Hormuz talks were postponed. A ship was hit.
Core CPI rose 0.3 percent. A hike looks likely.
Stocks bounced Friday. Futures are softer now.Monday pre-open edition — US cash, VIX and Treasuries are through the 11 Sep 2026 close. Oil, gold and the dollar printed on Sunday 13 Sep. US cash reopens later today. FOMC is 15 to 16 Sep.
No scorecard flip. Composite 42, NEUTRAL, up 1 from Sunday on a one-point flow tick. The news did flip. Hormuz talks set for today were postponed. A ship was hit in the strait. Oil jumped Sunday. Do not read 42 as all-clear into Wednesday.

The Dow closed Friday at 52,573, up 0.98 percent. The Nasdaq closed Friday at 26,333, up 0.96 percent. S&P futures fell 0.35 percent Sunday. Nasdaq futures fell 1.1 percent Sunday. Cash still sits on Friday’s bounce. Oil does not.
Hormuz Talks Were Postponed. A Ship Was Hit.Signal. Oman postponed today’s Gulf-Iran meeting on the Strait of Hormuz, citing the need for consensus (Reuters, CNN, 13 Sep). Iran already said an Oman understanding would not reopen the strait. UKMTO then reported a vessel struck by an unknown projectile in Hormuz late Saturday, with a fire and a crew evacuation (UKMTO, Reuters, 13 Sep). Iran said one person was killed and four crew were wounded on an Iranian commercial vessel off its coast (Reuters, CNN, 13 Sep).
Macro Impact. Sunday’s report said talks would not reopen Hormuz. Overnight they were cancelled. Physical barrels stay trapped. About a fifth of global oil used to move through the strait. Traffic is still about 90 percent below pre-conflict levels (CNN, 13 Sep). Fade any leftover “deal” headline into the US cash reopen.
Positioning. Keep the energy overweight (USO, XOM, CVX). USO fell 2.2 percent Friday on the talks rumor. That rumor is dead. Own the barrel. Keep a small defense sleeve (ITA, LMT). Lockheed fell 1.1 percent Friday. That is still the cleaner add than fading crude.
Key Sources. Reuters 13 Sep (Oman postpone, vessel, oil); CNN 13 Sep; UKMTO 13 Sep.
Signal. Brent rose to 107.18 dollars Sunday, up 2.5 percent from Friday’s 104.61 close. WTI rose to 102.54 dollars Sunday, up 2.5 percent from Friday’s 100.05 close. Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline remains shut after Thursday’s drone hits from Iraq (Reuters, 11 to 13 Sep). Traders told Reuters that Yanbu stocks may cover exports for only five to seven days if the line stays down (Reuters, 13 Sep). Houthis also struck Saudi Arabia’s Jazan province on Sunday (Reuters, 13 Sep). They still hold Perim Island at the mouth of Bab el-Mandeb.
Macro Impact. Hormuz is the front door. The East-West line was the bypass. Perim sits on the other chokepoint. All three are impaired as US cash reopens. Friday’s 2.8 percent Brent drop was a rumor. Sunday took it back. Do not fade crude into the open.
Positioning. Hold XLE, XOM, CVX. XLE rose 0.32 percent Friday. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL) even after Friday’s bounce. DAL rose 2.1 percent Friday. That bounce dies if diesel stays bid. ITA is the hedge if Perim becomes a shooting gallery.
Key Sources. Market closes 13 Sep (Brent, WTI); Reuters 13 Sep pipeline, Yanbu, Jazan.
Core CPI Rose 0.3 Percent. A Hike Looks Likely.Signal. August CPI rose 0.4 percent on the month and 3.4 percent over the year (BLS, 11 Sep). Core CPI rose 0.3 percent on the month, above the 0.2 percent forecast. Core was 2.4 percent over the year. Gasoline rose 3.9 percent and accounted for more than a third of the monthly headline increase. Traders lifted September hike odds to about 85 to 90 percent after the print (CME FedWatch via CBS, CNBC, 11 Sep). Policy is still 3.50 to 3.75 percent. The Fed meets 15 to 16 Sep. Chair Warsh is in blackout.
