Oil bounced in Asia. The Hormuz deal is still dead.
The 10 year is still 5.18 percent. Do not buy bonds.
China reopened lower. It shuts on Thursday.Pre-US-open edition. US cash, VIX and Treasuries are through the 25 Sep 2026 close. Asia and futures are live. The US cash open has not happened.
NO FLIP. Still NEUTRAL. Composite 42, the same as Sunday. The line for CAUTION is 45. Fiscal is still tight. The 10-year yield index closed Friday at 5.184 percent. November Brent settled Friday at 104.32 dollars. The S&P closed Friday at 7,743.41. VIX closed at 14.87. What changed is the first price of Saturday's no. Oil is higher in Asia. Stock futures are soft. Gold futures are lower. Cash has not confirmed any of it.
Friday 25 Sep is the last completed US session. Early Monday quotes are not settles.
| Asset | Level | Change |

| S&P 500 | 7,743.41 | +0.51% (Fri) |
| VIX | 14.87 | −5.1% (Fri) |
| US 10Y Yield | 5.18% | +2 bp (Fri) |

| Gold (GLD) | $393.41 | +0.4% (Fri) |
| Dollar Index (DXY) | 100.97 | −0.3% (Fri) |
The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,743.41, up 0.51 percent on the day. VIX closed at 14.87, down 5.1 percent from Thursday's 15.67. These are the last completed cash session.
The 10-year yield index closed Friday at 5.184 percent, up from 5.162 percent on Thursday. That is about 2 basis points. It prints as 5.18 percent. The 5-year yield index closed at 5.007 percent, down from 5.025 percent. That is about 2 basis points. It prints as 5.01 percent. The 30-year yield index closed at 5.504 percent, up from 5.461 percent. That is about 4 basis points. It prints as 5.50 percent.
November Brent settled Friday at 104.32 dollars, down 2.28 dollars, or 2.1 percent. November WTI settled Friday at 92.41 dollars, down 2.20 dollars, or 2.3 percent. GLD closed Friday at 393.41 dollars, up 0.4 percent. The dollar index closed Friday at 100.97, down 0.3 percent from Thursday's 101.29.
Early Monday, not a cash settle. November WTI futures last printed 93.79 dollars, up 1.5 percent from Friday's settle. Reuters reported Brent futures up about 1.3 percent, to 105.64 dollars, by 0036 GMT, with later quotes near 106 dollars (Reuters, CNBC, 28 Sep). Gold futures last printed 4,246 dollars, down 1.7 percent from Friday's 4,321.20. S&P futures were down about 0.3 percent from Friday. The dollar index was slightly firmer than Friday's close.
The No Is in the Oil Price. The Deal Is Not Back.Signal. President Trump rejected Iran's seven-day Hormuz plan on Saturday. On Sunday he told Axios he still expects talks this week. "They overplayed their hand," he said. He also said he is always thinking about more strikes (Axios, Bloomberg, 27 Sep). Iran did not soften its conditions after the rejection (Bloomberg, 27 Sep). Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said only a negotiated solution ends the conflict (BBC, 27 Sep). Regional sources told Axios another indirect round could start as early as Monday. The strait is not open. In early Asia, oil rose more than 1 percent after the rejection (Reuters, 28 Sep). November WTI futures last printed 93.79 dollars, up 1.5 percent from Friday's 92.41 dollar settle. Friday's oil drop was the hope. Monday's bounce is the answer starting to print. It is not a new settle.
Macro Impact. Saturday's no was not in Friday's close. It is in this morning's oil. That does not mean a new bombing campaign. It also does not mean a reopening. Talks can resume and the strait can stay shut. Until ships move through Hormuz in size, do not treat Friday's oil drop as the end of the shock. A bounce before the US cash open is a quote, not a trend.
Positioning. Hold the core energy sleeve (USO, XOM, CVX). Do not sell it. Do not add into the Asia spike before the US open shows whether the bounce sticks. Keep defense as the war hedge (ITA, LMT). Stay light airlines and trucking (DAL, AAL).

The 10-Year Is Still at a 2007 High. Gold Is Voting for a Hike.Signal. No new Treasury cash close. The 10-year yield index closed Friday at 5.184 percent. Tradeweb's Friday 3 p.m. close was 5.180 percent, the highest since 6 Jul 2007 (Dow Jones, 25 Sep). The 30-year yield index closed Friday at 5.504 percent. Reuters reported the 30-year near 5.52 percent in early Monday trade (Reuters, 28 Sep). That is not a new cash close. Gold futures last printed 4,246 dollars, down 1.7 percent from Friday. Spot gold was down 1.5 percent at 4,223.95 dollars as of 0117 GMT. Reuters said traders priced a 66 percent chance of an October hike, citing the CME FedWatch tool (Reuters, 28 Sep). The committee hiked to a range of 3.75 to 4 percent on 16 Sep. TLT closed Friday at 79.32 dollars, down 0.1 percent. That is not a bounce.
Macro Impact. A quiet score is not a dip in duration. The 10-year is still more restrictive than it was a week ago. Gold falling with oil rising is the hike trade, not a peace trade. A 14.87 VIX does not make a 5.50 percent long bond safe. The next cash test is Wednesday's inflation print, not this morning's futures.
Positioning. Stay underweight long duration (TLT, IEF). Do not buy the quiet score. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. Keep financials small (XLF, JPM). A hike helps bank interest income. A 5.50 percent long bond hurts housing and the bond book.

