October 10, 2026 · Top 5 regime drivers, risk matrix, positioning
Score stays neutral. Do not buy the bond.NOT A FLIP. Score 39, same as the prior note. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. Friday did not clear the constraint. It added a diesel headline and a landfall that came after the oil settlement.
This is a weekend edition. Friday 9 Oct is the last completed US session. US cash markets are closed. A Saturday screen is not a new close. Oil rows below are Friday settlements unless labeled as a screen. A screen is not a settlement.

The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,811.54, up 46.18 points, or 0.59 percent. It missed Tuesday's record close of 7,818.93. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 27,366.17, up 172.83 points, or 0.64 percent. The Dow closed at 51,654.95, up 423.31 points, or 0.83 percent (AP, 9 Oct). For the week, the S&P rose 1.2 percent, the Dow rose 0.9 percent, the Nasdaq rose 0.6 percent, and the Russell 2000 fell 0.9 percent (AP, 9 Oct).
VIX closed at 14.84, down 0.57 points from Thursday's 15.41. Fear got cheaper on a day that was not an all-clear.
The 10-year yield index closed at 5.244 percent, up 1.3 basis points from Thursday's 5.231 percent. The 5-year yield index closed at 5.021 percent, up 3.0 basis points. The 30-year yield index closed at 5.600 percent, down 0.6 basis points. The 3-month yield index closed at 4.057 percent, up 1.4 basis points. The front end led the backup. The long end did not.
Brent futures settled Friday at 104.72 dollars, up 44 cents, or 0.42 percent, from Thursday's 104.28 dollar settlement. WTI settled at 91.85 dollars, up 36 cents, or 0.39 percent, from Thursday's 91.49 dollars (Reuters, 9 Oct). A December Brent screen printed 104.43 dollars. A November WTI screen printed 91.66 dollars. Those screens are not the settlements. Do not trade them as the close.
GLD closed at 384.58 dollars, up 1.57 percent from Thursday's 378.62 dollars. This note does not call a gold futures settlement.
The dollar index closed at 102.23, up 0.09 percent from Thursday's 102.14. That is not a squeeze, and it is not a collapse.
Signal. Friday's new policy fact is a Russia diesel deal. It did not show up as a lower crude settlement.
President Trump said Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel, about 2.25 million barrels, then another 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons after that. The US exports about 1.5 million barrels of diesel a day, so the first tranche is about a day and a half of that export flow (Reuters, 9 Oct). The Treasury issued a license allowing Russian diesel imports until 7 Apr (Reuters, 9 Oct). AP said sanctions will not apply until April 2027 on cargoes loaded as of Friday. Those are not the same sentence. Do not merge them into one date.
US diesel futures fell almost 5 percent after the news and were trading at 4.64 dollars a gallon (Reuters, 9 Oct). That is a screen, not a settlement. The US pump average was 6.28 dollars a gallon on Thursday, after a record 6.52 dollars on 22 Sep (AAA, via Reuters and AP). Futures and the pump are not the same price.
Analysts did not treat this as a fix. One called it a nothing burger, because Russia usually exports more diesel than this when its refineries are not under attack. Another called it another stream into a tight market, not a fix (Reuters, 9 Oct). A separate note said the price effect is probably not much, because barrels diverted to the US are barrels taken from someone else (AP, 9 Oct).
China also plans to resume refined fuel exports after a halt over the holiday (Reuters, 9 Oct, citing sources). That weighed on the crude tape. It is not a volume this note can call.
Crude still settled higher. Brent at 104.72 dollars and WTI at 91.85 dollars are the closes. The diesel screen is not a reason to mark crude down.
Macro Impact. Products got a headline. The crude constraint did not break. A day and a half of US diesel exports does not refill a market that has been tight since the Iran war. It also does not cancel a Gulf shut-in. A confirmed, repeated flow of Russian diesel would change the products weight. One announcement, with the crude settlement up, does not.
