In short
🌍 MARKET REGIME, Oct 18 (Sun)
Markets are closed. This is Friday's close.
1. Iran Guards say two tankers hit mines. No new oil close.
2. United States The caution score still stands. It is 49.
3. United States The Russia waiver is a 60 day pause.
4. United States Stocks fell on Friday. Do not buy the dip.
5. United States Import prices jumped. Do not buy bonds.
Signal. Caution. Hold energy. Do not chase oil. Score 49 of 100.

The flip stands. It is not a new flip. Score 49 of 100. The label is CAUTION. Yesterday the score was 49. The day before that it was 39. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. The line for RISK-ON is 30. This is a weekend edition. Markets are closed. The numbers are Friday's US close. There is no Sunday settlement.

The new wire is a mine claim. It is not a new oil price. Do not add the crude sleeve because two tankers reportedly hit mines. Do not sell it because a sanctions waiver was framed as a pause. Do not buy the chip dip because the week ended. Do not buy the long bond because the chair stayed quiet.

📊 Markets Bar

Friday is the last completed US session. Oil rows are named contracts, not a blended quote and not a Sunday screen. A touch of 110 is not the Brent settlement. December crude is not the November settlement.

December Brent (Fri close)109.86 dollarsUp 3.94 dollars, or 3.7 percent, vs Thursday's 105.92. Same contract. Session high 110.00
November WTI (Fri close)101.41 dollarsUp 3.44 dollars, or 3.5 percent, vs Thursday's 97.97. Same contract. This contract expires 20 Oct (Tue)
December WTI (Fri close)99.02 dollarsThis feed's Friday close. Not the November settlement. Not a roll of 101.41
Gold fund (Fri close)382.01Down 0.2 percent vs Thursday's 382.71. This note does not have a gold futures settlement
Dollar index (session feed)101.84Friday close. Down 0.16 percent vs Thursday's 102.00

Reuters said Brent futures settled at 109.86 dollars, up 3.94 dollars, or 3.7 percent, the highest since 19 May. It said WTI futures settled at 101.41 dollars, up 3.44 dollars, or 3.5 percent, the highest since 17 Sep. This feed's Friday close matches those two prints. December Brent on this feed is that 109.86 print. November crude on this feed is that 101.41 print.

December crude on this feed closed at 99.02 dollars. That is a different contract. Do not average 101.41 and 99.02. A two cent difference versus another screen is not a new settlement. This note does not cite volume. The feed repeated Thursday's volume on Friday for these contracts. That is not a thin market and it is not a thick one.

On the week, versus the 9 Oct (Fri) close, Brent rose 4.9 percent and WTI rose 10.4 percent on the same contracts Reuters used for the week. The Nasdaq fell 4.5 percent. The S&P fell 1.9 percent. The Dow rose 0.7 percent.

Top 5 Regime Drivers

1. Iran Two Tankers Reportedly Hit Mines. There Is No New Oil Close.

Signal. The weekend added a claim. It did not add a settlement.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday that two oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the official agency reported. State media said both were carrying about 2 million barrels of crude. Reuters said there was no independent confirmation. Ship names are not in that report. The vessels were said to have switched off positioning and to have used a route Iran had not authorised. The second was said to have been left immobilised.

That claim is not in Friday's oil close. Monday is the first US session that can price it. A Sunday screen is not a settlement.

The settlement that is in the book is Friday's. December Brent closed at 109.86 dollars. November WTI closed at 101.41 dollars. Brent touched 110 during Friday's session. The settlement is 109.86. Do not trade the touch.

November crude expires on 20 Oct (Tue). December crude on this feed closed at 99.02 dollars on Friday. After Tuesday, a lower headline can be a roll into December. It is not, by itself, a crash in the Friday settlement. Do not trade the roll as news.

The strait is still not open. Attacks had already surged before this claim. A Saudi-led coalition said on Friday it intercepted a ballistic missile launched toward Yanbu. Initial reports indicated no damage. An offer of emergency barrels is still an offer. The energy agency agreed on Thursday to release more than 20 million barrels of fuel. On Friday the United States offered an exchange of up to 17 million barrels from the emergency reserve. An offer is not oil in a tank.

Macro Impact. An unconfirmed mine claim keeps the inflation and growth drag in the book. It does not raise Friday's settlement, and it does not open the strait. Selling the sleeve because a waiver arrived is the trap. Adding the energy sector fund because of a Guards statement is the other trap. That fund rose 2.5 percent on Friday. The oil fund rose 2.8 percent. Those rises are why you do not add.

Positioning. Hold the core crude sleeve. Do not sell it. Do not add it. Do not add the energy sector fund. Cash still beats a chase into a closed weekend. Do not add defense. A mine claim without an independent report is not a new US order.

