Top 5 Regime Drivers

1. 🛢️ Oil Broke Below 100 Dollars. Hormuz Is Still Nearly Shut.

Signal. Brent settled at 98.77 dollars yesterday, down 5.8 percent. WTI settled at 95.47 dollars yesterday, down 6.3 percent. Both closed below 100 dollars for the first time in this stretch. The drop followed reports that China, at Saudi Arabia’s request, asked Iran to curb Houthi strikes on Saudi energy, plus more Saudi cargoes via ship-to-ship transfers off Oman and talk of half the East-West pipeline returning in days (Reuters, 18 Sep). Four commodities vessels passed Hormuz on Thursday, versus a 10-day average of about 16 (Reuters, 18 Sep). Iran said it struck a Togo-flagged tanker in the strait (IRNA via Gulf News, 18 Sep). Aramco still halted some October crude to European refiners after the pipeline attack (Bloomberg via Reuters, 18 Sep).

Macro Impact. A 6 percent crude dump is a tape event, not a reopen. Four ships is not a strait. Yanbu and the pipeline are still the constraint. Heating-oil futures fell 5.4 percent yesterday. US retail diesel still averaged 6.45 dollars a gallon on Friday, a new record, up from 6.40 dollars on Thursday (AAA, 18 Sep). The pump has not caught the futures dip. Fade the Oman headline. Do not fade the shortage.

Positioning. Hold USO, XOM, CVX on the dip. USO fell 0.96 percent yesterday. XOM rose 0.17 percent yesterday. CVX fell 0.97 percent yesterday. XLE fell 0.26 percent yesterday. Energy stocks barely followed crude. That is the hold, not the exit. Stay light airlines (DAL, AAL). DAL rose 0.24 percent yesterday. That is the fade.

Key Sources. Market closes 18 Sep (Brent, WTI); Reuters 18 Sep; AAA 18 Sep; IRNA via Gulf News 18 Sep.

2. United States The 10-Year Went Back to 5 Percent. Another Hike Is Still in Play.

Signal. The 10-year yield closed at 4.998 percent yesterday, up 5 basis points, back at 5 percent. The 5-year yield closed at 4.86 percent, up 6 basis points. TLT fell 0.65 percent yesterday to 81.25 dollars. The dollar index was flat at 100.22. Markets priced a 55 percent chance of another hike at the October meeting, up from 43 percent a week earlier (CME FedWatch via Reuters, 18 Sep). Sixteen of 18 dots still wanted another hike this year on Wednesday.

Macro Impact. Thursday’s yield dip did not stick. Composite rose from 34 to 40 because fiscal and policy scores tightened, not because fear came back. VIX closed at 14.81, down 4.1 percent yesterday. A 15-handle VIX with a 5 percent 10-year and 100-dollar oil still in the rear-view is calm, not cheap insurance. Warsh already hiked into this. Diesel at a record keeps December in play.

Positioning. Do not buy TLT at 81.25 dollars. The 10-year at 5 percent is not cheap with another hike in the dots. Keep financials small (XLF, JPM). XLF was flat yesterday. JPM rose 0.10 percent yesterday. Prefer cash and staples over duration.

Key Sources. Market closes 18 Sep; CME FedWatch via Reuters 18 Sep.

3. 🏭 US Factory Output Fell. Energy Costs Are Biting.

Signal. August industrial production was unchanged, versus 0.3 percent expected (Federal Reserve, 18 Sep). Manufacturing output fell 0.3 percent, the first drop after seven straight gains, versus 0.3 percent expected. Motor vehicles and parts fell 1.2 percent. Utilities jumped 1.8 percent. Mining rose 0.1 percent. Capacity use stayed at 76.3 percent. Output was up 1.4 percent from a year earlier (Reuters, 18 Sep).

Macro Impact. This is not a recession print. It is the first crack in the factory rebound. Higher oil and the Wednesday hike are the headwinds. Utilities kept the headline flat. Autos and durables did not. Claims are still low. Housing already slowed. The consumer is employed. Factories just stopped running hot. It does not open the door to a pause if diesel stays at a record.

Positioning. Do not buy the recession dip in IWM. IWM fell 0.47 percent yesterday. Keep cyclicals light. XLY fell 0.32 percent yesterday. XLP fell 0.83 percent yesterday. Staples are still the ballast, not a chase after one down day.

Key Sources. Federal Reserve 18 Sep; Reuters 18 Sep.

4. ⛽ Diesel Made Another Record. Crude’s Dip Has Not Hit the Pump.

Signal. US retail diesel averaged 6.45 dollars a gallon on Friday, a new national record, up from 6.40 dollars on Thursday (AAA, 18 Sep). Regular gasoline averaged 4.47 dollars a gallon. Heating-oil futures fell 5.4 percent yesterday. Refined-product tightness is the inflation the Fed just hiked into. JP Morgan said it has no clear baseline for oil for the first time since the war began (Reuters, 18 Sep).

Macro Impact. Crude can break 100 dollars. The pump did not. Freight, food and farms still eat 6.45-dollar diesel. That is the sticky line in PCE, not the front-month WTI print. A weekend of cheaper crude futures does not cancel a second hike if diesel holds.

Positioning. Stay light airlines and trucking. Hold the energy sleeve. Do not treat Friday’s crude close as a disinflation all-clear into Monday.

Key Sources. AAA 18 Sep; Reuters 18 Sep.

5. 💻 Chip Stocks Led. The Tape Stayed Quiet.

Signal. The S&P 500 rose 0.17 percent yesterday to 7,650.50. The Nasdaq rose 0.40 percent. AMD rose 2.7 percent yesterday to 559.82 dollars. Nvidia rose 1.3 percent yesterday to 222.27 dollars. SMH rose 2.2 percent yesterday. XLK rose 0.82 percent yesterday. QQQ rose 0.63 percent yesterday. VIX closed at 14.81. DLR fell 1.2 percent yesterday. EQIX fell 0.45 percent yesterday. President Trump said he has a “big decision” on whether to “annihilate” the Iranian regime (Axios, 17 Sep). The war is on the UN General Assembly docket next week (Reuters, 18 Sep).

Macro Impact. Semis extended Thursday’s bounce. Breadth was not. The Dow fell. Small caps fell. A 14-handle VIX into a closed weekend with Hormuz still binary is the wrong vol to sell. AI demand still looks firm. The multiple still sits under a 5 percent 10-year.

Positioning. Do not chase AMD after a 2.7 percent day on top of Thursday’s jump. Keep SMH and XLK light. Hold the small data-center sleeve (DLR, EQIX) after yesterday’s dip. Gold is a hedge, not a momentum long. Futures closed at 4,416 dollars yesterday, up 0.37 percent. GLD rose 0.71 percent yesterday.

Key Sources. Market closes 18 Sep; Axios 17 Sep; Reuters 18 Sep.

CB Elasticity605Y at 4.73% — below neutral, Fed constrained by inflation above target

The scorecard registers NEUTRAL — VIX at 14.81, 10Y at 5.00%. Stress is moderate. A VIX spike or a 10Y jump would push toward CAUTION.

No flip versus Friday morning’s 34 NEUTRAL print. Fiscal 67. CB 60. Flow 14. Narrative 7. Composite 40, up 6 points, still Neutral. Trade 40 as a yield-backup print, not as a green light.
