Riyadh airport stays shut this week. No new death toll.
Score is 41. Still neutral. Do not buy the bond.NOT A REGIME FLIP. Score 41, three points above Monday's 38. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. The label is still NEUTRAL.
The oil story did change direction. Monday's note had a lower screen and an unconfirmed ceasefire. Monday's settlement went the other way. December Brent settled at 106.65 dollars. November WTI settled at 93.74 dollars. Do not sell energy on Sunday's screen. Do not chase Monday's settle into Wednesday's inflation print. Do not buy the bond. Do not buy Monday's chip dip.
This is a Tuesday note after Monday's US stock close, and before Tuesday's US open. Bank results are not in. The Treasury market was shut on Monday for Columbus Day. Stocks were open. Volume was light.
Monday 12 Oct is the last completed US stock session. The Treasury market was shut. Oil rows below are named settlements, not a continuous screen.

| US 10Y yield index | 5.244% | No Monday cash close. Friday's close still stands |
| US 5Y yield index | 5.021% | No Monday cash close. Friday's close still stands |
| December Brent (Mon settle) | 106.65 dollars | +1.93 dollars vs Friday's 104.72. Bloomberg called that 1.8 percent |
| November WTI (Mon settle) | 93.74 dollars | +1.89 dollars vs Friday's 91.85. Bloomberg called that 2.1 percent |
| Gold fund (GLD) | 382.15 dollars | −0.6% (Mon) |
| Dollar index | 102.41 | +0.20 points (Mon) |
The S&P 500 closed Monday at 7,807.24, down 4.30 points, or 0.06 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 27,245.90, down 120.27 points, or 0.44 percent. The Dow closed at 51,850.55, up 195.60 points, or 0.38 percent (Reuters, 12 Oct).
Volume was light. 12.67 billion shares changed hands, against a 20-day average of 17.62 billion. Columbus Day is not a stock holiday. It is a bond holiday (Reuters, 12 Oct; Bureau of Labor Statistics October schedule).
VIX closed at 15.21, up 0.37 points from Friday's 14.84. Fear is a bit less cheap. It is not stressed.
There is no Monday cash yield. Friday's 10-year yield index close remains 5.244 percent. Friday's 5-year yield index close remains 5.021 percent. A fund that tracks long Treasuries traded up 0.1 percent, to 78.05 dollars. That is not a yield.
December Brent settled at 106.65 dollars, up 1.93 dollars from Friday's 104.72 dollar settlement. Bloomberg called the move 1.8 percent. November WTI settled at 93.74 dollars, up 1.89 dollars from Friday's 91.85 dollar settlement. Bloomberg called that 2.1 percent (Bloomberg, via Rigzone, 12 Oct). Reuters said oil jumped nearly 2 dollars a barrel. Those two reads agree.
A continuous screen last printed 105.43 dollars on the Brent line and 92.58 dollars on the WTI line. Those are not the settlements. Do not use them. An early Tuesday Reuters headline had oil ticking lower. That headline had no settlement in this note. It is not a new close.
GLD closed at 382.15 dollars, down 0.6 percent from Friday's 384.58 dollars. This note does not call a gold futures settlement.
The dollar index closed at 102.41, up 0.20 points from Friday's 102.21. That is not a squeeze.
Signal. Sunday's lower screen is dead. Monday printed a higher settlement. The reason is that the energy ceasefire did not hold.
December Brent settled at 106.65 dollars. November WTI settled at 93.74 dollars. Those are the headlines. They are up 1.93 dollars and 1.89 dollars from Friday's settlements of 104.72 and 91.85 dollars (Bloomberg, via Rigzone, 12 Oct).
Ukraine will keep striking Russian targets, President Zelenskyy said, because Moscow is still hitting Ukrainian energy sites. He said he learned of the truce from social media. Energy Aspects said this is not a ceasefire that would be expected to hold, and that it is not even in place (Bloomberg, 12 Oct). Reuters and AP both reported that Kyiv says Russia hit energy targets after the claim.
The diesel story did not cancel the settle. After the Friday announcement, the US Treasury issued a waiver for previously sanctioned Russian fuel. Moscow said it will ship 500,000 tons. Energy Aspects said those volumes make no difference (Bloomberg, 12 Oct). This note does not treat those tons as already in the tanks.
