Trump is open to meeting Iran at the UN this week.
Bank of America still calls for 2 more hikes.
China held loan rates. Trump meets Xi on Thursday.US cash, VIX and Treasuries are through the 18 Sep 2026 close. Futures reopened Sunday evening. US cash reopens today.
No scorecard flip. Composite 40, NEUTRAL, unchanged. The oil tape did flip. Friday’s close still had WTI at 100.30 dollars and Brent at 103.87 dollars. Sunday night futures cut that 100 dollar floor as traders priced a possible Trump meeting with Iran’s president at the UN this week. Do not read a 14.81 VIX as an all-clear. The diplomacy channel is open. The war channel is open too.
| Asset | Level | Change |

The Dow closed Friday at 51,683, down 0.18 percent. The Nasdaq closed Friday at 26,523, up 0.39 percent. The 10-year closed at 4.998 percent. Gold futures last traded near 4,406 dollars Sunday night. The dollar index last traded near 100.25.
Sunday night oil was a different tape. The new WTI front month printed 94.06 dollars. The new Brent front month printed 97.50 dollars. That is a contract roll plus a real drop. Direction is not in doubt. Crude sold off as diplomacy headlines hit a closed cash session.
For the week through Friday, the S&P fell 0.08 percent, a second straight weekly loss. The Nasdaq rose 0.72 percent. The Dow fell 1.69 percent. VIX fell 6.5 percent to 14.81.
Trump Is Open to Meeting Iran’s President at the UN This Week.Signal. President Trump told Fox News he would “probably” be open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York (Fox News, Gulf News, Shafaq, 20 Sep). He also said he is in “decision-making mode” on Iran, with the choices framed as more military action, more economic pressure, or a deal (Fox News, 20 Sep). Iran had already sent seven conditions to Washington through Qatar and warned it is prepared for a “decisive war” if they are rejected (Gulf News, Economic Times, 20 Sep). The US has granted visas for a small Iranian delegation, including Pezeshkian, under tight restrictions (Washington Post, 17 Sep). High-level UN week begins tomorrow.
Macro Impact. The live channel moved from a thin weekend talk to a public UN week. That is why oil sold overnight. It is not a ceasefire. Trump has not taken the war option off the table. A meeting can be priced and then cancelled in a single headline. The cost of being long crude into a handshake still sits on one side of the book. The cost of being short crude into a failed talk sits on the other.
Positioning. Hold the core energy sleeve (USO, XOM, CVX). Do not add on the cash open. USO fell 0.96 percent Friday. XOM rose 0.17 percent Friday. CVX fell 0.97 percent Friday. Keep defense as the war hedge (ITA, LMT). ITA was flat Friday. LMT fell 0.88 percent Friday. Gold is the all-weather hedge, not a chase. GLD rose 0.71 percent Friday.

Signal. WTI settled Friday at 100.30 dollars, down 1.6 percent. Brent settled Friday at 103.87 dollars, down 0.9 percent (EnergyNow, market closes 18 Sep). Sunday night the new front month printed 94.06 dollars on WTI and 97.50 dollars on Brent. Admiral Brad Cooper of US Central Command said Hormuz oil and LNG shipments in the past two weeks hit a six-month high, with more than a billion barrels moved in recent months and Iran exporting zero under the blockade (Bloomberg, The Hill, 19 to 20 Sep). Saudi loadings through the strait have recovered after Houthi hits on the East-West pipeline and on Yanbu (Economic Times, 21 Sep). The Houthis still claimed strikes on Riyadh and Yanbu on Saturday (Economic Times, DW, 20 Sep).
Macro Impact. Two things can be true. Traffic is better than the worst week. The strait is still not normal. The overnight dump is the market selling the war premium into UN week, not a return to a 70 dollar world. Diesel at the pump has not rolled over with the futures. If talks fail, the same barrels gap higher. If talks work, the energy overweight has to be allowed to shrink.
Positioning. Hold energy. Do not buy the first cash print. Prefer the names that still clear on a lower crude tape (refiners, services) over a blind USO add. Stay light airlines and trucking (DAL, AAL) while diesel is at a record. DAL rose 0.24 percent Friday. AAL rose 0.15 percent Friday. XLE fell 0.26 percent Friday.

