The Fed meets today. A hike looks likely.
A tanker hit mines in Hormuz. The strait stays shut.
Stocks faded yesterday. Semis led the drop.Tuesday FOMC-day edition — US cash, VIX and Treasuries are through the 14 Sep 2026 close. The two-day Fed meeting starts today. The statement, SEP and press conference are tomorrow.
No scorecard flip. Composite 42, NEUTRAL, unchanged from Monday. The tape did move. Stocks faded Friday’s bounce. VIX woke up. A tanker hit mines in Hormuz overnight. Do not read 42 as all-clear into Wednesday.

The Dow closed Monday at 52,421, down 0.29 percent. The Nasdaq closed Monday at 26,186, down 0.56 percent. Friday’s bounce is gone. Oil is not.
The Fed Meets Today. A Hike Looks Likely.Signal. The FOMC’s two-day meeting starts today. The decision, SEP and dot plot land tomorrow at 2 p.m. Eastern, with Chair Warsh at 2:30 p.m. (Federal Reserve calendar). Futures priced a better than 92 percent chance of a quarter-point hike on Monday afternoon, plus more than 75 percent odds of another move in December (CME FedWatch via CNBC, 14 Sep). A Reuters poll found 86 of 101 economists expect a lift to 3.75 to 4.00 percent, the first increase since July 2023 (Reuters, 14 Sep). Policy is still 3.50 to 3.75 percent.
Macro Impact. Labor is not the veto. Inflation is. August core CPI rose 0.3 percent on the month. Oil and diesel are higher than they were at that print. July’s vote was 9 to 3. The margin tomorrow matters as much as the hike. A one-and-done tone would let duration and quality catch a bid. A hawkish set of dots would hit high-beta tech again.
Positioning. Stay light duration into the statement. TLT was little changed yesterday, up 0.07 percent. That is not a buy. Prefer staples over Nasdaq beta. If the Fed hikes and sounds done, cover some underweights. If the dots show more, add to TLT shorts and cut SMH.

A Tanker Hit Mines in Hormuz. The Strait Stays Shut.Signal. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said a supertanker, EL GAIA, exploded after hitting naval mines on a route south of the Strait of Hormuz. The navy said the fire could not be contained and that the strait remains closed under its control (IRGC via Fars, IANS, 14 to 15 Sep). Gulf-Iran talks that had been set for Monday were already postponed (Reuters, Guardian, 13 to 14 Sep). Saturday’s projectile strike on a vessel was not a one-off.
Macro Impact. Physical barrels stay trapped. Hormuz used to move about a fifth of global oil. Traffic is still a fraction of that. A mine hit is a different risk than a one-ship projectile. Insurers and owners will not send more steel through a mined strait. Fade any leftover “deal” headline into Wednesday.
Positioning. Keep the energy overweight (USO, XOM, CVX). Own the barrel first. USO rose 1.1 percent yesterday. XLE fell 0.94 percent. The hike tape is compressing energy stocks even as crude holds. Keep a small defense sleeve (ITA, LMT). Lockheed rose 0.99 percent yesterday.
Key Sources. IANS 15 Sep; Fars/IRGC 14 Sep; Reuters and Guardian 13 to 14 Sep.
Signal. Brent rose to 107.08 dollars yesterday, up 2.4 percent from Friday’s 104.61 close. WTI rose to 102.88 dollars yesterday, up 2.8 percent from Friday’s 100.05 close. Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline remains shut after last week’s drone hits. Traders still say Yanbu stocks may cover exports for only five to seven days if the line stays down (Reuters, CNBC-TV18, 13 to 14 Sep). Houthis still hold Perim Island at the mouth of Bab el-Mandeb.
Macro Impact. Hormuz is the front door. The East-West line was the bypass. Perim sits on the other chokepoint. All three stay impaired into the Fed. Friday’s oil dip was a rumor. Monday took it back and kept it. Do not fade crude into the statement.
Positioning. Hold USO, XOM, CVX. Prefer the barrel over the equity until the dots are out. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL). DAL fell 0.14 percent yesterday. ITA is the hedge if Perim becomes a shooting gallery.
Key Sources. Market closes 14 Sep (Brent, WTI); Reuters 14 Sep; CNBC-TV18 14 Sep.
Stocks Faded Yesterday. Semis Led the Drop.Signal. The S&P 500 fell 0.48 percent yesterday to 7,619.98. The Nasdaq fell 0.56 percent. The Dow fell 0.29 percent. VIX rose 8.0 percent yesterday to 17.10. Semis (SMH) fell 4.8 percent yesterday. Nvidia fell 3.4 percent yesterday to 210.96 dollars. AMD fell 4.4 percent yesterday to 493.41 dollars. Digital Realty fell 5.0 percent. Oracle fell 3.7 percent.
Macro Impact. Equities bought cheaper oil on Friday. That oil is gone and the Fed is live. A 17-handle VIX with Brent at 107 dollars and hike odds above 90 percent is still complacent into a Wednesday press conference. The scorecard sits at 42 because narrative stayed coherent, not because vol or oil eased. Flow pressure jumped as VIX woke up.
Positioning. Do not sell vol at 17 into 16 Sep. Prefer staples (XLP) over high-beta tech (XLK, SMH). XLP rose 1.3 percent yesterday. That was the bid. Fade the small-cap tape. IWM fell 0.34 percent yesterday. Do not buy Nvidia on the dip until the statement is out.
Key Sources. Market closes 14 Sep.
Signal. US retail diesel averaged 6.23 dollars a gallon on Monday, another record (AAA via WWNY, Yeni Şafak, 14 Sep). It had already crossed 6 dollars a gallon last week. Gold fell 1.3 percent yesterday to 4,350 dollars as the dollar rose. DXY rose 0.50 percent yesterday to 99.61. The 10-year yield eased 1 basis point to 4.96 percent. That is not a duration all-clear.
Macro Impact. Diesel is the inflation households and truckers feel. It is also the input that turns a one-time oil shock into core. That is the tape Warsh takes into the SEP. Airlines and discretionary get squeezed twice, once at the pump and once if the dots are hawkish. Gold lost to the dollar and to hike odds.
Positioning. Stay light XLY, DAL, AAL. Keep staples (XLP) as the defensive sleeve. Gold is a small hedge, not a momentum long after yesterday’s drop.
Key Sources. AAA via WWNY 14 Sep; Yeni Şafak 14 Sep; market closes 14 Sep (gold, DXY, 10-year).

The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 17.10, 10Y at 4.96%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
No flip versus Monday’s 42 NEUTRAL print. Fiscal 68. CB 47. Flow 35. Narrative 7. Composite 42, unchanged. Flow jumped 14 points as VIX rose to 17.10. Trade 42 as an FOMC-eve print, not as a green light. A hawkish Wednesday can put Caution back on in one session.