Positioning. Hold the core energy sleeve (USO, XOM, CVX). Do not sell it because diesel futures fell on a screen. Do not add it because crude settled up 44 cents. USO rose 0.4 percent yesterday, to 148.20 dollars. XOM rose 0.3 percent, to 168.94 dollars. CVX rose 0.2 percent, to 211.98 dollars. XLE fell 0.2 percent, to 65.08 dollars. Equities did not chase the settle. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL). Delta closed flat yesterday, at 82.17 dollars. A diesel headline is not jet fuel back to normal.

Signal. Friday's settlement is the oil close. Landfall came later. A Saturday damage headline is not a new settlement.
Brent settled at 104.72 dollars. WTI settled at 91.85 dollars. Both were up less than half a percent. The settle story was written while the storm was still approaching (Reuters, 9 Oct).
Landfall was near Destin, Florida, at 9:30 p.m. ET, as a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds and a central pressure of 971 millibars (National Hurricane Center, via the Guardian and Florida Public Radio, 9 Oct). A Reuters flash the same evening called it Category 3 and printed the same 105 mph winds. 105 mph is Category 2. Do not average the labels. Use the wind speed.
The shut-in rose before landfall. Producers had shut in about 1.5 million barrels a day of Gulf oil, nearly 72 percent of Gulf oil output, and 1.3 billion cubic feet a day of gas, 59 percent of Gulf gas (Marine Minerals Administration, via Reuters, 9 Oct). Thursday's figure was 1.3 million barrels a day, or 62.9 percent. Use the later official figure for Friday. Do not average the two days.
A consultant cut its estimate of disrupted Gulf oil from 9 million barrels to about 7.2 million as the path tracked east (Earth Science Associates, via Reuters, 9 Oct). That is a cumulative estimate, not a daily rate. About 500,000 barrels a day of refining capacity sit in the path, including Pascagoula (Energy Aspects, via Reuters, 9 Oct). That is exposure, not a confirmed outage.
Macro Impact. A higher shut-in plus a landfall after the settle is why you hold energy into Monday. A 44 cent Brent rise is why you do not add on the headline. The eastward path is why you do not treat this as a full Gulf wipeout. Monday's open is the first print after landfall. It is not in hand.
Positioning. Hold USO, XOM, and CVX. Do not add because the storm made landfall. Do not sell because the settle was only 44 cents. Do not trade a Saturday screen as Friday's close. Defense is not the expression. ITA rose 0.9 percent yesterday, to 206.65 dollars. That is not a war bid. Do not add it.

The Score Stayed Neutral. Stocks Rose. The Bond Did Not.Signal. Friday's cash session did not flip the regime. It also did not fund a bond buy.
The score is 39, unchanged. Fiscal pressure eased from 67 to 66. Central bank pressure rose from 55 to 58. Flow pressure fell from 20 to 17. Narrative stress stayed at 0. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for NEUTRAL runs from 30 to 44. This is inside the band, not on the line. It is not a flip.
The S&P rose 0.59 percent and still sits about 7 points under Tuesday's record. The Nasdaq rose 0.64 percent. The Dow rose 0.83 percent. VIX closed at 14.84. A bounce with cheaper fear is not a stress day. It is also not an all-clear into Wednesday's inflation print.
The yield backup was small, and it was in the front and the belly. The 10-year index is 5.244 percent. The 5-year index is 5.021 percent. TLT rose 0.1 percent yesterday, to 77.98 dollars. HYG rose 0.1 percent, to 77.23 dollars. LQD was flat, at 102.41 dollars. Credit did not crack. The long bond did not get a second auction day.
Macro Impact. A score of 39 means the CAUTION label stays off. It does not mean the constraint is gone. RISK-ON starts below 30. A 5.244 percent 10-year index is still restrictive. A hot CPI on Wednesday can put the prior high back in play. A cool CPI can extend Thursday's dip in yields. Neither print is in hand.
Positioning. Stay underweight long duration (TLT, IEF). Do not cover because TLT rose 0.1 percent. Do not add to the short because the 10-year index rose 1.3 basis points. That is noise, not a new entry. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. The 3-month yield index is 4.057 percent, just above the top of the 3.75 to 4 percent funds range. Keep financials small (XLF). XLF rose 0.9 percent yesterday, to 54.73 dollars. Bank results start Tuesday. That is not a reason to add duration.
