August 31, 2026 · Top 5 regime drivers, risk matrix, positioning
US hit Iran. Oil jumped on Hormuz risk.
Warsh left a September hike in play.
August jobs data on Friday is the test.
China factory PMI stayed under 50.Monday edition — US cash data through 28 Aug 2026 close. Oil, the dollar, gold futures and Asia include 30 to 31 Aug prints. US stocks reopen later today.
REGIME FLIP. Sunday’s US strike on Iran ended the Hormuz fade that framed the weekend. Scorecard is still NEUTRAL on Friday’s close. It does not yet price the overnight oil jump.
| Asset | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,711.76 | -0.25% (Fri) |
| VIX | 14.43 | -0.55% (Fri) |
| US 10Y Yield | 4.72% | +4.8 bp (Fri) |
| US 5Y Yield | 4.48% | +8.5 bp (Fri) |
| Brent Crude | $90.50 | +1.3% (Sun vs Fri) |
| WTI Crude | $85.42 | +2.4% (Sun vs Fri) |
| Gold (GLD) | $408.89 | -3.24% (Fri) |
| Dollar Index (DXY) | 99.60 | -0.10% (Sun vs Fri) |
S&P futures slipped 0.47% on Sunday. Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.57% Monday. Korea’s Kospi fell 2.15%. VIX at 14.43 still says Friday was calm. That calm is stale.
REGIME FLIP. US Struck Iran. Tehran Fired Back.Signal. US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, the first known American strikes on Iran since late July. Centcom said IRGC units were preparing to fire rockets with sea mines into the strait. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they then fired ballistic missiles at the King Hussein and Al Azraq US bases in Jordan. Jordan said it intercepted eight missiles (BBC, Reuters, 30 to 31 Aug).
Macro Impact. Brent futures climbed 1.3 percent overnight. WTI climbed 2.4 percent. Friday’s 5 percent weekly oil drop is no longer the live story. The Hormuz premium is back. That feeds the inflation case Warsh just revived. A wider exchange would reprice energy, defense, and the September Fed path in the same session.
Positioning. Flip energy from underweight to overweight (XLE, USO). Add a small defense bid (ITA). Keep a gold sleeve (GLD) as a tail hedge after Friday’s washout. Do not treat this as a full Hormuz shutdown yet. Size for a binary week, not a new bull market in crude.

Warsh Kept a September Hike Live. Asia Sold First.Signal. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh told Jackson Hole on Friday that inflation has not improved enough and that the Fed may have work to do. Futures lifted September hike odds to about 55 to 60 percent. Asia opened on that speech plus the oil spike. The Nikkei fell 1.57 percent Monday. The Kospi fell 2.15 percent (CNBC, Reuters, 28 to 31 Aug).
Macro Impact. The 10-year yield ended Friday at 4.72 percent. The 5-year yield rose to 4.48 percent. The dollar held those gains near 99.60. Equities only slipped 0.25 percent on Friday, so US cash has not yet voted on the overnight mix of hawkish talk and fresh strikes. Sticky energy plus a hawkish chair is the path to caution, not to a melt-up.
Positioning. Stay overweight financials (XLF) on a higher curve. Stay underweight long duration (TLT) and rate-sensitive small caps (IWM). Long dollar versus yen is cleaner than shorting the S&P before the US open.
Key Sources. CNBC 28 Aug “September Fed decision is now a coin flip”; Reuters 28 Aug “Rate-hike expectations rise on Warsh speech”; Reuters 31 Aug “Shares skid in Asia as oil, yields stay high”.
Soft Jobs Still Argue the Other Way. Friday Is the Test.Signal. BLS said Friday that payrolls through March 2026 were overstated by 79,000. That sits on top of July’s 23,000 job loss. Unemployment is 4.1 percent. August nonfarm payrolls print on 4 Sep (Fri). ISM manufacturing and JOLTS land tomorrow (NYT, Quartz, BLS, 28 Aug; NY Fed calendar).
Macro Impact. Soft labor versus sticky prices, now with a fresh oil spike, is the Fed’s bind. Warsh called the labor market consistent with full employment. The data look softer than that. A weak payrolls print would knock September hike odds back. A hot one plus dearer oil would push the scorecard toward caution.
Positioning. Do not full-price a September hike before Friday. Keep quality (SPHQ) over cyclicals that need a tight labor market. Fade 10-year spikes rather than short the whole curve.
Key Sources. NYT 28 Aug “Smaller Revision Points to More Accurate Jobs Numbers”; Quartz 28 Aug “BLS revises U.S. job growth down 79,000”; CNBC 7 Aug “U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23,000 jobs in July”.
China Factories Improved. They Still Contracted.Signal. China’s official manufacturing PMI rose to 49.8 in August from 49.2 in July. That beat forecasts around 49.6. It is still below 50 for a second month. Non-manufacturing held at 49.0. New orders moved back above 50. Construction did not (NBS, Reuters, SCMP, 31 Aug).
Macro Impact. The 800 billion yuan policy tool is still in the application queue. A PMI bounce without crossing 50 does not restart commodity demand. Australia, Brazil, and copper stay the clean underweights until money hits projects and the index holds above 50.
Positioning. Stay underweight FCX and VALE. KWEB is still a policy-hope trade. Watch AUD as the China proxy.
Key Sources. National Bureau of Statistics 31 Aug PMI release; Reuters 31 Aug “Chinese factory slump eases”; SCMP 31 Aug “China’s factory activity stays in contraction”.
Signal. Nvidia reported Q2 FY2027 results on 26 Aug. Shares still fell 4.57 percent on Friday as the post-report bounce faded with Warsh. AMD fell 2.33 percent Friday. The semiconductor ETF (SMH) fell 3.47 percent Friday. Korea’s chip-heavy Kospi led Asia lower Monday (NVIDIA 26 Aug; yfinance closes 28 Aug). Broadcom is due after the close on 2 Sep (Wed).
Macro Impact. The capex cycle is intact. The tape can still de-rate the stocks when yields and oil jump together. Power, cooling, and data centers remain the slower way to stay long the build-out.
Positioning. Buy NVDA, AMD, AVGO on dips, not into strength. Overweight DLR, EQIX, XLU, NEE. Do not read Friday’s chip drop as a broken AI cycle. Wait for Broadcom before adding size.

