October 21, 2026 · Top 5 regime drivers, risk matrix, positioning
The score fell to 38. Neutral, not a buy.
Crude settled lower. The strait is shut.
The Dow rose. Chips did not.
Yields eased. Do not buy bonds.
Reports today. Do not buy chips.REGIME FLIP. Score 38 of 100. The label is NEUTRAL. Yesterday the score was 47. The label was CAUTION. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. The score fell 9 points and crossed 45. It did not fall through 30.
The oil settlement fell. That is a close. It is not an opening of the strait. A Wednesday screen is not a new settlement.
Do not buy the dip because the label flipped. Do not sell the crude sleeve because the settlement fell. Do not add it because a screen is higher. Do not buy the long bond because yields eased.
Tuesday is the last completed US session. Oil rows name the contract and the source. A Wednesday screen is not a settlement. The continuous crude feed is not the expired November contract, and it is not the December settlement. Do not average the Wednesday screens.
| Asset | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 (Tue close) | 7,712.57 | Up 21.84 points, or 0.28 percent, vs Monday's 7,690.73 |
| Nasdaq Composite (Tue close) | 26,424.82 | Down 6.07 points, or 0.02 percent, vs Monday's 26,430.89 |
| Dow (Tue close) | 52,495.88 | Up 529.85 points, or 1.02 percent, vs Monday's 51,966.03 |
| Russell 2000 (Tue close) | 2,773.42 | Up 1.7 percent vs Monday's 2,728.30. The close story called that 1.7 percent |
| VIX (Tue close) | 17.31 | Down 1.13 points vs Monday's 18.44. The close is under 20 |
| US 10-year yield index (Tue close) | 5.117% | Down 1.9 basis points vs Monday's 5.136. Not the cash yield |
| 5-year yield index (Tue close) | 4.935% | Up 0.6 basis points vs Monday's 4.929. Not the cash yield |
| November WTI (Tue settlement) | 101.79 dollars | Down 1.87 dollars, or 1.8 percent, vs Monday's 103.66. Expired Tuesday. Close story |
| November WTI (Tue high) | 110.48 dollars | A high, not a settlement. The close story said it was the highest since April for a nearby contract |
| December WTI (Tue settlement) | 97.82 dollars | Down 72 cents in the close story. The active contract after Tuesday's expiry. Not November |
| Brent (Tue settlement) | 108.79 dollars | Down 76 cents, or 0.69 percent. Close story. This replaces Friday's 109.86 as the last settlement |
| Brent (Tue high) | 111.99 dollars | A five month high in the close story. Not a settlement |
| Brent (Wed screen, 0022 GMT) | 109.64 dollars | Up 85 cents, or 0.78 percent, from the settlement. Not a settlement |
| Brent (later Asia note) | 110.03 dollars | The note called that 1.1 percent higher. Not a settlement. Do not average with 109.64 |
| WTI (Wed screen, 0022 GMT) | 98.58 dollars | Up 76 cents, or 0.78 percent. That lines up with December, not with expired November |
| Continuous crude (this feed, Tue bar) | 99.15 dollars | Not the November settlement of 101.79. Not the December settlement of 97.82 |
| Continuous Brent (this feed, Tue bar) | 110.38 dollars | Not the settlement of 108.79. Do not trade it as the close |
| Gold fund (Tue close) | 377.65 | Down 0.5 percent vs Monday's 379.69. Not a futures settlement |
| Dollar index (Tue close) | 101.78 | Down 0.20 points, or 0.2 percent, vs Monday's 101.98 on this feed |
The continuous crude feed's Monday bar was the November settlement of 103.66. Its Tuesday bar is near 99.15. That gap is not a crash in the 101.79 settlement. November expired. December settled at 97.82. A headline near 98 or 99 after the expiry can be December. It is not, by itself, November falling apart.
This note does not cite oil volume. The stock close story said 15.91 billion shares changed hands, against a 17.15 billion average for the last 20 sessions. That is the close story's figure. It is not an oil volume claim.
The Score Flipped to Neutral. That Is Not a Buy.Signal. The label moved. The book should not.
