🌍 Market Regime — September 10, 2026

September 10, 2026 · Top 5 regime drivers, risk matrix, positioning

In short
🌍 MARKET REGIME, Sep 10 (Thu)
1. Iran Brent closed at 101 dollars. Iran hit ships.
2. United States Stocks fell again. Oil fed the hike case.
3. United States A September hike is still live. PPI prints today.
4. Canada Washington banned more Canadian goods yesterday.
5. 🤖 Oracle and Adobe report after the close.
Signal. Neutral. Overweight energy into CPI. Score 42 of 100.

Data through the 9 Sep 2026 US close. Cash markets are shut overnight. PPI, the ECB decision, and Oracle and Adobe earnings all land today.

No scorecard flip. Composite 42, NEUTRAL, up 4 points from yesterday. ESCALATION, not a regime change: Brent closed at $101.30 after Iran said it attacked 10 ships. That is more war risk into Thursday’s PPI and Friday’s CPI, not a new regime.

The Dow fell 0.77 percent yesterday to 52,381. The Nasdaq fell 0.64 percent to 26,253. Vol rose, but 16.5 is still quiet with Brent at $101.30 and a live hike debate.

Top 5 Regime Drivers

1. Iran Brent Closed at $101.30. Iran Said It Hit 10 Ships.

Signal. The United States destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday after failed missile shots at a Navy ship. On Wednesday Iran said it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, including two US vessels and eight oil tankers, and fired ballistic missiles at a US base in Jordan. One seafarer was killed on the Hercules Star off Dubai. Another was listed as missing. Brent rose 3.5 percent yesterday to $101.30, the first settle above $100 since July. WTI rose 3.7 percent yesterday to $96.48. Energy (XLE) rose 0.8 percent. Exxon rose 2.2 percent. Chevron rose 1.9 percent.

Macro Impact. Tanker-for-tanker is still the operating rule. Hormuz traffic is already thin. This is a supply shock sitting on a hot labor market, one day before PPI and two days before CPI. President Trump said Wednesday that the war is likely to keep oil elevated through the US midterms. Do not fade oil on political soundbites.

Positioning. Overweight energy (XLE, USO, XOM, CVX). Keep a small defense sleeve (ITA, LMT) even though ITA fell 1.8 percent yesterday and Lockheed fell 2.2 percent. Stay light airlines and consumer discretionary (XLY). XLY fell 1.3 percent yesterday.

Key Sources. Reuters, Al Jazeera, France 24, CENTCOM 9 Sep; AP 9 Sep; market closes 9 Sep.

2. United States Stocks Fell a Third Day. The 10-Year Yield Rose to 4.84 Percent.

Signal. The S&P 500 fell 0.48 percent yesterday to 7,636.36, a third straight decline. The Dow fell 0.77 percent. The Nasdaq fell 0.64 percent. Small caps (IWM) fell 1.4 percent. VIX closed at 16.46, up 4.7 percent on the day. The 10-year yield rose 3 basis points to 4.84 percent. The 5-year yield rose 4 basis points to 4.61 percent. The Treasury said it will buy back up to $6 billion of longer-term debt. Yields still rose. The dollar barely moved. DXY closed at 98.77, down 0.07 percent.

Macro Impact. Equities finally paid a bit for $101 oil. They have not paid much. VIX at 16.5 with hike odds near 60 percent and a live Gulf war is still asleep. If Brent holds near 101 dollars through Friday’s CPI, the inflation overlay gets harder for the Fed to ignore.

Positioning. Do not sell vol at 16.5 into CPI. Prefer quality (SPHQ) and utilities (XLU, NEE) over high-beta cyclicals. Keep duration light (TLT). TLT fell 0.6 percent yesterday. Do not buy the dip in the broad index until CPI prints.

Key Sources. Market closes 9 Sep; Reuters, AP, CNBC, Bloomberg 9 Sep.