2. United States The Score Is Still 49. Do Not Dump the Book.

Signal. The label did not move overnight. The book did not get a new close.

The score is 49. Yesterday it was 49. The day before that it was 39. Fiscal pressure is 61, unchanged. Central bank pressure is 52, unchanged. Flow pressure is 53, unchanged. Narrative stress is 20, unchanged. VIX closed at 19.99 on Friday, up 3.53 points. The session high was 22.31. That high is not the close. Do not trade a fear headline from the session as the settlement of the fear gauge.

This is a weekend reading of Friday's close. Cash markets are shut. The next US session is 19 Oct (Mon). A Sunday screen is not a new close.

Macro Impact. A score that stays at 49 means the CAUTION label is on, and the crash call is still not. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. The score is 12 points short of that line. Using 49 as a reason to liquidate energy, cover nothing, and buy duration is the mistake. Using an unchanged 49 as a reason to buy Friday's dip is the other mistake. The Nasdaq fell 2.15 percent on Friday. The Dow fell 0.34 percent. Those are not the same tape.

Positioning. Trade 49 as a flip that already happened, not as a new one, and not as a dip to buy. Hold cash. Hold the crude sleeve. Stay underweight duration. Do not add high-beta tech. Do not add defense. Monday is the first session that can confirm or fade Friday's close, and the first session that can price the mine claim.

Key Sources. Friday closes on the same feed as the scorecard. The live reading for 18 Oct matches the 17 Oct reading because cash markets were shut.

3. United States The Waiver Is a 60 Day Pause. It Is Not a Cargo.

Signal. The sanctions waiver now has a clock. It still does not have barrels.

The secretary of state said the waiver of sweeping sanctions and tariffs on Russia is a 60 day pause to analyse what those measures would mean for the global economy and for the US economy. He pointed to high energy prices and the Iran war as the reason for that study period. The measures were days from taking effect when the waiver landed, after Friday's oil settlement.

That framing is new versus a bare waiver. It is still not oil in a tank. It is not in Friday's close. Monday is the first US session that can price a 60 day study against a mine claim. Those two wires pull in opposite directions. Neither one is a settlement.

The Ukrainian president said he expects more sanctions to be lifted, and called the move support for Moscow. That is the political cut. It is not a cargo count.

Macro Impact. A 60 day pause can soften the Monday oil bid. It cannot open the strait, and it cannot erase a December Brent close of 109.86 dollars. Selling the sleeve on the pause is the trap. Adding the sleeve because the pause might be reversed is the other trap. The study is the point of the 60 days. It is not a decision.

Positioning. Do not sell crude because of the pause. Do not add crude because the pause might fail. Hold the sleeve. Let Monday price both wires. Cash still beats a weekend guess about which wire wins.

4. United States Stocks Fell on Friday. Do Not Buy the Dip.

Signal. Friday's cash close is still the book. The weekend did not repair it.

The S&P 500 fell 1.09 percent to 7,659.44. The Nasdaq fell 2.15 percent to 26,140.03. The Dow fell 0.34 percent to 52,002.41. On the week, versus the 9 Oct (Fri) close, the Nasdaq fell 4.5 percent, the S&P fell 1.9 percent, and the Dow rose 0.7 percent.

The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 3.8 percent on Friday, to 11,137.29 from 11,581.21. That is an eighth straight down session, from 7 Oct (Wed) through 16 Oct (Fri). The semiconductor fund fell 3.4 percent on Friday. Nvidia fell 1.4 percent on Friday, from 217.23 to 214.13. Broadcom fell 4.5 percent on Friday. The Nasdaq fund fell 2.5 percent on Friday. The S&P fund fell 1.1 percent. Do not read stocks as one price.

Factory output rose 0.3 percent in September. The quarter slowed to a 0.7 percent annualized pace, from 5.6 percent in the spring quarter. That is not an all-clear for the buildout, and it is not a recession print.

Macro Impact. A 1.09 percent drop in the S&P, with the chip index down 3.8 percent for an eighth day and the Dow down only 0.34 percent, is the rotation out of the high-beta trade. It is not a market-wide crash. Buying the semiconductor fund because the weekend was quiet is how Friday's loss becomes Monday's loss. Shorting the Dow because chips fell is the other error. The Dow is up 0.7 percent on the week.

Positioning. Do not buy the semiconductor fund. Do not short it into a closed weekend. Do not add high-beta tech. A starter in utilities is still the cleaner expression than a chip dip. The utilities fund rose 1.3 percent on Friday. That is not a reason to add. Keep financials small. The financials fund rose 0.5 percent on Friday.