The score is 38. Yesterday it was 47. Fiscal pressure is 61, down from 63. Central bank pressure is 50, down from 59. Flow pressure is 28, down from 38. Narrative stress is 1, down from 20. VIX closed at 17.31, down 1.13 points from Monday's 18.44. The yield index closed at 5.117 percent, down 1.9 basis points from Monday's 5.136. The 5 year yield index closed at 4.935 percent, up 0.6 basis points. The flow drop is the fear gauge. The narrative drop is a broader cash tape. Together they pulled the score through 45.
The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. A score of 38 is neutral. It is 8 points above the line for a risk on label. It is 23 points short of a risk off label.
Asia is open. This pull is not a close. At 04:46 CEST the Kospi last printed 5,778.95, up 4.1 percent from Tuesday's close of 5,552.74. Tuesday's close was down 3.7 percent from Monday's 5,768.01. That close is less bad than the open print used in Tuesday morning's update. The session ends at 08:30 CEST. A wire said Korean shares were up 4 percent, and its summary said 4.6 percent. Do not average those with 4.1. Do not call any of them a close.
The Nikkei last printed 64,816.80, up 1.2 percent from Tuesday's close of 64,075.42. Tuesday's close was down 1.3 percent from Monday. The session ends at 08:00 CEST. A wire said the Nikkei climbed 1.3 percent. That is a different clock. Do not average 1.2 and 1.3.
A markets note said S&P futures were up 0.3 percent while Asia was open. That is a screen. It is not a cash close.
Macro Impact. A score that falls from 47 to 38 means the CAUTION label is off, and the crash call is still not on. The error is to buy Tuesday's bounce because the label flipped. The other error is to sell the crude sleeve, or to buy the long bond, because 38 feels calmer than 47. The Dow rose 1.02 percent. The Nasdaq was down 0.02 percent. Those are not the same tape. An open Korea bounce does not rewrite a score that uses Tuesday's US close.
Positioning. Trade 38 as a flip, not as a dip to buy, and not as an all clear. Hold cash. Hold the crude sleeve. Stay underweight duration. Do not add high beta tech. Do not add defense. A Korea screen is not a US repair.
Key Sources. Tuesday closes on the same feed as the score. Reuters, 21 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/world/china/global-markets-global-markets-2026-10-21/
Crude Settled Lower. The Strait Is Not Open.Signal. Tuesday's settlement reversed Monday's rise. It did not open the strait.
The close story said Brent settled down 76 cents, or 0.69 percent, at 108.79 dollars. The session high was 111.99 dollars, a five month high. That high is not the settlement. Friday's settlement of 109.86 is no longer the last one. Adding 76 cents to 108.79 lands on 109.55, which matches this feed's Monday bar. That is the prior settlement implied by the close story. Do not put Friday's 109.86 back in front of Tuesday's close.
November WTI expired on Tuesday. The close story said it settled down 1.87 dollars, or 1.8 percent, at 101.79 dollars, from Monday's 103.66. The session high was 110.48 dollars. That high is not the settlement. The contract is expired. Do not trade a later headline as a new November close.
December is the active contract. The close story said it settled down 72 cents, at 97.82 dollars. That is not November. A Wednesday screen of 98.58 dollars, up 76 cents at 0022 GMT, lines up with December. It does not mean November fell from 101.79 to 98.58.
Two Wednesday Brent screens disagree. At 0022 GMT a wire had Brent up 85 cents, at 109.64 dollars. A later Asia note had Brent 1.1 percent higher, at 110.03 dollars. This feed's Tuesday bar printed 110.38. None of those is the settlement. Do not average 109.64, 110.03, and 110.38. Do not replace 108.79 with any of them.
This feed's continuous crude bar printed 99.15 on Tuesday. That is not 101.79 and it is not 97.82. Do not trade 99.15 as November falling apart, and do not trade it as the December settlement.
The strait is not open. Iran's president met Pakistan's army chief in Tehran on Tuesday. The close story weighed that meeting, a mediation channel, against Houthi attacks and reports of vessel attacks in the Gulf. A meeting is not an opening. A later markets note, citing a bank, said prices fell on unconfirmed peace reports and then retraced after a denial. The settlement story does not say that. Do not trade the denial as a new close. The settlement is the close.
Iran's foreign minister said in a Tuesday interview, cited by the Wednesday oil wire, that Iran has not received a response from Saudi Arabia or the Houthis to an offer to help broker talks. No response is not a deal.