The Gulf storm shut-in has no new official barrel count. Saturday's figure still stands: 1,402,692 barrels a day, or 68.76 percent of Gulf oil. Bloomberg said offshore production has recovered from Friday, when 72 percent of regional crude was offline. That 72 percent is a Friday description. It is not a new official print. This note does not mark the pipes as back, and it does not average the two figures.
Macro Impact. A 1.93 dollar rise in the December Brent settlement, from 104.72 dollars to 106.65 dollars, is the first close that includes the weekend strikes and the failed ceasefire claim. Selling the core energy sleeve into that close, because Sunday's screen was lower, is how a 41 score becomes a worse book. Chasing the same close into Wednesday's inflation print is the other mistake. The settlement is above 100 dollars. The strait is not open. The shut-in has no new official number.
Positioning. Hold the core energy sleeve (USO, XOM, CVX). Do not sell it. Do not add it. USO closed Monday at 151.03 dollars, up 1.9 percent. XOM closed at 172.15 dollars, up 1.9 percent. CVX closed at 215.00 dollars, up 1.4 percent. XLE closed at 66.01 dollars, up 1.4 percent. Reuters said the energy sector rose 1.5 percent. The sleeve already worked. Cash still beats a chase into Wednesday.

Signal. The new fact is not a reopening. It is that the workaround is now an explicit target.
Iran's security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, said a US and Emirati shuttle that moves oil out of the Strait of Hormuz is now a target. He claimed Iran had been striking five or six participating vessels a night for weeks. That nightly count is a claim. It is not a verified tally (Al Jazeera, 12 Oct).
Overnight from Sunday to Monday, two outbound tankers and one ship near Oman's Sohar anchorage were targeted (Al Jazeera, 12 Oct). Bloomberg said another ship was hit in the strait on Monday morning, New York time, citing Iranian state media. Empty supertankers have been stopping or turning away from the Gulf (Bloomberg, 12 Oct).
Sunday's line still stands. Tehran called the US reply to its seven conditions insufficient. The strait does not fully reopen until those conditions are met. Do not trade the diesel headline as if it cancelled that.
Windward, via Al Jazeera, put at least 15 ships targeted in October so far. Late September traffic was 31 ships a day, against 138 before the war. Freight was 25 to 30 percent of the cost of Gulf crude, against 1 to 3 percent before the war. National oil companies have offered discounts of up to 35 dollars a barrel below official selling prices. That discount is not a crude settlement.
A separate wire said Britain views a security incident at a US-used air base as almost certainly directed by Iran. The home secretary said so on Monday. A joint statement from Britain, the United States, and about two dozen other countries condemned Iranian attacks on their territory (AP, 12 Oct). That is not a new barrel. It is the war not staying in the strait.
Macro Impact. A fifth of the world's oil and liquefied gas used to move through that strait, before the war that started at the end of February. A higher Monday settlement does not open it. A lower early Tuesday headline does not open it either. If the shuttle keeps getting hit, the freight premium stays in the price even if a few more barrels move. If talks suddenly clear the conditions, the settlement can give back the 1.93 dollars. Neither of those is in hand.
Positioning. Do not sell energy on a strait-open story. There is no such story today. Do not buy a tanker bounce on two or three damaged ships. Those hits are a risk, not a position. Do not add China (FXI, EEM) on a stale quota. FXI closed Monday at 34.14 dollars, down 0.3 percent. EEM closed at 66.15 dollars, down 1.0 percent.

The Airport Stays Shut. There Is No New Death Toll.Signal. The operational fact is the closure. It is not a new casualty count.
AP said King Khalid International Airport remained closed on Monday. Workers in the capital's financial district were told to work from home. Reuters headlined that the capital airport is to remain shut this week as airlines cancel services. This note did not pull the full Reuters body. It does not invent a reopening date, and it does not replace last week's flight schedule with an unread delay.
Do not add a new death to the weekend toll. AP's Monday account of Saturday's strike is at least 13 dead and more than 300 wounded. Bloomberg put the weekend attacks at the transit hub at at least 14 dead and hundreds wounded. That 14 matches Saturday's 13 plus Sunday's separate one. It is not a Monday strike. A Monday funeral in Jordan was for a person already killed. It is not a new attack.
Saudi Arabia said it had detected and was responding to fresh hostile threats on Monday (Bloomberg, 12 Oct). Threats are not a new death toll. The oil congress in the kingdom went ahead. That is not an all-clear.
A Houthi-run health ministry said airstrikes in al-Jawf killed nine people, including five children. That is a claim, carried by a Houthi agency (AP, 12 Oct). This note does not add it to the Riyadh count.