| Factor | Direction | Conviction | Horizon | Δ vs yesterday |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Geopolitics | Escalating (binary) | High | Days to 1 mo | ↗️ FLIP. Larak strike plus Jordan reply |

| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Energy (XLE, USO) | +4% | FLIP from underweight. Hormuz premium is back |
| Financials (XLF) | +4% | Higher curve and hike talk support net interest |
| Defense (ITA) | +2% | First US-Iran fire in weeks. Not a crowded panic bid yet |
| Data Centers (DLR, EQIX) | +3% | Multi-year power and rack demand |
| Utilities (XLU, NEE) | +2% | AI load plus defensive yield |
| Quality (SPHQ) | +3% | Soft growth, split Fed, keep balance sheets clean |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT) | -4% | 10-year backing up. Fiscal score still 62 |
| Small Caps (IWM) | -3% | Rate sensitive. Need a tight labor market they do not have |
| China cyclicals (FCX, VALE) | -3% | PMI still under 50. Stimulus still in the queue |
| Semis into strength (SOXX) | -2% | Hold the dip-buy, do not chase Friday’s fade or Monday Asia |
Gold is no longer an underweight. Friday’s 3.2 percent GLD drop plus overnight geo risk argues for a small rebuilt hedge, not a short.
| Date | Event | Importance |

| 31 Aug (Mon) | US cash open after Larak/Jordan exchange | High |
| 1 Sep (Tue) | ISM Manufacturing PMI, JOLTS (Jul) | High |
| 2 Sep (Wed) | ADP Payrolls (Aug), Beige Book, Broadcom earnings after close | High |
| 3 Sep (Thu) | ISM Services PMI, Productivity and Costs | High |

| 15 Sep (Tue) | FOMC meeting starts | High |
| 16 Sep (Wed) | FOMC decision and dot plot | Critical |
| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 62 | 10Y at 4.72% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 52 | 5Y at 4.45% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 12 | VIX 14.4 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 3 | SPY +0.8%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth +13 |
| Composite | 35 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 FÖRSIKTIGHET | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 14.43, 10Y at 4.72%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward FÖRSIKTIGHET.
No scorecard regime flip versus Sunday (37 to 35). Flow pressure eased because Friday’s VIX fell. That reading is stale. The live overlay is a geopolitics flip with US cash still closed. Friday’s 29 (risk-on) is gone. Payrolls on 4 Sep can knock this back to risk-on or push it into caution.
