Score flipped back to neutral. Do not buy the bond.REGIME FLIP. CAUTION back to NEUTRAL. Score 39, down from 45. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. This is a bond auction, not an all-clear.
Thursday 8 Oct is the last completed US session. It is early Friday in Stockholm. Europe has not opened. Asia is in Friday's session. Korea and Taiwan are shut today. Oil rows below are Thursday settlements unless labeled as a screen. A screen is not a settlement. A Friday futures print is not Thursday's close.

The S&P 500 closed Thursday at 7,765.36, down 36.41 points, or 0.47 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 27,193.34, down 345.35 points, or 1.25 percent. The Dow closed at 51,231.64, up 51.77 points, or 0.10 percent (Reuters, 8 Oct).
VIX closed at 15.41, up 0.33 points from Wednesday's 15.08. Fear is still cheap.
The 10-year yield index closed at 5.231 percent, down 4.6 basis points from Wednesday's 5.277 percent. In afternoon cash trade the 10-year yield was down 5 basis points, to 5.227 percent (Reuters, 8 Oct). The 5-year yield index closed at 4.991 percent, down 3.0 basis points. The 30-year yield index closed at 5.606 percent, down 5.5 basis points. Cash 30-year yields were down 5.9 basis points, to 5.602 percent. The 2-year cash yield fell 1.3 basis points, to 4.751 percent. The 3-month yield index was 4.043 percent. The long end rallied. The front end barely moved.
Brent futures settled Thursday at 104.28 dollars, up 4.08 dollars, or 4.1 percent, from Wednesday's 100.20 dollar settlement. WTI settled at 91.49 dollars, up 3.21 dollars, or 3.6 percent, from Wednesday's 88.28 dollars (Reuters energy, 8 Oct; the same levels are in the CNBC close). A bond wrap the same day printed 103.92 dollars and 91.17 dollars. That is not the settlement. A Friday screen at 02:20 GMT had Brent at 103.53 dollars and WTI at 90.97 dollars (Reuters, 9 Oct). That screen lines up with the 104.28 and 91.49 settlements. It is not a new close.
GLD closed at 378.62 dollars, up 0.7 percent from Wednesday's 375.88 dollars. A Friday spot screen was up 0.9 percent, to 4,169.32 dollars (Reuters, 9 Oct). That screen is not a settlement. This note does not call a gold futures settlement.
The dollar index closed at 102.02, down 0.2 percent from Wednesday's 102.24. A Friday note had the euro near 1.122 (Reuters, 9 Oct). That is a screen, not a cash close.
The Score Flipped Back. The Auction Did It. Stocks Did Not.Signal. Thursday's cash session is the new regime. It is a flip from CAUTION back to NEUTRAL. It is not a flip to a rally.
The score is 39, down from 45 on Wednesday's close. Fiscal pressure fell from 80 to 67. Central bank pressure fell from 58 to 55. Flow pressure fell from 23 to 20. Narrative stress fell from 2 to 0. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for NEUTRAL runs from 30 to 44. This is inside the band, not on the line.
The reset is the long end. The Treasury sold 30-year bonds into a strong bid. The issue priced at 5.618 percent, below the expected rate at the bid deadline. The bid-to-cover ratio was 2.54, above the six-auction average of 2.41. Indirect bids took 72.3 percent of the supply, above the 69.1 percent average (Reuters, 8 Oct). Demand showed up. It did not fund a bond bull market. The cash 10-year is still 5.227 percent. Wednesday's cash high was 5.364 percent.
The curve flattened. The gap between the 2-year and the 10-year narrowed to 47.1 basis points from 51.4. Earlier in the session it touched 54.2 basis points (Reuters, 8 Oct). That is a pause in the bear steepener. It is not a growth scare.
TLT closed at 77.87 dollars, up 0.9 percent. HYG closed at 77.14 dollars, flat. LQD closed at 102.47 dollars, up 0.4 percent. Credit did not crack. The long bond got a one-day bid.
Macro Impact. A score of 39 means the CAUTION label is off. It does not mean the constraint is gone. RISK-ON starts below 30. The 10-year yield index is still in a multi-decade high neighborhood. The auction stopped the bleed for a day. A hot CPI next week can put Wednesday's high back in play. A cool CPI can extend the dip. Neither print is in hand.
Positioning. Stay underweight long duration (TLT, IEF). Do not cover because the auction was strong. Do not add to the short because TLT rose 0.9 percent. That rally is the auction, not a new entry. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. The 3-month yield index is 4.043 percent, just above the top of the 3.75 to 4 percent funds range. Keep financials small (XLF). XLF rose 0.9 percent, to 54.23 dollars. A later hike helps interest income. A 5.60 percent long bond still hurts the bond book.

