Producer prices jumped. Do not buy bonds.
The S&P rose yesterday. Chips did not.
Yields fell yesterday. Not a bond buy.
The score is 39. Still neutral. Not a flip.NOT A REGIME FLIP. Score 39 of 100. The label is still NEUTRAL. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. Yesterday's score was 43. The gap to CAUTION widened from 2 points to 6 points.
Producer prices were hot. Bonds rallied anyway. Stocks bounced. Chips did not. Oil settled mixed. The chair has not spoken yet. Import prices are not in this note. Asia cash sessions were open at 04:47 CEST. Do not trade those screens as closes. Do not trade the Friday oil screen as Thursday's settlement.
Do not buy the long bond because the yield index fell. Do not buy the chip dip because a supplier posted a record profit. Do not sell energy because December Brent eased 14 cents.
Thursday is the last completed US session. Oil rows are named-contract settlements, not the Friday screen and not a continuous quote. The chair speaks at 03:30 GMT. That is 05:30 CEST. This note was written before that speech.
| Asset | Level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 (Thu close) | 7,744.06 | Up 0.33% vs Wednesday. Matches the wire |
| Nasdaq Composite (Thu close) | 26,713.03 | Up 0.08% vs Wednesday. Matches the wire |
| Dow (Thu close) | 52,177.69 | Up 1.08% vs Wednesday. Matches the wire |
| VIX (Thu close) | 16.46 | Down 0.41 points vs Wednesday's 16.87. The jump faded. Not a fear print |
| US 10-year yield index | 5.089% | Down 10.1 basis points vs Wednesday's 5.190. Not the cash yield. Not the midday print |
| 5-year yield index | 4.899% | Down 9.3 basis points vs Wednesday's 4.992 on this close |
| December Brent settlement | 105.92 dollars | Down 14 cents, or 0.1%, vs Wednesday's 106.06 settlement. Same contract |
| November WTI settlement | 97.97 dollars | Up 2.88 dollars, or 3.0%, vs Wednesday's 95.09 settlement. Same contract |
| December WTI settlement | 96.50 dollars | Up 2.8%, the Journal said. A different month. Do not blend it with November |
| Brent screen | 105.51 dollars | Friday 00:12 GMT. Down 41 cents from the settlement. Not a new settlement. Not a roll |
| WTI screen | 97.43 dollars | Friday 00:12 GMT. Down 54 cents from the November settlement. Same contract. Not a roll |
| Gold fund (Thu close) | 382.71 | Up 1.8% vs Wednesday. This note does not have a gold futures settlement |
| Dollar index (session feed) | 102.01 | Thursday close on this feed. A Friday Asia note printed 102.07. Do not average them |
The 14 cent dip in December Brent, from 106.06 dollars to 105.92 dollars, is the same contract as Wednesday. It is not a roll. The 2.88 dollar rise in November WTI, from 95.09 dollars to 97.97 dollars, is the same contract as Wednesday. It is not a roll.
The Friday Brent screen of 105.51 dollars is not that settlement. Do not average the screen and the settlement. A continuous quote is not this settlement either.
Producer Prices Jumped. Do Not Buy the Bond.Signal. The print that was missing yesterday is in. It was hot. The bond market did not trade it as a hike.
The producer price index for final demand rose 1.3 percent in September. That is the largest monthly rise since March 2022. The forecast was 0.5 percent. August was revised up to 0.5 percent, from 0.4 percent. On the year, producer prices rose 6.3 percent, the largest 12-month rise since December 2022, after 5.6 percent in August.
Goods prices rose 2.6 percent. Energy rose 10.8 percent and accounted for more than 80 percent of the goods rise. Gasoline rose 20.3 percent. Services rose 0.8 percent. Prices less food, energy, and trade services rose 0.5 percent on the month and 5.0 percent on the year.
Retail sales rose 0.8 percent in September. The forecast was 0.3 percent. Service-station receipts rose 6.4 percent. Sales excluding autos, gasoline, building materials, and food services rose 0.1 percent, after 1.2 percent in August. The headline beat is gasoline. It is not a demand boom.
The policy rate is 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent after the September hike. At the US close, Reuters put the chance of a hike by the December meeting at 67 percent, up from 62 percent on Wednesday, using the CME tool. A same-day note put the chance of a hike at the 27 to 28 Oct (Tue to Wed) meeting at roughly 30 percent. A Friday Asia note put the chance of no move this month at 72 percent. Those are three snapshots. This note does not blend them. A hike in October is not the base case in any of them. A cut is not the base case in any of them.
