US hit five Iranian tankers. Brent jumped.
Stocks fell yesterday. Oil fed inflation risk.
A September hike is still live. CPI prints Friday.
Canada tariffs hit. The trade fight got worse.Data through the 8 Sep 2026 US close. Cash markets are shut overnight. CENTCOM’s five-tanker statement landed after the cash close and sits on top of Tuesday’s tape.
No scorecard flip. Composite 38, NEUTRAL, up 1 point from yesterday. ESCALATION, not a regime change: the United States destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after failed missile shots at a Navy ship. Brent already closed at $99.27. That is more war risk into Wednesday’s open, not a new regime.
| Asset | Level | Change |

| Dollar Index (DXY) | 98.80 | -0.36% (Tue) |
The Dow fell 1.18 percent yesterday to 52,786. The Nasdaq fell 0.32 percent. Vol is still quiet at 15.7. That is complacent with Brent at $99.27 and a live hike debate.
US Destroyed Five Iranian Tankers. Oil Is at a Six-Week High.Signal. US Central Command said Tuesday night it destroyed five IRGC crude carriers (Kaviz, Charminar, Horizon 1, Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, and Derya near Kharg Island) after Iran twice fired ballistic missiles at a Navy warship. Crews were told to abandon ship first. No US personnel were harmed. This is the second tanker round in four days. CENTCOM hit three Iranian carriers on 5 Sep. Iran fired missiles toward a US base in Jordan, per Iranian state media. Brent rose 3.1 percent yesterday to $99.27. WTI rose 3.0 percent to $94.25. Energy (XLE) rose 1.1 percent.
Macro Impact. Tanker-for-tanker is the operating rule, not a ceasefire. Kharg is Iran’s export hub. Insurance, freight, and the Hormuz exclusion-zone threat from Sunday all stack into Friday’s CPI and the 16 Sep FOMC. This is a supply shock sitting on a hot labor market. Do not fade oil on political soundbites.
Positioning. Overweight energy (XLE, USO, XOM, CVX). Keep a small defense sleeve (ITA, LMT) even though ITA fell 0.9 percent yesterday. Long Brent call spreads as a tail into $100. Stay light airlines and consumer discretionary (XLY).

Stocks Fell. Oil Is Feeding Inflation Risk Into the Fed Week.Signal. The S&P 500 fell 0.58 percent yesterday to 7,673.52. The Dow fell 1.18 percent, its weakest session in nearly three weeks. VIX closed at 15.72, up 2.8 percent on the day. The 10-year yield rose 2 basis points to 4.81 percent. The 5-year yield rose to 4.57 percent. CME FedWatch still showed about a 58 percent chance of a 25 bp hike on 16 Sep (TipRanks, 8 Sep). The dollar slipped. DXY closed at 98.80, down 0.36 percent.
Macro Impact. This is the first real cash session after Labor Day. Equities finally paid a bit for $99 oil. They have not paid much. VIX at 15.7 with hike odds near 58 percent and a live Gulf war is still asleep. If Brent holds near 99 dollars through Friday’s CPI, the inflation overlay gets harder for the Fed to ignore.
Positioning. Do not sell vol at 15.7 into CPI. Prefer quality (SPHQ) and utilities (XLU, NEE) over high-beta cyclicals. Keep duration light (TLT). Do not buy the dip in the broad index until CPI prints.
Key Sources. Market closes 8 Sep; TipRanks FedWatch 8 Sep; Yahoo/MarketWatch wraps 8 Sep.
Jobs Beat Still Stands. CPI on Friday Is the Veto.Signal. The United States added 162,000 jobs in August. The unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent (BLS, 4 Sep). Policy is still 3.50 to 3.75 percent. Macquarie moved its first-hike baseline to September. UBS still sees two hikes in 2026. Citigroup pushed its cut call out to 2027 (Reuters). President Trump is still pressing Chair Warsh for easier policy. August PPI prints 10 Sep. August CPI prints 11 Sep at 8:30 a.m. Eastern (BLS). July CPI was 0.1 percent on the month and 3.4 percent over the year. Core was 0.2 percent and 2.5 percent.
Macro Impact. Labor is no longer the veto. Inflation is. A cool core can still produce a hold. A firm print with Brent at $99.27 likely locks 16 Sep. The White House overlay is noise until the data land. Size for a binary 48 hours, not a trend week.
Positioning. Do not buy TLT. Keep some financials (XLF, JPM) for a hike, but XLF fell 1.4 percent yesterday so do not chase. Fade small caps (IWM). Hold a small gold sleeve as a policy-error hedge. Gold futures closed at $4,417 yesterday, down 0.3 percent.