There was no new US order to join Saudi strikes. Sunday's "we may" is still not a fill.
Macro Impact. A shut capital airport, with airlines cancelling services, is a lasting hit to Gulf travel. It is already in Monday's oil settlement. It is not a reason to add energy on top of a 1.93 dollar rise. It is a reason to stay light airlines. It is not jet fuel back to normal.
Positioning. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL). Delta closed Monday at 80.11 dollars, down 2.5 percent. American closed at 12.62 dollars, down 1.1 percent. Do not add defense. ITA closed at 206.03 dollars, down 0.3 percent. "We may" is still not an order.

The Score Is 41. Do Not Buy the Bond.Signal. Tuesday did not flip the regime. It also did not fund a bond buy. There was no cash bond session to fund one.
The score is 41. Monday's note was 38. Fiscal pressure is 66, unchanged. Central bank pressure is 55, three points under Monday's 58. Flow pressure is 24, up from 16. Narrative stress is 5, up from 0. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for NEUTRAL runs from 30 to 44. This is inside the band, four points under the line. The three-point rise is not a flip.
The mix is the point. A 10-year yield index at 5.244 percent is still restrictive. That is Friday's cash close. Flow rose because VIX closed at 15.21, not because fear broke. Narrative rose because the Nasdaq fell while the S&P was flat. A score of 41 is not 66, and it is not an all-clear into Wednesday.
Cleveland Fed president Beth Hammack said the central bank should move relatively quickly to a more restrictive stance. She said inflation has become more broad-based and is starting to influence firms' price-setting plans (Reuters, 12 Oct).
Traders priced an almost 22 percent chance of a rate rise at this month's meeting, up from 17.7 percent on Friday, on the CME tool cited by Reuters. Those are implied odds, not a new official path. A cut is not the base case. This note does not carry an unread December odds figure forward.
September consumer prices are due Wednesday, 14 Oct (Wed), at 08:30 ET. This note does not treat any forecast as the number.
Macro Impact. A score of 41 means the CAUTION label stays off. It does not mean the constraint is gone. RISK-ON starts below 30. A hot CPI on Wednesday can put the prior yield high back in play. A cool CPI can extend the dip from earlier in the month. Neither print is in hand. You could not express a duration view in cash bonds on Monday, because the bond market was shut. Tuesday is the first bank results. Wednesday is the inflation print. That is a bad window to discover a duration view.
Positioning. Stay underweight long duration (TLT, IEF). Do not cover because the long Treasury fund rose 0.1 percent on a day the cash market was shut. Do not add to the short because there was no cash yield to fade. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. Keep financials small (XLF). XLF rose 0.6 percent on Monday, to 55.05 dollars. Bank results start Tuesday, before the US open. That is not a reason to add duration into CPI.

Signal. Monday did print a new chip close. It was worse, not better.
The Philadelphia semiconductor index finished down 2.7 percent, at a three-week low (Reuters, 12 Oct). The semiconductor fund closed at 590.99 dollars, down 2.0 percent. Nvidia closed at 226.32 dollars, down 1.3 percent. AMD closed at 594.24 dollars, down 2.3 percent. Micron closed at 989.04 dollars, down 3.9 percent. Broadcom closed at 354.73 dollars, down 1.9 percent.
The bounce was not in chips. Microsoft closed at 541.15 dollars, up 1.1 percent. Reuters said its market value climbed above 4 trillion dollars for the first time in a year, after it announced a major deployment of its own AI chips. That is a platform bid. It is not a chip bid. Technology as a sector fell 0.9 percent (Reuters, 12 Oct).
Analysts expect S&P 500 earnings to be up 30.6 percent in the third quarter, on LSEG data cited by Reuters. Major US banks, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup, report early on Tuesday. Those results are not in this note.
Nvidia's following results are 17 Nov (Tue). That is outside this window. Nvidia already reported in August.
Macro Impact. A chip index down 2.7 percent, with the Nasdaq down 0.44 percent, the S&P down 0.06 percent, and VIX at 15.21, is a split tape. It is not a crash. It is also not a repair of Friday's split. CPI is Wednesday. Banks are Tuesday. Chasing a 1.3 percent Nvidia dip into that window is how a 41 score becomes a higher score with the Nasdaq lower.