3. United States PPI Prints Today. CPI Tomorrow Is the Veto.

Signal. The United States added 162,000 jobs in August. The unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent (BLS, 4 Sep). Policy is still 3.50 to 3.75 percent. Reuters put September hike odds near 60 percent after Wednesday’s close. August PPI prints today at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. August CPI prints 11 Sep at 8:30 a.m. Eastern (BLS). July CPI was 0.1 percent on the month and 3.4 percent over the year. Core was 0.2 percent and 2.5 percent. The ECB decides today in Berlin. A 25 bp hike is widely expected.

Macro Impact. Labor is no longer the veto. Inflation is. A cool core can still produce a hold. A firm print with Brent at $101.30 likely locks 16 Sep. Size for a binary 48 hours, not a trend week.

Positioning. Do not buy TLT. Keep some financials (XLF, JPM) for a hike, but do not chase. Fade small caps (IWM). Hold a small gold sleeve as a policy-error hedge. Gold futures rose 1.4 percent yesterday to $4,457.

Key Sources. BLS Employment Situation 4 Sep; BLS CPI schedule 11 Sep; BLS PPI schedule 10 Sep; Reuters 9 Sep; ECB calendar 10 Sep; Federal Reserve calendar 15–16 Sep.

4. Canada Washington Banned More Canadian Goods.

Signal. The United States moved to ban dairy products, most alcohol, and motorcycles from Canada (AP, CNBC, 9 Sep). Canadian tariffs on US goods took effect Tuesday. This is a North American supply shock on top of Gulf oil, not a sideshow.

Macro Impact. Tariffs feed goods inflation the same week CPI prints. Autos, food, and energy-adjacent trade are the first hit. It also complicates the growth picture if the Fed hikes into a trade fight. Secondary to Hormuz, but it raises the odds that Friday’s print is not clean.

Positioning. Underweight Canada-sensitive cyclicals and retailers that import north-south goods. Prefer domestic energy and defense over broad consumer. Do not treat this as the main book. Size it as an inflation tail, not a CAD crash.

Key Sources. AP, CNBC, Reuters 8–9 Sep.

5. 🤖 Nvidia Slipped. AMD Rose. Oracle and Adobe Report Tonight.

Signal. Nvidia fell 0.9 percent yesterday to $223.67. AMD rose 3.0 percent yesterday to $521.10. The semiconductor ETF was little changed. Oracle fell 0.5 percent to $161.63. Adobe fell 0.9 percent to $254.86. Both report after the close on 10 Sep (company calendars; yfinance). The AI capex story did not break. Leadership inside it did rotate.

Macro Impact. A 4.84 percent 10-year and $101 oil still cap how far you chase the tape. Picks-and-shovels (power, networking, data centers) hold up better than unprofitable software if the Fed hikes. Oracle tonight is the next capex tell, one day before CPI.

Positioning. Hold Nvidia. Do not chase AMD after a 3.0 percent day on top of Tuesday’s jump. Overweight DLR, EQIX, XLU, NEE. Treat Oracle as an event, not a momentum add.

Key Sources. Market closes 9 Sep; Oracle IR 2 Sep; Adobe 31 Aug; yfinance earnings calendars.

Regime Scorecard (Live — 9 Sep Close)

VariableScoreInterpretation
Fiscal Impulse6610Y at 4.84% — moderately restrictive
CB Elasticity515Y at 4.57% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target
Flow Pressure29VIX 16.5 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil
Narrative Coherence12SPY -0.4%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth +28
Composite42NEUTRAL

Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 FÖRSIKTIGHET | ≥61 RISK-OFF

The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 16.46, 10Y at 4.84%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward FÖRSIKTIGHET.

No regime flip versus yesterday’s 38 print. Both days are NEUTRAL. Fiscal ticked 65 to 66. CB ticked 49 to 51. Flow rose 22 to 29. Narrative rose 5 to 12. The live overlay is $101 oil, which Thursday cash has only overnight to digest. A hot CPI plus $101 oil would likely push the composite through 45. A cool print would knock it back.