Signal. Thursday's settlement is the oil close. A Friday screen that is a bit lower does not replace it. A pledge not to strike before the election does not reopen the Strait.
Brent settled at 104.28 dollars. WTI settled at 91.49 dollars. Both contracts were up more than 5 dollars at one point, then came off the highs after President Trump said the United States will not attack Iran before the 3 Nov midterms, and that talks are productive (Reuters, 8 Oct). Prices still closed up 4.1 percent and 3.6 percent. USO rose 2.5 percent, to 147.58 dollars. XLE rose 3.0 percent, to 65.24 dollars. Equities treated Thursday as a supply day, not a glut.
The pledge is a date, not a ceasefire. Trump rejected Tehran's latest offer. Iran's foreign minister said Tehran is reviewing a US response to a proposal that would reopen the Strait within seven days, and would reply within days (Tasnim, via Reuters, 8 Oct). The same day the Treasury sanctioned individuals, networks, and 17 vessels moving Iranian crude and products (Reuters, 8 Oct). Iran has also said it will not abandon enrichment (state media, via Reuters, 8 Oct).
The waterway is still tight. Seven commodity vessels passed the Strait on Tuesday, the lowest since 23 Jul, Kpler said. LSEG counted eight that day. Wednesday's tally was 10, still well short of more than 20 on Sunday and Monday (Reuters, 8 Oct). Kpler said crude crossing the Strait fell 27 percent from a wartime high, to at least 10.1 million barrels a day, which is 74 percent of the pre-war level. A separate note had about 9.5 million barrels a day exiting in the week ended Tuesday (CNBC, 8 Oct). Those are not the same window. Do not average them.
The attack counts still do not match. Kpler counted 10 tankers struck from 28 Sep to 4 Oct. A Wednesday security count had at least 12 attacks in the week to 5 Oct. A UN count for that week was nine. The lists are not the same.
The storm is a cut, not a watch. Gulf producers had shut in about 1.3 million barrels a day, or 62.9 percent of current Gulf oil output, as of Thursday (US Marine Minerals Administration, via Reuters, 8 Oct and 9 Oct). An earlier note had a smaller shut-in. The later official figure is the one to use. Hurricane Isaias was still approaching early Friday. It had not made landfall in the 02:20 GMT note (Reuters, 9 Oct).
Macro Impact. A higher settle plus a record run of attacks is why you hold energy. A no-strike pledge into the election is why you do not add on the headline. The Friday screen is why you do not trade the overnight print as a close. Products are still the tight leg. A confirmed reopen of the Strait, or a confirmed landfall that lasts, would change the weight. Neither is in hand.
Positioning. Hold the core energy sleeve (USO, XOM, CVX). Do not add because the settle was up 4 percent. Do not sell because the Friday screen is 72 cents lower. XOM rose 2.7 percent, to 168.50 dollars. CVX rose 3.1 percent, to 211.55 dollars. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL). Delta fell 1.0 percent, to 82.14 dollars. A higher crude settle is not an all-clear for jet fuel.

Signal. The Nasdaq's record is two days old. Thursday took it further off the high. The new fact is a smaller AI revenue print, not a growth scare in the broad tape.
The S&P fell 0.47 percent. The Nasdaq fell 1.25 percent. The Dow rose 0.10 percent. On the New York Stock Exchange, advancing issues beat decliners by 1.28 to 1. On the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers by 1.33 to 1 (Reuters, 8 Oct). That is a chip day, not a crash. The S&P is still up 1.3 percent from 1 Oct.
The semiconductor index fell 3.4 percent, to 12,623.71. SMH fell 2.8 percent, to 607.27 dollars. Nvidia fell 2.9 percent, to 230.48 dollars. AMD fell 3.9 percent, to 620.68 dollars. Broadcom fell 4.4 percent, to 360.14 dollars. Oracle fell 5.5 percent, to 135.69 dollars. Micron fell 4.8 percent, to 1,035.84 dollars. Microsoft fell 1.3 percent, to 522.61 dollars. The catalyst was a report that OpenAI's September annualized revenue was almost 50 billion dollars, not the nearly 70 billion dollar figure signaled earlier. The gap is mostly partner revenue that the earlier figure included. The Financial Times was first. Reuters confirmed the lower figure with its own source (Reuters, 8 Oct; CNBC, 8 Oct).