Key Sources. AP close, 9 Oct, https://apnews.com/article/wall-street-stocks-dow-nasdaq-dafbd0c4037ee10e2a9e305f3cfa8e70 ; yield index close 9 Oct.
Signal. The Nasdaq rose. The chip complex did not. Thursday's revenue gap is still the fact. Friday did not erase it.
The semiconductor fund fell 0.6 percent yesterday, to 603.33 dollars. Nvidia fell 0.5 percent, to 229.28 dollars. AMD fell 2.0 percent, to 608.10 dollars. Micron fell 0.7 percent, to 1,029.00 dollars. Broadcom rose 0.4 percent, to 361.54 dollars. Microsoft rose 2.4 percent, to 535.07 dollars. Oracle rose 4.2 percent, to 141.40 dollars. The bounce was in a few software and platform names. It was not a chip bid.
The OpenAI revenue gap is still Thursday's news. September annualized revenue was near 50 billion dollars, not the nearly 70 billion dollar figure signaled earlier (Reuters, 8 Oct). Friday did not replace that print. Do not treat Microsoft's rise as a new revenue fact.
Macro Impact. A chip fund down 0.6 percent, with the Nasdaq up 0.6 percent and VIX at 14.84, is a split tape. It is not a crash, and it is not an invitation to buy Thursday's dip. The AI build is still competing with the Treasury for cash. CPI is Wednesday. Bank results start Tuesday. Chasing a 0.5 percent Nvidia dip into that window is how a 39 score becomes a higher score with the Nasdaq lower.
Positioning. Do not buy the Nasdaq dip. Do not short Nvidia because Friday was down 0.5 percent. That is not a crack in the business. Stay underweight high-beta semis (SMH). A starter in utilities is still the cleaner power expression. XLU rose 0.8 percent yesterday, to 41.41 dollars. Constellation rose 4.6 percent, to 298.07 dollars. That bounce gives back Thursday's drop. Do not chase it.
Key Sources. Friday closes, this run. Reuters OpenAI, 8 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/business/openais-annualized-revenue-20-billion-less-than-previously-signaled-ft-reports-2026-10-08/
Signal. China allocated real money on Friday. It is leftover quota, not a new bazooka. US households are still sour. Neither print is a US close for rates.
Beijing let provinces tap 550 billion yuan, about 82 billion dollars, in unused debt quotas. Of that, 300 billion yuan is for county and district operations. The rest funds infrastructure, especially projects already being built, and in stronger regions. This year's figure is larger than the year-end taps in 2024 and 2025. The growth target is 4.5 to 5 percent (Reuters, 9 Oct).
FXI rose 2.4 percent yesterday, to 34.24 dollars. EEM rose 1.1 percent, to 66.80 dollars. Those are US proxies. They are not a Shanghai close. This note does not call a Saturday Asia close.
US consumer sentiment fell to 46.3 in the early October read, from 48.1 in September. That is 1.8 points, the third straight monthly drop, and close to the May low. Current conditions fell to 44.7 from 50.9, a record low for that line. Year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7 percent from 4.6 percent. Five-year expectations rose to 3.5 percent from 3.4 percent (University of Michigan, 9 Oct; Reuters, 9 Oct). The director called the headline little changed. The current-conditions line was not.
There is no new CPI. September CPI is 14 Oct (Wed), at 08:30 ET (Bureau of Labor Statistics). October still looks like a skip. A cut is not priced. This note has no new odds percentage. Economists still look for a hike in December, not a cut (Reuters, 9 Oct).
Macro Impact. A 550 billion yuan quota tap can steady a local funding gap. It does not fund FXI as a US trade into CPI. Sentiment at 46.3, with inflation expectations up, keeps a December hike alive. A cool CPI can keep October as a skip. It does not cancel December by itself. Oil at a 104.72 dollar Brent settle keeps that hike in the story.