A Second Hike This Year Is Still a Mainstream Call.Signal. The Fed hiked last Wednesday, the first increase since 2023, and flagged more tightening (CNBC, Reuters, 16 Sep). Bank of America expects two more rate hikes in 2026 and warns short-term yields could return to 5 percent (Business Insider, Bloomberg, 19 Sep). The 10-year closed Friday at 4.998 percent, up 5 bp on the day. The 5-year closed at 4.856 percent. The 3-month sits at 3.98 percent. Thirty-year mortgage rates are near 7 percent. The MBA 30-year print in the tape is 6.97 percent (Washington Post, 18 Sep; market data).
Macro Impact. Bonds have repriced. Housing is paying for it. VIX closed at 14.81, down 4.1 percent Friday and 6.5 percent on the week. A 15-handle VIX against a 5 percent 10-year, a live hike path and a binary UN week is cheap insurance, not a safe tape. The next policy meeting is 27 to 28 Oct.
Positioning. Do not buy duration here (TLT, IEF). TLT fell 0.65 percent Friday. IEF fell 0.49 percent Friday. Hold cash and short-dated bills over the long end. Keep financials small (XLF, JPM). XLF was flat Friday. JPM rose 0.10 percent Friday. Prefer staples and quality (XLP, SPHQ) as ballast. XLP fell 0.83 percent Friday. SPHQ rose 0.60 percent Friday.
Key Sources. Business Insider, Bloomberg 19 Sep; CNBC, Reuters 16 Sep; Washington Post 18 Sep; market closes 18 Sep.
Signal. The national diesel average is still approaching 6.50 dollars a gallon after a record climb (KING5, Christian Science Monitor, 18 to 19 Sep). Gasoline is near its highest level of the year with the midterms weeks away (NBC News, 18 Sep). Mortgage rates remain near 7 percent (Washington Post, 18 Sep). Crude futures can fall overnight. The freight bill does not reset on a Sunday print.
Macro Impact. This is the sticky inflation the Fed just hiked into. It runs through trucks, food and farms. Cheaper paper crude does not fix a record pump. Fuel is also a political variable now, which raises the odds of supply measures and of louder talk about the war. Both keep an inflation tail in the price level even if the front month cracks.
Positioning. Stay light consumer discretionary and transport (XLY, DAL, AAL). XLY fell 0.32 percent Friday. Hold staples as ballast, not as a chase. Do not treat the overnight crude dump as a disinflation green light until diesel and gasoline roll over in cash.

China Held Loan Rates. Trump Meets Xi on Thursday.Signal. China kept the one-year loan prime rate at 3.00 percent and the five-year at 3.50 percent on Sunday, the 16th straight month with no cut (Reuters, 20 Sep). All 21 economists in the Reuters poll had expected a hold. President Xi Jinping is due in Washington on 24 Sep for a White House meeting with Trump. AI, trade, rare earths and Taiwan sit on the docket (The Hill, 20 Sep; CSIS). Trump said Friday that AI would be among the topics.
Macro Impact. Beijing is not easing into a hawkish Fed. That keeps the policy gap wide and leaves China cyclicals without a domestic rate put. The Thursday summit is event risk for semis, China names and the dollar, not a growth impulse on its own. A deal headline can lift risk. A snub can hit it. Size for the headline, not for a new China cycle.
Positioning. Stay underweight China cyclicals (FCX, VALE, EEM). EEM rose 0.18 percent Friday. Do not chase high-beta semis after AMD rose 8.5 percent through Friday and 2.7 percent on Friday itself. SMH rose 2.21 percent Friday. Nvidia rose 1.3 percent Friday and 1.8 percent on the week. Hold the data-center sleeve on dips (DLR, EQIX). DLR fell 1.16 percent Friday. EQIX fell 0.45 percent Friday.

|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Impulse | 67 | 10Y at 5.00% — moderately restrictive |
| CB Elasticity | 60 | 5Y at 4.73% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target |

Regime thresholds: <30 RISK-ON | 30-44 NEUTRAL | 45-60 CAUTION | ≥61 RISK-OFF
The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 14.81, 10Y at 5.00%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.
No flip versus yesterday’s 40 NEUTRAL print. Fiscal 67. Policy 60. Flow 15. Narrative 7. Composite 40. Cash data are Friday’s close. Trade 40 as a calm scorecard with a live UN week in front of it, not as an all-clear.