Positioning. Do not buy the Nasdaq dip. Do not short Nvidia because Monday was down 1.3 percent. That is not a crack in the business. Stay underweight high-beta semis (SMH). A starter in utilities is still the cleaner power expression. XLU rose 0.5 percent on Monday, to 41.63 dollars. Constellation fell 1.4 percent, to 293.89 dollars. Do not chase either print.

| Dollar | Slightly firmer | Low | 1 to 4 wk | ↗️ Index 102.41, up 0.20 points. Not a squeeze |
| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX) | +2% | Hold it. The named settle was up. Hormuz is not open. The shut-in has no new official count. The higher settle is why you do not add. The missing confirmation is why you do not sell |
| Power / utilities (XLU) | +1% | Hold the starter. Constellation fell 1.4 percent. Do not chase that dip, and do not sell the theme |
| Cash / short bills | High | The 10-year index is 5.244 percent. CPI is Wednesday. A 41 score is not a bond buy |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT, IEF) | −5% | The score did not flip. The bond market was shut. A 0.1 percent rise in the long fund does not fund the long end |
| Semis / high-beta tech (SMH) | −2% | The chip index fell 2.7 percent. Microsoft's own chips are not a bid for the fund. Do not chase the dip. Do not short Nvidia |
| Small caps (IWM) | −2% | IWM fell 0.4 percent on Monday, to 277.90 dollars. A light holiday session does not fix the yield level |
| Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL) | −2% | The Riyadh airport is still shut. Delta fell 2.5 percent. That is not jet fuel back to normal. Do not add |
| China cyclicals (FXI, EEM) | −2% | No new China print with a number in this note. Do not add into CPI |
| Defense (ITA, LMT) | 0% | No new order. Do not add defense on a Monday headline |
| Gold (GLD) | 0% | Down 0.6 percent. No futures settlement. Not a new entry |
| Staples (XLP) | 0% | Up 1.2 percent, to 84.41 dollars. Cash still does the job into CPI |
Cash stays high. The hold at 41 says leave the crash urgency off. It does not say buy duration, sell energy, or buy Monday's chip dip. Trade 41 as a 5.244 percent 10-year, a December Brent settlement of 106.65 dollars, a strait that is not open, a shut-in that is still 68.76 percent, and a chip tape that got worse.
| Date | Event | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| 13 Oct (Tue) | Major US banks report early, before the US open. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup are in the first set. Results are not in this note | High |
| 14 Oct (Wed) | September CPI, 08:30 ET. September real earnings, 08:30 ET. No forecast in this note is the print | High |
| 15 Oct (Thu) | September producer prices, 08:30 ET. August retail sales, 08:30 ET. That retail date is the August report, not September | Medium |
| 16 Oct (Fri) | September import and export prices, 08:30 ET | Medium |
| 20 Oct (Tue) | State employment and unemployment, September, 10:00 ET | Low |
| 21 Oct (Wed) | Usual weekly earnings, third quarter, 10:00 ET | Low |
| 27 to 28 Oct (Tue to Wed) | Next policy meeting. Just past this window. No projections at this meeting. A cut is not the base case | High |
| 3 Nov (Tue) | US midterms. Outside this window | Medium |
| 17 Nov (Tue) | Nvidia's following results. Outside this window. Already reported in August | Low |
| 8 to 9 Dec (Tue to Wed) | Following policy meeting, with projections. A cut is not the base case in this note | High |
Weekdays above match the calendar. September CPI, real earnings, producer prices, and import prices are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics October schedule. August retail sales on 15 Oct (Thu) is from the Census release schedule. The policy dates are from the Federal Reserve calendar. Bank timing is the scheduled start, not a forecast of the prints. Nvidia already reported in August. Do not treat November as this week.
| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 66 | 10Y at 5.24% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 55 | 5Y at 4.97% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 24 | VIX 15.2 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 5 | SPY -0.1%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth -33 |
| Composite | 41 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 15.21, 10Y at 5.24%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
This is not a flip. Monday's reading was 38 NEUTRAL. Tuesday's reading is 41 NEUTRAL. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. Higher score means more stress. The label did not move. Trade 41 as a pause, with the 10-year index at 5.244 percent, a December Brent settlement of 106.65 dollars, a November WTI settlement of 93.74 dollars, a strait that is not open, and a chip tape that got worse.
Data through the 12 Oct 2026 US stock close. The Treasury market was shut on Monday, so the yield input is Friday's cash close. VIX is Monday's close. This note is before Tuesday's US open.