Nvidia already reported on 26 Aug (Wed). The next date on this feed is 17 Nov (Tue). That is outside this window. Do not treat it as the coming week.

Key Sources. Friday closes on this feed. Reuters, 16 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/business/us-import-prices-increase-more-than-expected-september-2026-10-16/

5. United States Import Prices Were Hot. Do Not Buy Bonds.

Signal. No new US inflation print arrived over the weekend. Friday's print is still the one that matters. It was hot. The chair did not trade it as a hike you can short, and he did not trade it as a pause you can buy.

Import prices rose 1.1 percent in September. The forecast was 0.8 percent. August was revised to 0.5 percent, from 0.7 percent. On the year, import prices rose 8.1 percent, the largest 12 month rise since July 2022. These prices exclude tariffs. Fuel import prices rose 4.8 percent on the month and 34.5 percent on the year. Prices excluding fuel rose 0.7 percent on the month and 6.0 percent on the year. That nonfuel rise is the official cut. A wire's food and fuel exclusion rose 6.2 percent on the year. That is a different cut. This note does not blend them.

The chair, speaking in Bangkok on Friday, gave no preview of the next meeting. He said he does not prejudge meetings. He said the United States removed a dose of accommodation about a month ago. That is the September hike. The policy rate is 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent. He called the investment surge a near-term demand shock that is putting upward pressure on inflation.

Wires still look for no move this month, and a hike in December. Those are not a probability this note prints. A hike in October is not the base case. A cut is not the base case.

The yield index did not confirm a bond bid and did not confirm a bond break. The 10-year yield index closed at 5.098 percent, up 0.9 basis points from Thursday's 5.089. The 5-year yield index closed unchanged at 4.899 percent. The long-bond fund rose 0.1 percent on Friday. That is the close on this feed. It is not the cash yield.

The Bank of Canada governor said on Saturday that the bank expects to raise its quarterly inflation forecast significantly this month because crude and product prices are still high. The decision is 28 Oct (Wed), the same day as the US decision. As of Saturday, markets were not pricing a Canadian move that day, or in December. They were pricing 100 basis points over the course of next year. That is a market reading in the wire. It is not a Canadian hike, and it is not a US hike.

The dollar index on this session feed closed at 101.84, down 0.16 percent from Thursday's 102.00. The gold fund closed at 382.01, down 0.2 percent. This note does not have a gold futures settlement, so it does not print one.

Macro Impact. A 1.1 percent import-price jump, after this week's hot consumer and producer prints, keeps a cut off the table. It does not make October the base case for a hike. The chair's silence leaves December talk alive. The error is to read a 0.9 basis point yield-index rise, or a 0.1 percent rise in the long-bond fund, as the central bank turning easy. The other error is to add to the duration short into a weekend when the chair refused to preview the meeting.

Positioning. Stay underweight long duration. Do not cover it. Do not add to the short. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. The long-bond fund rose 0.1 percent on Friday. That is not a buy.

Portfolio Construction

PositionWeightRationale
Overweight
Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX)+2%Hold it. December Brent closed at 109.86 dollars. November WTI closed at 101.41. The strait is not open. The Friday rise is why you do not add. The waiver is why you do not sell. The mine claim is not a new close
Power / utilities (XLU)+1%Hold the starter. It is the cleaner expression than a chip dip. The fund rose 1.3 percent on Friday. That is not a reason to add
Cash / short billsHighThe yield index closed at 5.098 percent. The score is 49. Monday prices a mine claim against a 60 day pause. A 49 score is not a bond buy
Underweight
Long duration (TLT, IEF)−5%The close did not break and did not ease enough to cover. October is not the base case for a hike. December talk did not go away. Do not add to the short into a closed weekend
Semis / high-beta tech (SMH)−2%The chip index fell 3.8 percent on Friday, an eighth straight down day. Do not buy the dip. Do not short the Dow
Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL)−2%No new all-clear. November WTI is still the settlement in the book. Do not add
China cyclicals (FXI, EEM)−2%The quarterly print is on the bureau calendar for Monday. It is not out. Do not front-run it
Defense (ITA, LMT)0%No new US order. A mine claim without an independent report is not an order. Do not add defense
Gold (GLD)0%The fund fell 0.2 percent on Friday. Not a futures settlement. Not a new entry
Financials (XLF)0%The sector fund rose 0.5 percent on Friday. Keep it small. Do not add

Cash stays high. An unchanged 49 says leave the crash urgency off and leave the dip bid off. It does not say buy duration, sell energy, or buy chips. Trade 49 as a 5.098 percent yield index, a December Brent close of 109.86 dollars, a November WTI close of 101.41 dollars, a strait that is not open, and a stock tape that fell instead of repairing.