The borrowing story did not go away. SpaceX, Broadcom, and Oracle are still expected to raise billions for chips (Reuters, 9 Oct). Australia's Firmus, a data centre operator backed by Nvidia, shelved a 5 billion dollar listing and said it would raise in private instead (Reuters, 8 Oct). That is supply. It is not a new US close for those bonds.
PepsiCo rose 3.7 percent, to 128.34 dollars, after it cut its annual profit forecast and said it would cut more cost (Reuters, 8 Oct). Staples worked. XLP rose 2.1 percent, to 83.42 dollars. That is not a reason to buy the Nasdaq.
Earnings for the big banks start next week. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and UnitedHealth are due 13 Oct (Tue), before the US open. Bank of America is due 14 Oct (Wed), before the US open. Amazon is due 29 Oct (Thu). Nvidia's next results are 17 Nov (Tue). That is not next week.
Macro Impact. A chip index down 3.4 percent with VIX at 15.41 is a valuation and supply tape, not a fear tape. The AI build is still competing with the Treasury for cash. A strong 30-year auction and a weak chip day can happen together. Chasing Thursday's dip into CPI is how a 39 score becomes a higher score with the Nasdaq lower.
Positioning. Do not buy the Nasdaq dip. Do not short Nvidia because the close was down 2.9 percent. That is not a crack in the business. It is a one-day de-rate. Stay underweight high-beta semis (SMH). A starter in utilities is still the cleaner power expression than chasing a single name. XLU closed at 41.07 dollars, down 0.2 percent. Constellation fell 4.8 percent, to 285.07 dollars. Do not add CEG.

Signal. The minutes are already in the price. Thursday added a voice, not a new vote.
Fed Governor Christopher Waller said more hikes will likely be needed to get inflation back to 2 percent, and that the hikes do not need to come at back-to-back meetings. He left the door open for a pause on 27 to 28 Oct (Reuters, 8 Oct). St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said more hikes will be needed and did not give a date (Reuters, 8 Oct).
The cash close story put the chance of a December hike at 69.2 percent, and said markets expect no change this month (CME FedWatch, via Reuters, 8 Oct). A later note had an October hike at 18 percent and a December hike at 82 percent (CME, via Reuters, 9 Oct). Those are not the same print. Use 69.2 percent as the Thursday close. The later read is a screen.
There is no new CPI. September payrolls were already in the price. Payroll employment rose 29,000 in September, and the unemployment rate was 4.2 percent (BLS). September CPI is 14 Oct (Wed), at 08:30 ET.
Macro Impact. A skip in October does not fund a 5.231 percent 10-year. Most of the committee still wanted another hike before the year is over, as of the September minutes. Oil at a 104.28 dollar Brent settle keeps that hike alive. A cool CPI can keep October as a skip. It does not cancel December by itself.
Positioning. Do not add duration because October looks like a skip. Do not sell equities just because Waller still wants more hikes. The cash close already priced a likely skip. Cash still does the job until CPI. Staples worked on Thursday. They are not a substitute for cash into the print.
Key Sources. Reuters Waller, 8 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/world/feds-waller-more-hikes-needed-there-is-flexibility-about-pace-2026-10-08/ ; Reuters close, 8 Oct ; Reuters gold note, 9 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/world/india/gold-rises-softer-dollar-easing-yields-fed-outlook-focus-2026-10-09/
Signal. China printed a real close on Thursday. It was down. Friday's first hours are not a new close. Korea and Taiwan are shut today.
Thursday's finished closes stand. The Nikkei closed at 69,042.11, down 1.4 percent. The Kospi closed at 6,625.93, down 2.6 percent. The Hang Seng closed at 23,785.79, down 1.4 percent. Shanghai closed at 3,811.90, down 0.8 percent from the 30 Sep close of 3,842.20. That was the first session after the holiday. It did not gap down. It also did not confirm a bid.
Friday is a screen. A Singapore wrap had Asian stocks lower, the Nikkei down more than 1 percent at the time of that note, and Korea and Taiwan closed for a holiday (Reuters, 9 Oct). Those Friday prints are not cash closes. Brent in that same hour was a screen near 103.70 dollars. The later 02:20 GMT screen was 103.53 dollars. Neither replaces Thursday's 104.28 dollar settlement.
Europe's stress is still in the bond, not in a new US print. The Friday wrap kept the focus on French spreads into the 2027 election (Reuters, 9 Oct). That does not fund TLT.
Macro Impact. Korea down 2.6 percent on Thursday, while the Nasdaq was down 1.25 percent, is the same split as the day before. It is a reason not to add high-beta semis before CPI. FXI was flat on Thursday, at 33.45 dollars. EEM fell 1.9 percent, to 66.10 dollars. Those are US proxies. They are not the Shanghai close. Shanghai's close was the 0.8 percent dip from 30 Sep.