The yield index did not confirm the hot print. It closed lower. That is the next driver. Buying the long bond because producer prices failed to lift the close is how a safety bid becomes a bad book when the chair speaks, or when import prices print.
Macro Impact. A 1.3 percent producer-price jump, with core retail sales up 0.1 percent, is inflation without a demand boom. It keeps a cut off the table. It does not make October the base case for a hike. The December hike talk did not go away. The error is to read the bond rally as the Fed turning easy.
Positioning. Stay underweight long duration (TLT, IEF). Do not cover it. Do not add to the short into the chair's remarks or into import prices. Hold cash and short bills over the long end. The long-bond fund rose 1.4 percent yesterday. That is not a buy.

Stocks Bounced. Chips Did Not. Do Not Buy the Dip.Signal. Thursday's cash close repaired the Dow. It did not repair the chip tape.
The S&P 500 rose 0.33 percent to 7,744.06. The Nasdaq rose 0.08 percent to 26,713.03. The Dow rose 1.08 percent to 52,177.69. Eight of eleven sectors rose. Healthcare led, up 1.8 percent. Eli Lilly gained over 3 percent. UnitedHealth added 2.8 percent. Walmart rose 1.4 percent. Advancers beat decliners in the S&P by 3.1 to 1. The S&P posted 24 new highs and no new lows. The Nasdaq posted 61 new highs and 393 new lows. That is the split. Volume was heavy, 20.7 billion shares against a 17.6 billion average.
The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 0.9 percent. That was a seventh straight down session. The semiconductor fund fell 1.0 percent yesterday, from 564.74 to 558.84. Nvidia fell 1.8 percent yesterday, from 221.30 to 217.23. Dell fell 6.9 percent yesterday. Hewlett Packard Enterprise fell 7.1 percent yesterday. The Nasdaq fund fell 0.1 percent yesterday. The S&P fund rose 0.3 percent yesterday. Do not read "stocks" as one price.
Taiwan's chip foundry posted a sixth straight record quarterly profit. Net profit was T$763.1 billion, up 69 percent from a year earlier, above a T$746.3 billion estimate. It guided fourth-quarter revenue to a range of 52.3 billion to 54.3 billion dollars, and kept 2026 capital spending at 60 billion to 64 billion dollars. It also said it is being prudent into 2027 because of macro uncertainty. A record profit plus a cautious year-ahead line is not a reason to buy today's dip.
The debt worry did not clear. Reuters said a large cloud renter has about 50 billion dollars of debt, that a bond of that name was yielding around 15 percent, and that the cost of insuring that debt had climbed to around 1,000 basis points. A separate line in the same story put the bonds at 22 billion dollars and the loans at 26 billion dollars. Those are two cuts. This note does not average them. The stock's last print in that story is not a confirmed close, so this note does not print one.
Macro Impact. A 0.33 percent rise in the S&P, with the chip index down 0.9 percent for a seventh day and the Nasdaq still posting 393 new lows, is a rotation into healthcare and consumer stocks. It is not an all-clear for the AI trade. Buying the semiconductor fund because a supplier beat a profit estimate is how Wednesday's loss becomes a second loss. Shorting the Dow because chips fell is the other error. The Dow rose 1.08 percent yesterday.
Positioning. Do not buy the semiconductor fund (SMH). Do not short it. Do not add high-beta tech on a bounce. A starter in utilities is still the cleaner expression than a chip dip. Keep financials small (XLF). The financials fund rose 1.4 percent yesterday. That is not a new bid to add.

Signal. Do not trade the Friday screen as Thursday's oil close. Do not blend two contract months.
December Brent settled at 105.92 dollars, down 14 cents, or 0.1 percent, from Wednesday's 106.06 dollar settlement. November WTI settled at 97.97 dollars, up 2.88 dollars, or 3.0 percent, from Wednesday's 95.09. The Journal put the December WTI settlement at 96.50 dollars, up 2.8 percent. That is a different month. This note does not average 97.97 and 96.50.