A supertanker caught fire after striking a mine south of the strait, Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy said, according to Iranian media in that same wire. That is a claim in the wire. It is not a new settlement. Kpler's note of at least 18 vessel attacks over two weeks is the same note as Monday. It is not a new daily toll.
The death toll from Monday's attack on a training camp in Yemen's Shabwa province rose to 73, the provincial media office said. Fourteen people remained missing. More than 200 were injured. That is a casualty figure. It is not an oil close.
Britain will fly Typhoon jets on defensive missions to protect Saudi cities and infrastructure from Houthi attacks, the defence ministry said on Tuesday. The ministry said the aircraft would not conduct offensive strikes. The support follows a Saudi request. A defensive mission is not a US order. It is also not a reason to sell crude, because the strait is still not open.
The waiver is still a review, not a cargo. No new final decision arrived in the wires used here.
Macro Impact. A 1.8 percent drop in the expired November settlement, to 101.79 dollars, does not open the strait and does not replace the missing Gulf flow. Selling the sleeve because November expired lower, or because the continuous feed shows 99.15, is the trap. Adding the sleeve because a Wednesday screen is higher, or because Britain sent defensive jets, is the other trap. The energy sector fund rose 0.3 percent on Tuesday, to 67.97. The oil fund eased 0.1 percent, to 160.61. Those are not a crash, and they are not a new entry.
Positioning. Hold the core crude sleeve. Do not sell it. Do not add it. Do not trade 99.15 as November. Do not trade 98.58 as a crash in 101.79. Do not trade a Wednesday screen as a close. Do not add defense. Cash is still better than a chase into an open Asia session.

The Dow Rose. Chips Did Not.Signal. Tuesday's cash close is a broader tape than Monday. It is not a chip repair.
The S&P 500 rose 0.28 percent, to 7,712.57. The Dow rose 1.02 percent, to 52,495.88. The Nasdaq eased 0.02 percent, to 26,424.82. The Russell 2000 rose 1.7 percent, to 2,773.42. The close story said advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 2.04 to 1 on the New York exchange, and by 2.02 to 1 on the Nasdaq. Monday was the opposite shape. Seven sectors were not the story on Tuesday. Healthcare led, and the close story said that sector hit a record. Technology was the biggest drag. The technology sector eased 0.3 percent in the close story.
The healthcare fund rose 2.4 percent on this feed, to 179.82 from Monday's 175.65. The utilities fund rose 1.3 percent, to 41.88. The close story said the utilities sector rose 1.2 percent. Do not average 1.3 and 1.2. The financials fund rose 1.2 percent, to 55.72. The close story said the financials sector rose 1 percent. Do not average those either. The energy sector fund rose 0.3 percent even as crude settled lower.
The chip index eased 0.3 percent, to 11,283.81 from Monday's 11,316.34. The semiconductor fund eased 0.4 percent, to 546.36. Nvidia eased 0.3 percent, to 216.47 from Monday's 217.09. A fraction lower is not a new crash, and it is not a repair of last week's streak.
Netflix finished 1.7 percent lower in the cash session, at 68.69 from Monday's 69.85. It reported at 16:00 ET on Tuesday. The close story said the fourth quarter profit forecast was weaker than expected, and that the price was 6 percent lower after the bell. That after bell move is the close story's figure. It is not this feed's cash close.
Meta finished 1.6 percent lower, at 694.25. Tesla rose 1.5 percent, to 373.71. Both report today at 16:00 ET, with Lam Research and Texas Instruments on the same stamp. Alphabet finished 1 percent lower in the close story. Do not treat a single late print as a market wide repair.
SpaceX reported a third quarter profit after the close that came in ahead of estimates, the close story said, and the price was 4 percent higher in late trading. That is one company. It is not a cash close. A merger comment is not a cash close.
A wire said an Australian data centre operator shed 44 percent in Wednesday trade after cutting its revenue forecast and putting future developments on hold. That session is still open. It closes at 07:00 CEST. It is not a US close, and it is not a reason to buy US chips because Korea is bouncing.
Macro Impact. A 1.02 percent rise in the Dow, with the Nasdaq flat and the chip index lower, is a rotation. It is why narrative stress fell to 1. It is not a reason to buy the semiconductor fund. Shorting the Dow because chips eased is the other error. The Dow rose 1.02 percent. It is not the chip tape.