Canada Tariffs Took Effect. The Trade Fight Got Worse.Signal. Canadian tariffs on US goods took effect Tuesday. President Trump answered with an import ban on Canadian alcohol and other goods (BBC, NYT, PBS, Washington Post, 8–9 Sep). This is a North American supply shock on top of Gulf oil, not a sideshow.
Macro Impact. Tariffs feed goods inflation the same week CPI prints. Autos, food, and energy-adjacent trade are the first hit. It also complicates the growth picture if the Fed hikes into a trade fight. Secondary to Hormuz, but it raises the odds that Friday’s print is not clean.
Positioning. Underweight Canada-sensitive cyclicals and retailers that import north-south goods. Prefer domestic energy and defense over broad consumer. Do not treat this as the main book. Size it as an inflation tail, not a CAD crash.
Key Sources. BBC, NYT, PBS, Washington Post 8–9 Sep.
Signal. Nvidia fell 2.0 percent yesterday to $225.73. AMD rose 5.9 percent to $505.74. The semiconductor ETF rose 1.2 percent. Oracle rose 2.4 percent to $162.52 and reports after the close on 10 Sep. Adobe reports the same evening (yfinance calendars; Oracle IR). The AI capex story did not break. Leadership inside it did rotate.
Macro Impact. A 4.81 percent 10-year and $99 oil still cap how far you chase the tape. Picks-and-shovels (power, networking, data centers) hold up better than unprofitable software if the Fed hikes. Oracle on Thursday is the next capex tell, two days before CPI.
Positioning. Hold Nvidia. Do not chase AMD after a 5.9 percent day. Overweight DLR, EQIX, XLU, NEE. Treat Oracle as an event, not a momentum add.
Key Sources. Market closes 8 Sep; Oracle IR 2 Sep and 8 Sep; yfinance earnings calendars.

| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Energy (XLE, USO, XOM, CVX) | +6% | Five tankers plus Brent at $99.27. This is the cleanest book |
| Defense (ITA, LMT) | +3% | Tanker-for-tanker is the rule. Do not chase yesterday’s 0.9 percent dip in ITA |
| Financials (XLF, JPM) | +2% | Hike odds still near 58 percent. Size smaller after XLF fell 1.4 percent |
| Data Centers (DLR, EQIX) | +3% | Capex cycle intact. Oracle is the next tell |
| Utilities (XLU, NEE) | +2% | AI load plus a defensive yield into CPI |
| Quality (SPHQ) | +3% | Soft vol, split Fed, keep balance sheets clean |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT) | -4% | 10-year at 4.81 percent. CPI still ahead |
| Small Caps (IWM) | -3% | Rate sensitive into a live hike debate |
| Airlines / XLY | -3% | Fuel at $94 to $99. Canada tariffs add goods risk |
| Broad index dip-buying | -2% | S&P fell 0.58 percent. That is not enough oil pain yet |
| China cyclicals (FCX, VALE) | -2% | Still no Asia demand impulse that offsets Gulf oil |
Gold is a small hedge, not a momentum long. Futures closed at $4,417.
| Date | Event | Importance |

| 9 Sep (Wed) | ECB meeting day 1 (Berlin). Overnight tanker follow-through | High |

| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 65 | 10Y at 4.81% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 49 | 5Y at 4.54% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 22 | VIX 15.7 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 5 | SPY +0.6%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth +19 |
| Composite | 38 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 FÖRSIKTIGHET | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 15.72, 10Y at 4.81%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward FÖRSIKTIGHET.
No regime flip versus yesterday’s 37 print. Both days are NEUTRAL. Fiscal ticked 64 to 65. CB ticked 48 to 49. Flow held at 22. Narrative rose 2 to 5. The live overlay is overnight tanker strikes, which Wednesday cash has not priced. A hot CPI plus $99 oil would likely push the composite through 45. A cool print would knock it back.
