Brent jumped to 108 dollars. Tankers were hit again.
PPI ran hot. A September hike now looks likely.
Stocks fell a fourth day. Yields jumped.
CPI prints this morning. That decides the Fed.Data through the 10 Sep 2026 US close. August CPI prints this morning at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. FOMC is next week.
REGIME FLIP. Composite 52, CAUTION, up 10 points from yesterday’s 42 NEUTRAL. Brent settled near 108 dollars. The 10-year yield jumped to 4.94 percent. That is no longer a quiet oil overlay. It is a rates-and-oil stress day into CPI.
| Asset | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,591.70 | -0.58% (Thu) |
| VIX | 17.84 | +8.4% (Thu) |
| US 10Y Yield | 4.94% | +11 bp (Thu) |
| US 5Y Yield | 4.73% | +12 bp (Thu) |
| Brent Crude | $107.85 | +6.6% (Thu) |
| WTI Crude | $102.72 | +6.9% (Thu) |
| Gold | $4,358 | -1.3% (Thu) |
| Dollar Index (DXY) | 99.13 | +0.37% (Thu) |
The Dow fell 0.60 percent yesterday to 52,064. The Nasdaq fell 0.65 percent to 26,082. Vol woke up. VIX at 17.84 is no longer asleep next to 108-dollar oil.
Brent Jumped to $107.85. WTI Cleared 100 Dollars.Signal. Brent rose 6.6 percent yesterday to $107.85, the highest settle since May. WTI rose 6.9 percent yesterday to $102.72, the first close above 100 dollars since May. Iran had said it attacked 10 ships near Hormuz on Wednesday. UK maritime monitors then reported two more vessels hit on the Omani side Thursday evening. Iran-aligned Houthis seized Yemen’s port of Mocha, adding Red Sea risk. Hormuz flows remain far below pre-war levels.
Macro Impact. This is a supply shock sitting on a hot labor market and a live Fed hike debate. Diesel already jumped 24.1 percent in August PPI. Another week of 108-dollar oil leaks into core via freight, fares, and goods. Do not fade crude on a ceasefire headline.
Positioning. Overweight crude beta (USO, XOM). USO rose 5.6 percent yesterday. Energy stocks lagged. XLE fell 0.58 percent. Exxon rose 0.6 percent. Chevron fell 0.5 percent. Buy the lag, do not chase the futures. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL) and consumer discretionary (XLY). Keep a small defense sleeve. Lockheed rose 1.1 percent yesterday.

PPI Ran Hot. The 10-Year Yield Hit 4.94 Percent.Signal. August PPI rose 0.4 percent on the month, as expected. It rose 5.4 percent over the year, above the 5.3 percent forecast (BLS, 10 Sep). Diesel jumped 24.1 percent. Goods rose 1.1 percent. Core PPI rose 0.2 percent on the month and 4.6 percent over the year. The 10-year yield rose 11 basis points yesterday to 4.94 percent. The 5-year yield rose 12 basis points yesterday to 4.73 percent. Traders put a September hike near 70 percent after the print (Reuters, CME FedWatch). Policy is still 3.50 to 3.75 percent.
Macro Impact. Pipeline inflation is energy-led, not a one-off. The ECB hiked 25 basis points yesterday to 2.50 percent and said Middle East oil will keep inflation above target for an extended period. The Fed meets 15 to 16 Sep. A cool core CPI can still produce a hold. A firm core with oil at 108 dollars likely locks the hike.
Positioning. Stay light duration. TLT fell 1.2 percent yesterday. Prefer financials in small size (XLF, JPM) over long bonds. Do not buy the dip in TLT into CPI. Gold is a policy-error hedge, not a momentum long. Gold futures fell 1.3 percent yesterday to $4,358 as yields and the dollar rose.

Stocks Fell a Fourth Day. VIX Rose to 17.84.Signal. The S&P 500 fell 0.58 percent yesterday to 7,591.70, a fourth straight decline. The Nasdaq fell 0.65 percent. Small caps (IWM) fell 1.0 percent. Semis (SMH) fell 2.4 percent. Nvidia fell 2.3 percent yesterday to $218.36. AMD fell 3.4 percent yesterday to $503.60. VIX rose 8.4 percent yesterday to 17.84. The dollar rose. DXY closed at 99.13, up 0.37 percent. Emerging markets (EEM) fell 2.2 percent. Freeport fell 6.6 percent.
Macro Impact. Equities are finally paying for oil and yields. They have not paid enough. A 17.8 VIX with Brent near 108 dollars and hike odds near 70 percent is still a contained stress print, not a crash. A hot CPI would force the next leg. A cool core would squeeze shorts into the weekend.
Positioning. Do not sell vol at 17.8 into CPI. Prefer quality (SPHQ) and staples (XLP) over high-beta tech (XLK, SMH). Fade small caps. Stay underweight copper and China cyclicals (FCX, VALE). Do not buy the broad index dip until the CPI tape is in.

CPI Prints This Morning. That Is the Fed Veto.Signal. August CPI prints today at 8:30 a.m. Eastern (BLS). Consensus is 0.4 percent on the month and 3.4 percent over the year for headline. Core is seen at 0.2 percent and 2.4 percent, down from 2.5 percent in July. July CPI was 0.1 percent on the month and 3.4 percent over the year. Core was 0.2 percent and 2.5 percent. The United States added 162,000 jobs in August. Unemployment held at 4.1 percent (BLS, 4 Sep).
Macro Impact. Labor is no longer the veto. Inflation is. Headline will look hot because of energy. Core 0.2 percent keeps the hold case alive. Core 0.3 percent likely locks 16 Sep. Size for a binary morning, not a trend week. Three trading sessions sit between this print and the FOMC decision.
Positioning. Stay in cash-heavy risk into the number. Keep energy as the core book. Do not add Nasdaq or duration before 8:30 a.m. Eastern. If core is 0.2 percent or softer, cover some underweights. If core is 0.3 percent, add to TLT shorts and cut high-beta tech.

Signal. Oracle fell 5.4 percent yesterday to $152.94 in the cash session, then reported after the close. Adjusted earnings were 1.92 dollars a share versus 1.74 expected. Revenue rose 30 percent to 19.35 billion dollars. Cloud infrastructure revenue more than doubled to 7.4 billion dollars. Backlog rose to 664 billion dollars. Adobe also beat. Revenue was 6.76 billion dollars. Adjusted earnings were 6.13 dollars a share. Adobe fell 2.4 percent yesterday to $248.83. The AI capex story did not break. The multiple did, because the 10-year yield is 4.94 percent.
Macro Impact. Demand for AI cloud is still there. Oracle also spent 28.5 billion dollars of capex in one quarter. That is a financing story as much as a demand story when the 10-year is near 5 percent. Picks-and-shovels (power, networking, data centers) still hold up better than unprofitable software if the Fed hikes. Do not treat an after-hours pop as a new leadership tape.
Positioning. Hold Nvidia. Do not chase Oracle in the premarket. Overweight DLR, EQIX, XLU, NEE on dips. Data-center REITs fell about 2 percent yesterday. That is the cleaner AI sleeve than adding software into CPI.

Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 15.84, 10Y at 4.97%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
REGIME FLIP versus yesterday’s 42 NEUTRAL print. Fiscal 66 to 69. CB 51 to 66. Flow 29 to 40. Narrative 12 to 25. The 5-year yield and the 11 basis-point 10-year jump did the damage. A hot core CPI would push the composite toward the top of this band. A cool core would knock it back toward NEUTRAL. Until the print, trade the flip, not the hope.