Positioning. Do not buy the semiconductor fund. Do not buy the US chip open because Korea is up in an open session. Do not add high beta tech into today's reports. A starter in utilities is still cleaner than a chip dip, and the sector already rose. It is not a reason to add. Keep financials small. The fund rose 1.2 percent. That is not a new entry.

Yields Eased. Do Not Buy Bonds.Signal. No new US inflation print arrived overnight. Tuesday's yield close eased. A hold next week is the priced base. A cut is not. A December hike is the economist base in a poll that closed Tuesday.
The 10 year yield index closed at 5.117 percent, down 1.9 basis points from Monday's 5.136. The 5 year yield index closed at 4.935 percent, up 0.6 basis points. Those are not the same move. The long bond fund rose 0.8 percent, to 80.13. That is a bounce. It is not a cover.
A Wednesday markets note said the cash 10 year yield was up 1 basis point, at 5.123 percent. That is a screen. It is not this index close. Do not average 5.117 and 5.123.
A poll of economists, taken 16 to 20 Oct, said 94 of 100 expect no change at the 27 to 28 Oct meeting, and that the policy rate stays in a 3.75 to 4.00 percent range. All 100 expect a hike in December. Last month less than half said that. A markets note, citing the CME tool, said traders priced an 83 percent chance of a hold this month, little changed from a day earlier. Those are different clocks. Do not average 83 and 94. A hike in October is not the base case. A cut is not the base case.
The chair has kept mum, the poll said. There are no projections at the October meeting. The calendar marks projections for 8 to 9 Dec, not for October. Decision day is 28 Oct (Wed). In September the central bank raised the policy rate by 25 basis points.
The consumption price gauge for September, and the first read on third quarter output, are both 29 Oct (Thu) at 08:30 ET. That is the morning after the decision. It is not a print before the meeting.
The dollar index on this feed closed Tuesday at 101.78, down 0.2 percent from Monday's 101.98. A Wednesday wire said the index was steady at 101.78 after declining 0.2 percent on Tuesday. That matches this close. It is not a new trend. The gold fund closed at 377.65, down 0.5 percent. This feed's December gold last print was 4,134.30, down 0.6 percent from Monday's 4,160.10. I am not calling that a settlement.
Macro Impact. A 1.9 basis point ease in the yield index, with a December hike priced by every economist in that poll, keeps a cut off the table. It does not make October the base case for a hike. The error is to buy the long bond because the label flipped and the yield index eased. The other error is to add to the duration short because the 5 year index rose 0.6 basis points, or because the poll is unanimous on December.
Positioning. Stay underweight long duration. Do not cover it. Do not add to the short. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. The long bond fund rose 0.8 percent on Tuesday. That is not a buy, and it is not a reason to add to the short.

Today's Reports Are the Test. Do Not Buy Chips.Signal. Netflix has already reported. Tesla and Meta have not.
This feed stamps Tesla, Meta, Lam Research, and Texas Instruments at 16:00 ET today, 21 Oct (Wed). Netflix's stamp was 16:00 ET on Tuesday. The cash close was already lower, and the close story's after bell move was lower still. A soft forecast is not a reason to buy the chip dip before today's prints. It is also not a reason to short the Dow, which rose 1.02 percent.
The next Nvidia date on this feed is 17 Nov (Tue). That is outside this window. Do not treat it as this week.
Alphabet and Microsoft are stamped at 16:00 ET on 28 Oct (Wed), the decision day. Amazon is stamped at 16:00 ET on 29 Oct (Thu). Those are next week. They are not today. The funding worry in front of today's prints is the same worry as last week. A Korea bounce in an open session does not retire it.
China is not a new trade. The loan rate decision and the 4.5 percent growth print are already out. The China fund closed Tuesday at 33.51, down 0.1 percent from Monday's 33.53. The emerging market fund was flat, at 63.32. Do not chase either.
Macro Impact. Reports today can move the chip tape without moving the regime label. The score uses Tuesday's close. It will not know Tesla or Meta until the next session. Buying the semiconductor fund into an unreported print, because the score flipped, is how a 38 score becomes a worse book. Ignoring a soft forecast and calling the Dow rise a chip repair is the other error.
