Not.

Signal. The meeting is still next week. A Friday afternoon tool dented nothing into a cut. The close story did not print a percentage.

The calendar marks the US meeting on 27 to 28 Oct. There are no projections at that meeting. Decision day is 28 Oct (Wed). The following meeting, with projections, is 8 to 9 Dec. A hike in October is not the base in the close story. A cut is not the base in any of these notes.

The close story said Wall Street expects a hold next week, and is leaning heavily toward another rise in December. It did not print a percentage. A Friday afternoon note, using a rate tool, said traders saw a 92 percent chance of a hold next week and a 78 percent chance of a December rise. That note was not a post close print. Do not average a percentage the close story did not print with 92 and 78. Do not trade 92 percent as a decision. Do not trade 78 percent as a decision. Yesterday's 85 percent figure was a Friday Asia screen. It is not today's book.

The close story said the central bank raised its benchmark rate at its last meeting. I am not reprinting a new statement. Claims of 194,000 were already out before Friday. September payrolls were already out. September consumer prices were already out. Do not treat them as a new release.

The consumption price gauge is not out. Personal income and outlays for September, and the first read on third quarter output, are both 29 Oct (Thu) at 08:30 ET. That is the morning after the decision. It is not a print before the meeting. The close story expects that September gauge to show a 3.7 percent rate. That is an expectation. It is not a print. Do not trade 3.7 percent as a result.

Alphabet and Microsoft report on 28 Oct (Wed) at 16:00 ET on this feed. Amazon reports on 29 Oct (Thu) at 16:00 ET. Exxon and Chevron report on 30 Oct (Fri) at 08:00 ET. Apple reports on 2 Nov (Mon) at 15:00 ET. Those stamps are ahead. They are not a reason to buy Friday's dip. The next Nvidia date on this feed is 17 Nov (Tue) at 15:00 ET. The prior quarter has already been reported. Do not treat 17 Nov as this week.

December gold settled at 4,007.90 dollars, down 1.3 percent, in the Friday afternoon note. This feed's December last print was 4,010.00. Do not average them. Spot gold was at 3,998.49 dollars at 14:27 ET in that note. That is a screen. The gold fund closed at 366.61, down 0.6 percent on Friday, and down 4.0 percent from the 16 Oct close on this feed. A haven week that does not lift gold is not a gold entry.

The euro was last down 0.21 percent at 1.1191 in the close story. French yields were down 5 basis points at 5.04 percent on Friday in that story, and up nearly 27 basis points on the week. That story called the debt risk premium the highest since 2011. France will deploy 70,000 police on Saturday. That is a weekend watch. It is not a US close.

Macro Impact. A hold as the base for Wednesday keeps a cut off the table. A December lean in the close story, and a 78 percent tool reading that is not a post close print, is not a cover and not a reason to add to the short. The error is to buy the long bond because the hike is not fully decided. The other error is to price an October hike because oil settled at 116.72 dollars. The meeting has not happened.

Positioning. Stay underweight long duration. Do not cover it into Wednesday. Do not add to the short into Wednesday. Hold cash. Do not trade 92 percent as a decision. Do not trade 78 percent as a decision. Do not trade a weekend screen as the book.

Portfolio Construction

PositionWeightRationale
Overweight
Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX)+2%Hold it. Brent settled at 116.72 dollars. US crude settled at 103.27. The strait is not open. The higher settlement is why you do not sell. The 3.14 percent day, the unidentified spill, and the January bar at 111.66 are why you do not add. The December last print of 103.44 is not the settlement
Power / utilities (XLU)+1%Hold the starter. It is cleaner than a chip chase. The fund fell 0.7 percent on Friday, to 42.56. That is not a reason to add
Cash / short billsHighThe yield index closed at 4.988 percent. The score is 43. A rise inside neutral is not a bond buy
Underweight
Long duration (TLT, IEF)−5%The yield index rose 3.5 basis points. A cash story rose by a different amount. Do not average them. A priced hold next week is not a cover. A December lean is not a decision. Do not add to the short
Semis / high beta tech (SMH)−2%The semiconductor index rose 0.4 percent in the close story. The fund rose 0.7 percent. That is not a repair of Thursday. Do not buy the dip. Do not sell the book because the Dow fell
Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL)−2%No all clear. The strait is not open. A higher Brent settlement is not a reason to add airlines
China cyclicals (FXI, EEM)−2%No new decision. The China fund fell 0.4 percent. Third quarter growth already printed. Do not chase the dip
Defense (ITA, LMT)0%A comment about ending the war, or letting it wind down, is not an order. The fund fell 1.1 percent, to 202.23. Lockheed rose 2.4 percent on this feed, to 604.18. Do not add defense
Gold (GLD)0%The fund fell 0.6 percent. December settled at 4,007.90 dollars, down 1.3 percent. Not a new entry
Financials (XLF)0%The fund fell 1.3 percent, to 55.90. American Express fell 3.7 percent in the close story. Keep it small. Do not add

Cash stays high. A 43 score says the CAUTION label is still off and the dip bid is still off. It does not say buy duration, sell energy, or buy chips. Trade 43 as a 4.988 percent yield index, a Brent settlement of 116.72 dollars, a US crude settlement of 103.27 dollars, a strait that is not open, and a Dow that fell 1.23 percent. The higher oil settlement is a reason to hold the sleeve. It is not a reason to add it. The yield bounce is a reason not to cover the duration short. It is not a reason to add to it.

CB Elasticity545Y at 4.72% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target

Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF

The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 19.45, 10Y at 4.99%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.

The label did not flip. The score is 43. Yesterday it was 39. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. A higher score means more stress. The score rose because the central bank leg rose more than the flow leg eased. It did not cross 45. It did not cross 30. It did not move to a crash. It did not return to CAUTION.

Data through the 23 Oct 2026 US close. This is a Saturday edition after that close. Cash markets are shut. A weekend screen is not a settlement. Do not trade a shut session as a close.