The Friday wire, at 00:12 GMT, printed Brent at a screen of 105.51 dollars, down 41 cents from the December settlement, and WTI at a screen of 97.43 dollars, down 54 cents from the November settlement. Those are screens. Thursday's settlements still stand. The gap is not a contract roll. Reuters said WTI settled up more than 3 percent on Thursday, and that Brent was little changed. That matches these two settlements. It does not match a continuous quote.
The story under the mix is the same clash, plus an old-barrel release that the market did not treat as a flood. The energy agency agreed to speed the release of remaining emergency stocks, including over 20 million barrels of diesel. About 330 million barrels of a March pledge above 400 million have already been released. An analyst said the diesel line looks like an acceleration of existing commitments, not new barrels. Spain said it will release 4.4 million barrels in October. That is a schedule. It is not a cargo in a tank.
CNBC, citing official inventory data, said US crude stocks fell by 8 million barrels in the week ended 9 Oct (Fri). Yesterday's 11.1 million barrel figure was industry data. This note does not blend them.
The strait is still not open. Attacks have surged over the past 10 days, Reuters said. Houthis fired missiles at the presidential palace complex in Aden on Thursday. Two guards were killed. A US official has said the administration is considering easing sanctions on some shadow-fleet ships. That is a consideration. It is not a cargo. The president has said he will not attack again before the vote. That is not an all-clear.
Macro Impact. A mixed settlement, with November WTI up 3.0 percent and December Brent down 14 cents, does not open the strait and does not deliver the diesel. Selling the core crude sleeve on a 41 cent Friday screen is the trap. Adding the energy sector fund because November WTI rose is the other trap. That fund fell 1.6 percent yesterday. The oil fund rose 2.4 percent yesterday. Those are not the same trade.
Positioning. Hold the core crude sleeve (USO, XOM, CVX). Do not sell it. Do not add it. Do not add the energy sector fund (XLE) off the WTI rise. Cash still beats a chase into the chair's remarks.

The Yield Index Fell. That Is Not a Bond Buy.Signal. Hot producer prices showed up in the inflation print. They did not stick in the yield index.
The 10-year yield index closed at 5.089 percent, down 10.1 basis points from Wednesday's 5.190. The 5-year yield index closed at 4.899 percent, down 9.3 basis points from 4.992. The long-bond fund rose 1.4 percent yesterday. That is the close on this feed. It is the same feed as the scorecard.
It is not the cash yield. A Thursday midday note said the cash 10-year fell 8.4 basis points to 5.105 percent. That note was updated at 12:36. It is not the close. A Friday Asia note said the cash 10-year is set for its largest weekly fall in more than a year. The week is not closed. This note does not blend those prints with the yield index.
The dollar index on this session feed closed at 102.01. A Friday Asia note put the same index at 102.07 and said it was set for a 0.14 percent drop on the week. Those are two prints. This note does not average them. The gold fund closed at 382.71, up 1.8 percent versus Wednesday. This note does not have a gold futures settlement, so it does not print one. A last trade is not a settlement.
The high-yield fund rose 0.4 percent yesterday. The investment-grade fund rose 0.8 percent. That is not a credit break in the broad funds. The single-name stress in the chip-debt story is not the high-yield fund.
Macro Impact. A yield index that closed 10.1 basis points lower, after a 1.3 percent producer-price jump, is a reason not to press the duration short into the chair's remarks. It is not a reason to cover, and not a reason to buy the long end. Officials have said October is not urgent. The December hike talk did not go away. A 10.1 basis point dip does not retire a 5.089 percent yield index.
Positioning. Leave the duration underweight where it is. Do not add to it. Do not buy TLT because it rose 1.4 percent yesterday. Do not buy gold because the fund rose. Cash still beats a guess at a speech that has not happened.
Key Sources. Reuters, 15 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/business/nasdaq-futures-dive-1-ai-rout-deepens-debt-concerns-2026-10-15/ ; Reuters, 16 Oct, https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/euro-gets-much-needed-reprieve-ai-wobbles-rock-dollar-2026-10-16/
The Score Fell to 39. That Is Not a Flip.Signal. The label did not move. The distance to the next label did.
Fiscal pressure is 61. Central bank pressure is 49. Flow pressure is 25. Narrative stress is 10. The score is 39. Yesterday it was 43. VIX is 16.46, down 0.41 points on the day. There is no fear spike above 20. The Wednesday jump faded. It did not vanish. That fade is why flow pressure went from 37 to 25, and why the score fell 4 points.