Positioning. Do not buy the semiconductor fund. Do not add high beta tech. Do not short the Dow into today's prints. Hold the crude sleeve. Stay underweight duration. Cash is still better than a chase.

| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX) | +2% | Hold it. November expired at 101.79 dollars. December settled at 97.82. The strait is not open. The lower settlement is why you do not add. The Wednesday screen is why you do not sell. The continuous print of 99.15 is neither settlement |
| Power / utilities (XLU) | +1% | Hold the starter. It is cleaner than a chip dip. The fund rose 1.3 percent on Tuesday. That is not a reason to add |
| Cash / short bills | High | The yield index closed at 5.117 percent. The score is 38. A flip to neutral is not a bond buy |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT, IEF) | −5% | Tuesday's close eased 1.9 basis points. A priced hold next week is not a cover. A December hike is the economist base. Do not add to the short |
| Semis / high beta tech (SMH) | −2% | The chip index eased 0.3 percent. Reports are today. Do not buy the dip. Do not short the Dow |
| Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL) | −2% | No all clear. The strait is not open. Defensive jets are not a reason to add airlines |
| China cyclicals (FXI, EEM) | −2% | No new decision. The China fund eased 0.1 percent. Do not chase |
| Defense (ITA, LMT) | 0% | Britain approved defensive missions, not offensive strikes. That is not a US order. Do not add defense |
| Gold (GLD) | 0% | The fund fell 0.5 percent. No new settlement. Not a new entry |
| Financials (XLF) | 0% | The fund rose 1.2 percent. Keep it small. Do not add |
Cash stays high. A 38 score says the crash urgency is off and the dip bid is still off. It does not say buy duration, sell energy, or buy chips. Trade 38 as a 5.117 percent yield index, a December settlement of 97.82 dollars, an expired November settlement of 101.79 dollars, a strait that is not open, and a stock tape that rose in the Dow and not in chips.
| Date | Event | Importance |

| 21 Oct (Wed) | Tesla, Meta, Lam Research, and Texas Instruments. This feed stamps all four at 16:00 ET. Not out. Do not buy chips into the prints | High |
| 21 Oct (Wed) | A markets note said a US envoy is due to meet Russia's president later today. That is not a settlement, and it is not an opening of the strait | Medium |
| 22 Oct (Thu) | Procter and Gamble stamp on this feed, 08:00 ET | Medium |
| 24 Oct (Sat) | A wire said more protests are planned in France for Saturday. Not a US close | Low |
| 26 Oct (Mon) | Egypt parliament vote on military support for Saudi Arabia, delayed from last week. Not a deployment | Medium |
| 27 to 28 Oct (Tue to Wed) | US policy meeting. No projections. Decision day is 28 Oct (Wed). A hike is not the base case. A cut is not the base case | High |
| 28 Oct (Wed) | US policy decision. Alphabet and Microsoft stamps on this feed, 16:00 ET. A dollar wire said the Bank of Canada and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand decide the same day, and that traders are betting on quarter point hikes by both. That is a bet in a wire | High |
| 29 Oct (Thu) | Personal income and outlays for September, and the first read on third quarter output, both 08:30 ET. The morning after the decision. Amazon stamp on this feed, 16:00 ET. A dollar wire put the European Central Bank in a three day sequence starting 28 Oct (Wed). If that sequence holds, this is the middle day. This note does not have a separate calendar page for that bank | High |
| 30 Oct (Fri) | Exxon and Chevron stamps on this feed, 08:00 ET. A poll said the Bank of Japan is expected to hold that day and to hike in December. That is a poll, not a decision | High |

Weekdays above match the calendar. Netflix already reported on 20 Oct (Tue). Do not treat 17 Nov as this week. September consumer prices already printed. Do not treat them as a new release.
| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 61 | 10Y at 5.12% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 50 | 5Y at 4.85% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 28 | VIX 17.3 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 1 | SPY -0.1%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth -29 |
| Composite | 38 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 17.31, 10Y at 5.12%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
The label flipped. The score is 38. Yesterday it was 47. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. A higher score means more stress. The score fell because the fear gauge fell and the cash tape broadened. It crossed 45. It did not cross 30. It did not move to a crash. It did flip out of CAUTION.