Macro Impact. Labor is no longer the veto. Inflation is. Headline looked hot because of energy. The 0.3 percent core print is the one the Committee sees. Sunday’s oil jump makes the energy leg worse into Wednesday, not better. A hold now needs a speech, not the data. This is still a one and done debate until the dots say otherwise.
Positioning. Stay light duration into Wednesday. TLT rose 0.11 percent Friday. That is not a buy signal. Prefer financials in small size (XLF, JPM). JPM rose 0.76 percent Friday. Do not add Nasdaq beta because hike odds went up. If the Fed hikes and sounds one and done, cover some underweights. If the dots show more, add to TLT shorts and cut high-beta tech.
Key Sources. BLS CPI 11 Sep; CBS 11 Sep; CNBC 11 Sep; Federal Reserve calendar 15 to 16 Sep.
Stocks Bounced Friday. Futures Are Softer Now.Signal. The S&P 500 rose 0.86 percent Friday to 7,656.98, ending a four-day slide. The Nasdaq rose 0.96 percent. The Dow rose 0.98 percent. VIX fell 11.2 percent Friday to 15.84. Semis (SMH) rose 1.5 percent Friday. AMD rose 2.5 percent Friday to 516.13 dollars. Nvidia was little changed Friday at 218.29 dollars. S&P futures then fell 0.35 percent Sunday. Nasdaq futures fell 1.1 percent Sunday.
Macro Impact. Equities bought cheaper oil on Friday, not a cooler inflation print. That oil dip is gone. A 15.8 VIX with Brent at 107.18 dollars and hike odds near 90 percent is complacent into a Wednesday FOMC. The scorecard sits at 42 because vol died, not because oil or core inflation did. A hawkish press conference would put 17-handle vol back in a session.
Positioning. Do not sell vol at 15.8 into 16 Sep. Prefer quality (SPHQ) and staples (XLP) over high-beta tech (XLK, SMH). SPHQ rose 0.98 percent Friday. Fade the small-cap bounce. IWM rose 0.41 percent Friday. Do not buy the broad index until the statement is out.
Key Sources. Market closes 11 Sep; futures 13 Sep.
Signal. US retail diesel rose to another all-time high above 6.20 dollars a gallon on Sunday (Reuters, 13 Sep). It had already crossed 6 dollars a gallon on Friday (AAA via Bloomberg, 11 Sep). Michigan preliminary sentiment fell to 47.8 in early September from 51.7, and year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to 4.6 percent from 4.0 percent (University of Michigan, 11 Sep). Iraq still has three crossings with Iran shut after Saturday’s drone-site raid (Al Jazeera, 12 Sep).
Macro Impact. Diesel is the inflation that households and truckers feel. It is also the input that turns a one-time oil shock into core. That is the tape Warsh takes into the SEP. Airlines and discretionary get squeezed twice, once at the pump and once if the dots are hawkish.
Positioning. Stay light XLY, DAL, AAL. Keep utilities (XLU, NEE) as the defensive AI sleeve. XLU fell 0.31 percent Friday. Gold is a small hedge, not a momentum long. Futures rose to 4,396 dollars Sunday.

|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 69 | 10Y at 4.97% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 55 | 5Y at 4.71% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |

| Composite | 42 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 15.84, 10Y at 4.97%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
No flip versus Sunday’s 41 NEUTRAL print. Fiscal 69. CB 55. Flow 21. Narrative 9. Composite 42, up 1 on a one-point flow tick. Cash markets have not reopened. Weekend headlines have. Talks were postponed. A ship was hit. Oil jumped Sunday. Trade 42 as a Friday-tape print, not as a green light. A hawkish Wednesday can put Caution back on in one session.