Positioning. Do not add China (FXI, EEM) on a Friday screen. Do not short the Nasdaq because Seoul was heavy. That is a different market, and Friday's print is not a close. Defense got a small bid, not a war bid. ITA rose 0.6 percent, to 204.88 dollars. Lockheed rose 1.7 percent, to 507.89 dollars. Attacks continued. The no-strike pledge is why you do not chase defense. Do not add it.

| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX) | +2% | Hold it. Thursday settled higher on attacks and a real Gulf shut-in. The no-strike pledge is why you do not add. The Friday screen is why you do not sell |
| Power / utilities (XLU) | +1% | Hold the starter. XLU was down 0.2 percent. Own the power theme. Do not chase Constellation |
| Cash / short bills | High | The 10-year index is 5.231 percent. CPI is next week. The auction was a pause, not a new bull market |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT, IEF) | −5% | The flip back is not a bond buy. A strong 30-year auction and a 0.9 percent TLT rise do not fund the long end |
| Semis / high-beta tech (SMH) | −2% | The chip index fell 3.4 percent. Nvidia fell 2.9 percent. Do not chase the dip. Do not short Nvidia |
| Small caps (IWM) | −2% | IWM was flat. The yield dip did not fix that. Do not add to the short on a flat day |
| Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL) | −2% | A higher crude settle is not jet fuel back to normal. Delta fell 1.0 percent |
| China cyclicals (FXI, EEM) | −2% | Shanghai's first close was down 0.8 percent from 30 Sep. FXI is not Shanghai. Friday is not a close |
| Defense (ITA, LMT) | 0% | A small bid, not a paid war bid. The pledge is a date. Do not add |
| Gold (GLD) | 0% | Up 0.7 percent with yields down. That is rates, not a flight. No futures settlement in this note |
| Staples (XLP) | 0% | They worked. XLP rose 2.1 percent. Cash still does the job into CPI |
Cash stays high. The flip says take the crash urgency off. It does not say buy duration or sell energy. Do not buy Thursday's chip dip. Trade 39 as a 5.231 percent 10-year, a Brent settle of 104.28 dollars, a narrow chip tape, and a Strait that is still not open.
| Date | Event | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| 9 Oct (Fri) | Hurricane Isaias still approaching as of the 02:20 GMT note. Korea and Taiwan shut | High |
| 10 Oct (Sat) | Storm window if landfall slips. Not a confirmed hit | Medium |
| 12 Oct (Mon) | Columbus Day. No BLS release. The bond market is usually shut. Stocks are usually open | Low |
| 13 Oct (Tue) | JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and UnitedHealth results, before the US open | High |
| 14 Oct (Wed) | September CPI, 08:30 ET. Bank of America results, before the US open | High |
| 15 Oct (Thu) | September producer prices, 08:30 ET | Medium |
| 16 Oct (Fri) | September import and export prices, 08:30 ET | Medium |
| 27 to 28 Oct (Tue to Wed) | Next policy meeting. October still looks like a skip. A later read had the hike at 18 percent | High |
| 29 Oct (Thu) | Samsung detailed results, as scheduled. Amazon results | Medium |
| 3 Nov (Tue) | US midterms. The no-strike pledge runs to this date. It is not a ceasefire | High |
| 8 to 9 Dec (Tue to Wed) | Following policy meeting. Thursday's close story had a December hike at 69.2 percent | High |
The Fed hiked to a range of 3.75 to 4 percent on 16 Sep (Wed). Weekdays above match the calendar. September CPI, producer prices, and import prices are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics October schedule. Bank dates are from the company calendars. Nvidia's next results are 17 Nov (Tue). That is outside this window. PepsiCo already reported on 8 Oct (Thu).
| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 67 | 10Y at 5.23% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 55 | 5Y at 4.96% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 20 | VIX 15.4 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 0 | SPY +0.6%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth -16 |
| Composite | 39 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 15.41, 10Y at 5.23%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
This is a flip. Wednesday's close was 45 CAUTION. Thursday's close is 39 NEUTRAL. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. Higher score means more stress. The flip is the long bond finding a bid, with the fear gauge still low. It is not a new bond bull market, and it is not an equity bid. Trade 39 as a pause, with the 10-year index at 5.231 percent and the Strait still not open.
Data through the 8 Oct 2026 US close. Friday note before the Europe open. Asia is in Friday's session. Korea and Taiwan are shut. The score uses Thursday's close. It is not a Friday close.
