September 16, 2026 · Top 5 regime drivers, risk matrix, positioning
The Fed decides today. A hike looks likely.
US hit Iranian boats. Hormuz stays shut.
Stocks fell. The 10 year yield hit 5 percent.Wednesday FOMC-morning edition — US cash, VIX, Treasuries, oil, gold and the dollar are through the 15 Sep 2026 close. The statement, SEP and press conference land this afternoon. Retail sales print this morning.
No scorecard flip. Composite 44, NEUTRAL, up 2 points from Tuesday. That is the last print before Caution. Stocks faded again. The 10-year yield printed 5.00 percent. Oil settled at a fresh multi-month high. Do not read 44 as all-clear into 2 p.m. Eastern.
| Asset | Level | Change |

| S&P 500 | 7,585.73 | -0.45% (Tue) |

| US 10Y Yield | 5.00% | +4 bp (Tue) |

The Dow closed Tuesday at 52,093, down 0.63 percent. The Nasdaq closed Tuesday at 25,982, down 0.78 percent. Energy was the bid. Almost everything else was not.
The Fed Decides Today. A Hike Looks Likely.Signal. The FOMC releases its decision, SEP and dot plot today at 2 p.m. Eastern. Chair Warsh speaks at 2:30 p.m. (Federal Reserve calendar). Policy is still 3.50 to 3.75 percent. Futures priced a 92.5 percent chance of a quarter-point hike on Tuesday afternoon, to 3.75 to 4.00 percent (CME FedWatch via Fox Business, 15 Sep). That would be the first hike under Warsh (Reuters, 14 Sep). August retail sales print at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, before the statement (Census Bureau).
Macro Impact. The hike is not the surprise. The dots are. Oil settled above 108 dollars. Diesel made another record. A one-and-done tone would let duration and quality catch a bid. A hawkish set of dots would hit high-beta tech again and could push the scorecard into Caution in one session.
Positioning. Stay light duration into the statement. TLT fell 0.27 percent yesterday. That is not a buy. Prefer staples over Nasdaq beta until the press conference is done. If the Fed hikes and sounds done, cover some underweights. If the dots show more, add to TLT shorts and keep SMH light.

Signal. Brent settled at 108.16 dollars yesterday, up 2.3 percent from Monday. WTI settled at 104.84 dollars yesterday, up 3.4 percent from Monday. Both were the highest closes since 19 May (LSEG via Nation Thailand, 16 Sep). Brent is up 10 percent this week. WTI is up 13 percent this week. Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline remains shut after last week’s drone hits. Loadings at Yanbu were suspended (Reuters, 15 to 16 Sep). Traders still say the outage threatens up to 4 percent of global supply if the line stays down (Reuters, 15 Sep). US Energy Secretary Wright said flow could resume in days. Other sources said weeks (Reuters, AP, 15 Sep).
Macro Impact. Hormuz is the front door. The East-West line was the bypass. Both stay impaired into the Fed. Physical cargoes in Europe traded above 130 dollars yesterday. That is the inflation print Warsh takes into the SEP. Do not fade crude into the statement.
Positioning. Hold USO, XOM, CVX. Own the barrel first. USO rose 3.3 percent yesterday. XLE rose 2.2 percent yesterday. XOM rose 2.6 percent yesterday. CVX rose 2.6 percent yesterday. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL). DAL fell 1.1 percent yesterday. AAL fell 2.5 percent yesterday.
Key Sources. Market closes 15 Sep (Brent, WTI); Reuters 15 to 16 Sep; Nation Thailand 16 Sep.
The US Hit Iranian Boats. The Strait Stays Shut.Signal. US forces destroyed two Iranian small boats on Monday after an attempt to seize a Navy surface drone in the Strait of Hormuz, CENTCOM confirmed on Tuesday (Axios, Stars and Stripes, 15 Sep). Iran said it downed another US drone over Hormuz. CENTCOM has not confirmed that claim (IRNA, CNBC, 14 to 15 Sep). Gulf-Iran talks remain postponed. Traffic through the strait is still a fraction of the pre-war flow.
Macro Impact. This is not a ceasefire tape. It is another tactical clash on the same chokepoint. Insurers and owners will not send more steel through a mined or missile-struck strait. Fade any leftover “deal” headline into the Fed.
Positioning. Keep the energy overweight (USO, XOM, CVX). Keep a small defense sleeve (ITA, LMT). Lockheed rose 0.77 percent yesterday. ITA fell 1.2 percent yesterday. Own the barrel first. The equity hedge is second.

Stocks Fell Again. The 10-Year Yield Hit 5 Percent.Signal. The S&P 500 fell 0.45 percent yesterday to 7,585.73. The Nasdaq fell 0.78 percent. The Dow fell 0.63 percent. The 10-year yield rose to 5.00 percent yesterday. The 5-year yield rose to 4.83 percent. VIX closed at 17.20, up 0.58 percent yesterday. Nvidia rose 0.57 percent yesterday to 212.17 dollars, but it is still down 5.9 percent this week. AMD rose 2.2 percent yesterday. Broadcom fell 1.6 percent yesterday. Oracle fell 3.1 percent yesterday. Small caps (IWM) fell 0.70 percent yesterday.
Macro Impact. Equities are fading into a live hike with oil above 108 dollars and the 10-year at 5 percent. A 17-handle VIX is still complacent into a Warsh press conference. The scorecard sits at 44 because narrative stayed orderly, not because vol or yields eased. One hawkish SEP can flip Caution on.
Positioning. Do not sell vol at 17 into 16 Sep. Prefer staples (XLP) over high-beta tech (XLK, SMH). XLP fell 0.82 percent yesterday. That bid is tired, not cancelled. Do not buy Nvidia on a 0.6 percent bounce until the statement is out. Stay light IWM, XLY, DAL, AAL.
Key Sources. Market closes 15 Sep.
Signal. US retail diesel averaged 6.27 dollars a gallon on Tuesday, a new record, up from 6.23 dollars on Monday (AAA, 15 Sep). The New York Fed’s Empire State index fell to 7.6 in September from 20.6 in August, below the 14 to 15 expected. Prices paid rose to 63.1 (New York Fed, 15 Sep). August retail sales are due this morning. Consensus is +0.8 percent after July’s 0.6 percent drop (Wall Street Journal survey, 15 Sep).
Macro Impact. Activity cooled. Input prices did not. That is the ugly mix for a first Warsh hike. Diesel is the inflation households and truckers feel. Empire State is one regional print, not a recession. It is still a reminder that oil is already taxing the real economy as the Fed tightens.
Positioning. Stay light discretionary and transports (XLY, DAL, AAL). XLY fell 1.8 percent yesterday. Do not buy the growth dip on one soft factory survey. The inflation side of the print is what the SEP will care about.

|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 69 | 10Y at 5.00% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 56 | 5Y at 4.73% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 31 | VIX 17.2 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 7 | SPY -0.7%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth -20 |
| Composite | 44 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 17.20, 10Y at 5.00%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
No flip versus Tuesday’s 42 NEUTRAL print. Fiscal 69. CB 56. Flow 31. Narrative 7. Composite 44, up 2 points, last step before Caution. Trade 44 as an FOMC-morning print, not as a green light. A hawkish afternoon can put Caution on in one session.