The fiscal number eased 4 points. A 10.1 basis point dip in the yield index does not retire a high level. Central bank pressure eased 4 points because the yield index closed lower, not because the Fed turned easy. The December hike snapshot rose. The score and the odds are not the same thing. Do not read 49 as a dovish signal.
Narrative stress rose from 6 to 10 even though the S&P rose 0.33 percent yesterday. The tape split. Chips fell for a seventh day. The gold fund rose. A score of 10 is not a crash call. It is also not an all-clear.
The labor market did not break, which is why this is not a recession bid. Initial claims rose 1,000 to 199,000 in the week ended 10 Oct (Sat). That was a fifth straight week below 200,000. The forecast was 200,000. Continuing claims fell 4,000 to 1.710 million. The unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in September. That rate is not a new print.
Macro Impact. A score of 39 means the CAUTION label stays off, and the gap to that line is wider than it was yesterday. It also means the book is not in a risk-on regime. The line for that label is 30. Using 39 as a reason to buy duration, sell energy, or buy chips is the mistake. Using 39 as a reason to dump the book is the other mistake. The Dow rose 1.08 percent yesterday. The strait is not closed. The October hike is not the base case.
Positioning. Trade 39 as further from the line, not as an all-clear and not as a crash. Hold cash. Hold crude. Stay underweight duration. Do not buy the chip dip. Do not add defense. There is still no new US order in this note.

| Position | Weight | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Overweight | ||
| Crude / energy (USO, XOM, CVX) | +2% | Hold it. December Brent settled at 105.92 dollars. November WTI settled at 97.97. The strait is not open. The Friday screen is why you do not add. The energy sector fund fell 1.6 percent yesterday. That is why you do not add the sector fund either |
| Power / utilities (XLU) | +1% | Hold the starter. It is the cleaner expression than a chip dip. The fund fell 0.2 percent yesterday. That is not a reason to add |
| Cash / short bills | High | The yield index closed at 5.089 percent. The chair speaks later this morning. Import prices are later today. A 39 score is not a bond buy |
| Underweight | ||
| Long duration (TLT, IEF) | −5% | The close dip is not a cover. October is not the base case for a hike. December talk did not go away. Do not add to the short into the speech |
| Semis / high-beta tech (SMH) | −2% | The chip index fell 0.9 percent yesterday, a seventh straight down day. Do not buy the record profit. Do not short the Dow |
| Airlines / transport (DAL, AAL) | −2% | No new all-clear. November WTI rose. Do not add |
| China cyclicals (FXI, EEM) | −2% | No new demand boom in this note. Do not add on an Asia screen |
| Defense (ITA, LMT) | 0% | No new US order. The president has said he will not attack again before the vote. Do not add defense on a palace headline |
| Gold (GLD) | 0% | The fund rose 1.8 percent yesterday. Not a futures settlement. Not a new entry |
| Financials (XLF) | 0% | The sector fund rose 1.4 percent yesterday. Keep it small. Do not add |
Cash stays high. The hold at 39 says leave the crash urgency off. It does not say buy duration, sell energy, or buy chips. Trade 39 as a 5.089 percent yield index, a December Brent settlement of 105.92 dollars, a November WTI settlement of 97.97 dollars, a strait that is not open, and a stock tape that rotated instead of repairing.
| Date | Event | Importance |

Weekdays above match the calendar. Nvidia already reported in August. Taiwan's foundry already reported on Thursday. Do not treat either as next week.
| Variable | Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 61 | 10Y at 5.09% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 49 | 5Y at 4.82% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |
| Flow Pressure | 25 | VIX 16.5 — lowest reading in weeks, low fear despite Iran/oil |
| Narrative Coherence | 10 | SPY -0.9%/5d | QQQ-SPY breadth -45 |
| Composite | 39 | NEUTRAL |
Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 16.46, 10Y at 5.09%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
This is not a flip. The score is 39. The line for CAUTION is 45. The line for RISK-ON is 30. The line for RISK-OFF is 61. A higher score means more stress. The label did not move. Trade 39 as further from the line, with the chair still ahead, December Brent settled at 105.92 dollars, November WTI settled at 97.97 dollars, and the S&P up 0.33 percent yesterday.
Data through the 15 Oct 2026 US close. The Friday oil screen in this note is the 16 Oct 2026 00:12 GMT wire. Asia cash sessions were still open at 04:47 CEST. The chair had not spoken. Import prices had not been released.