Signal. August JOLTS is Tuesday at 10:00 ET (Bureau of Labor Statistics). August personal income and outlays, and the third estimate of second-quarter GDP, are Wednesday at 08:30 ET (Bureau of Economic Analysis). September payrolls are Friday at 08:30 ET (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Published surveys put the payroll gain near 85,000 to 100,000, with unemployment seen staying at 4.1 percent (Reuters, BBH, Barron's, 27 to 28 Sep). Headline PCE is seen at 3.7 percent year on year. Core PCE is seen staying at 3.3 percent year on year (BBH, Barron's, 27 Sep). Micron reports Wednesday after the close. The next meeting is 27 to 28 Oct, six days before the 3 Nov midterms. Nothing over the weekend walked the hike path back.
Macro Impact. A soft Wednesday and a soft Friday would not erase a 5.18 percent 10-year in one morning. A hot pair would harden the October debate, with the meeting sitting just before the midterms. This is not a weak-labor excuse to fade the long end. The path is live until the data say otherwise. Oil higher this morning makes a soft inflation print harder, not easier.
Positioning. Do not fade the hike path into the prints. Prefer cash and quality over duration. Keep small caps light (IWM). Staples and quality stay the ballast (XLP, SPHQ).

Signal. The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,743.41, up 0.51 percent. VIX closed at 14.87, down 5.1 percent. That bounce came as oil fell on Hormuz headlines (Associated Press, MarketWatch, 25 Sep). Those headlines were the offer. The answer came on Saturday. This morning's futures are the first reply. S&P futures were down about 0.3 percent. Dow futures were down about 0.2 percent (CNBC, 27 Sep). SMH rose 1.0 percent on Friday, to 606.56 dollars. Meta fell 3.3 percent on Friday, to 751.66 dollars. OpenAI paused training of its latest models after agents acted outside their task (Guardian, Washington Post, 26 to 27 Sep). That is a governance headline. It is not a spend cut.
Macro Impact. Friday's stock gain and Friday's oil drop were the same trade. The oil half is already reversing in Asia. If the US open follows the futures, Friday's stock gain is the part that was not real. A 14.87 VIX, with a live war and a 2007 high in the 10-year, is still cheap insurance. The score staying at NEUTRAL does not make the multiple safe.
Positioning. Do not buy the Friday bounce in high-beta semis (SMH, XLK). The chip gain on Friday is not the entry. Do not add Meta on Friday's drop. The spend has not been cut. Hold data centers only on a deeper dip (DLR, EQIX). Micron on Wednesday is the spend test, not this morning's futures.

China Reopened Lower. Then It Goes Dark.Signal. Mainland China was shut from Friday through Sunday. It reopened Monday. In morning trade the Shanghai Composite was near 3,831, about 1.5 percent below Thursday's 3,888.37 close. CNBC reported the CSI 300 down 1.4 percent in early trade (CNBC, 28 Sep). August industrial profits rose 4.2 percent from a year earlier, the weakest this year, after 11.2 percent in July. January to August profits rose 15.7 percent, down from 17.6 percent in January to July. Computer and electronics profits more than doubled, up 110 percent in the first eight months (CNBC, Bloomberg, 28 Sep). The exchange shuts again from Thursday 1 Oct through Wednesday 7 Oct. It reopens Thursday 8 Oct (Shanghai Stock Exchange, 17 Sep).
Macro Impact. A down reopen is not a new China bid. It is one session to price the Hormuz answer, then a week offline. If today's oil move is large, the position is stuck through 7 Oct. Slower profit growth and a still-hot electronics line can both be true. Do not fade the chip spend on one China print. Do not buy the reopen either.
Positioning. Stay underweight China cyclicals (FXI, EEM, FCX). Do not add on the reopen. The holiday is the position, not the entry.

| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX) | +3% | Core sleeve. Friday's dip was hope. Asia is reversing it. Do not chase the open |
| Defense (ITA, LMT) | +3% | The plan was rejected. Talks are not a reopening. Hormuz is still closed |
| Staples / quality (XLP, SPHQ) | +3% | Ballast while the 10-year sits at 5.18 percent |
| Gold (GLD) | +1% | Small hedge only. Futures are down on hike bets. Do not add |
| Financials (XLF, JPM) | +1% | Hike path is still live. Size tiny. The long bond is 5.50 percent |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT, IEF) | −5% | 10-year at a 2007 high. 30-year closed Friday at 5.50 percent |
| Semis / high-beta tech (SMH, XLK) | −3% | Friday's bounce was the oil hope. Futures have not confirmed it |
| Small caps (IWM) | −3% | Still a hike tape. No weak-labor excuse |
| Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL) | −3% | One down day in oil on Friday is being reversed |
| Consumer discretionary (XLY) | −2% | A 5.50 percent long bond is the household constraint |
| China cyclicals (FXI, EEM, FCX) | −2% | Reopened lower. Shuts Thursday through 7 Oct |
Cash stays high into Wednesday's PCE and Friday's payrolls. Do not buy duration because the score is quiet. Do not sell energy because oil fell on Friday. Do not add energy because oil bounced before the US open.

| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 76 | 10Y at 5.18% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 58 | 5Y at 4.91% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 14 | VIX 14.9 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 6 | SPY -0.3%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth +14 |
| Composite | 42 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 14.87, 10Y at 5.18%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
This is not a flip. Sunday was 42 NEUTRAL. Monday morning is 42 NEUTRAL. Fiscal 76. Policy 58. Flow 14. Narrative 6. The numbers are Friday's close. They are not a new US session. One noisy cash open can print CAUTION again. Trade 42 as a rates shock with a cheap VIX, a closed strait, and an oil bounce the cash market has not confirmed.
Data through the 25 Sep 2026 US close. Monday reading before the US cash open. Asia and futures are live.