Positioning. Do not add China (FXI, EEM) because the quota was announced. Do not short it because sentiment is a US print. Do not add duration because households are sour. Cash still does the job until Wednesday. Staples were flat yesterday. XLP closed at 83.43 dollars. They are not a substitute for cash into the print.

| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX) | +2% | Hold it. Crude settled higher. The shut-in rose. The diesel deal is why you do not sell. The small settle is why you do not add |
| Power / utilities (XLU) | +1% | Hold the starter. XLU rose 0.8 percent yesterday. Own the power theme. Do not chase Constellation |
| Cash / short bills | High | The 10-year index is 5.244 percent. CPI is Wednesday. A 39 score is not a bond buy |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT, IEF) | −5% | The score did not flip. A 0.1 percent rise in TLT does not fund the long end |
| Semis / high-beta tech (SMH) | −2% | The chip fund fell 0.6 percent while the Nasdaq rose. Do not chase the dip. Do not short Nvidia |
| Small caps (IWM) | −2% | IWM rose 0.5 percent yesterday, to 278.94 dollars. One bounce does not fix the yield level |
| Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL) | −2% | A diesel headline and a flat Delta close are not jet fuel back to normal |
| China cyclicals (FXI, EEM) | −2% | The quota is real. FXI is a US proxy. Do not add into CPI |
| Defense (ITA, LMT) | 0% | A US storm is not a war bid. The no-strike pledge still runs to 3 Nov. Do not add |
| Gold (GLD) | 0% | Up 1.57 percent. No futures settlement in this note. Not a new entry |
| Staples (XLP) | 0% | Flat yesterday. Cash still does the job into CPI |
Cash stays high. The hold at 39 says leave the crash urgency off. It does not say buy duration, sell energy, or buy Friday's chip split. Trade 39 as a 5.244 percent 10-year, a Brent settle of 104.72 dollars, a diesel headline that did not break crude, and a landfall that is not yet in a settlement.
| Date | Event | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Oct (Sat) | Isaias inland after Friday's 9:30 p.m. ET landfall. Not a new oil settlement | High |
| 11 Oct (Sun) | Storm remnants still a weather story. Not a US close | Medium |
| 12 Oct (Mon) | Columbus Day. Bond market usually shut. Stocks usually open. First oil print after landfall | High |
| 13 Oct (Tue) | JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and UnitedHealth results, before the US open | High |
| 14 Oct (Wed) | September CPI, 08:30 ET. September real earnings, 08:30 ET. Bank of America results, before the US open | High |
| 15 Oct (Thu) | September producer prices, 08:30 ET | Medium |
| 16 Oct (Fri) | September import and export prices, 08:30 ET | Medium |
| 23 Oct (Fri) | Final October consumer sentiment, 10:00 ET | Low |
| 27 to 28 Oct (Tue to Wed) | Next policy meeting. October still looks like a skip. No new odds percentage in this note | High |
| 29 Oct (Thu) | Amazon results, as scheduled | Medium |
| 3 Nov (Tue) | US midterms. The diesel deal and the no-strike pledge both point at this date. Neither is a ceasefire | High |
| 8 to 9 Dec (Tue to Wed) | Following policy meeting. A cut is not the base case in this note | High |
The Fed hiked to a range of 3.75 to 4 percent on 16 Sep (Wed). Weekdays above match the calendar. September CPI, producer prices, and import prices are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics October schedule. Nvidia's next results are 17 Nov (Tue). That is outside this window. Delta already reported on 9 Oct (Fri).
| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 66 | 10Y at 5.24% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 58 | 5Y at 4.97% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 17 | VIX 14.8 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 0 | SPY +0.5%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth -23 |
| Composite | 39 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 14.84, 10Y at 5.24%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
This is not a flip. The prior close reading was 39 NEUTRAL. Friday's close is 39 NEUTRAL. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. Higher score means more stress. The mix shifted. Central bank pressure rose. Flow pressure fell. The label did not. Trade 39 as a pause, with the 10-year index at 5.244 percent, a Brent settle of 104.72 dollars, and a Strait that is still not open.
Data through the 9 Oct 2026 US close. Saturday note. US cash markets are closed. The score uses Friday's close. It is not a Saturday close.
